To be fair, there is a big difference between minority leader and president.
If this was Biden, Republicans would be saying "That motherfucker needs to go, vote GOP." Democrats would be saying "That motherfucker needs to go, make way for Kamala." There's just no coming back from that as president.
McConnell stepping away at the end of next year (after the election) would not be a huge problem for the country.
