Dude I dont know how old you are but all being on SNL means is youre a WORKING COMEDIAN. Rock came up in the analog days of the 80s dude...Eddie Murphy put him on...he made his first movie appearance in Beverly Hills Cop 2 then got a job on SNL..like his idol Murphy...because those were the type of gigs ANY COMEDIAN black Asian, Indian, Martian wanted to get back then.
Quick black comic history of the last 50 YEARS. BILL COSBY was the hot young black comic of the late 60s...he was so good that a young Richard Pryor imitated him as he was coming up. Say what you wanna say about Cosby but NO ONE can question his blackness or his positive contributions to black america. After Pryor found his own voice he took off and Eddie Murphy patterned himself after Pryor.
Murphy took his place among stand up comedian legends like Richard Pryor and Bill Cosby before he was thirty.
Today's generation really may not fully understand just how big Eddie was in the 80s. Take Will Smith, Jay Z and Chris Rock's fame and star power at the absolute height of their popularity and put that into one person in 1984 and you see what Eddie Murphy was dealing with back then. The leather suits and rock star swagger he embodied was something that was rarely seen in its full form in a black man in mainstream entertainment.
Chris Rock made the observation that before Eddie there was a sidekick way of acting in the past that other black actors did that Murphy never subscribed to. Make no mistake, 48hrs and Trading Places were Nick Nolte and Dan Akroyd lead films. Eddie just shined brighter. His star quality was so big by that time that when the third film he worked on, Best Defense, tanked at the box office people were saying it was his first bomb when in actuality it was a Dudley Moore film. His first leading role was in his fourth movie, Beverly Hills Cop.
and he did all of that with just 2 stand up specials under his belt. And Murphy had a large white audience appeal...NO ONE QUESTIONS HIS BLACKNESS. That was Chris Rocks mentor and the person he imitated. Do you see the pattern yet?
So when a black person today says "a white audience appeal" its because in the last 25 years..YOU HAVE MORE CHOICES. But that shouldn't matter. An ENTERTAINER SHOULD WANT TO APPEAL TO AS BIG AN AUDIENCE AS POSSIBLE. Thats the point. You get to CHOOSE who your audience is and how you can come out and develop youre entertainment career today because you STAND ON THE SHOULDERS of people who came before you who did what they had to do to thrive. And you look down your nose at them.
It was a joke aimed at will..period. YOU want to make it an issue of Peter the enslaved person life. If thats the case then do you agree that trans people have a legit beef with Chapelle because his jokes were in poor taste and disrespectful to real people's lives??? its a yes or no question.
Lighten up young buck..life gets waaay more complicated than this.
You're statement implies that Chris KNEW Will would fly off the handle about a lame joke that referenced a movie from 25 years ago....you REALLY think thats how that went down?? Chris was sitting his dressing room scribbling notes furiously saying "OH, THIS IS REALLY GONNA PISS WILL OFF!! (maniacal laughter)....again...come on dude.
1st you dismiss Will's assault on Chris
2nd youre connecting waaay too many dots to come up with a theory....NONE of it confirmed
ya'll are working too hard to try to wrap this back around to Chris. Literally blaming the victim.
if thats the case then its possible that women are responsible for their own rapes...think about that.
