Gta is the easy answer since it was a generational shift, started several game tropes that are used in damn near all games to this day and made the most noise inside and outside of the game community. Not to mention that the game is absolutely great and holds up even now.
With that said... damn. What a year, DMC, ICO, MGS2, smash bros, ssx tricky are all favorites of mine, wasn't into fps at the time so halo wasn't on my radar(was also not into Xbox at all, got one and sold it almost immediately lol)
Has to be one of the greatest years in gaming
