I thought Takeover was the better song also but…
I understand why Nas won the battle and why people felt Ether more.
Jay dropped Takeover and we didn’t hear anything from Nas for over 2 months. People counted Nas out not expecting much from him and then Ether dropped.
What made Ether hit harder was not only the beat, but Nas approach. He didn’t approach it as a rap battle to beat Jay lyrically.
He approached it like Tupac with “Hit’em Up”. The first words on the song were “Fuck Jay z”. It was wrap after that!
To my knowledge we didn’t hear Nas that direct and aggressive before so that added to the impact. So his tone, lyrics and the beat equaled a loss for Jay.
I still think Takeover’s a better song, but Jay lost the battle due to all of the factors above.
