Man this revisionist history kills me. Let y'all tell it Biggie and Nas were some of the biggest artist ever when they came out and Dave Chappelle was the greatest black comedian ever in the 90's and early 2000's. What Faizon is saying is correct, he just exaggerated some shit because he don't like Dave. How do I know this because I was there. I worked in the entertainment industry. What Faizon is talking about when he says Dave was not funny to niggas is the black comedy audience. The Comedy shit used to be set up like the rap industry. Shit was sectioned off. The Major cities were New York, LA, Atlanta, Chicago and DC. Most comedians went to one of those cities to try to make it. There were white clubs and black clubs. Most of the black comedians were relegated to performing at black comedy clubs which had black audiences. Earthquake who was (At the time) way funnier than Dave, had one of the biggest black comedy clubs in the US (Uptown Comedy Club on Peachtree). All of the top black comedians lived at Uptown. We (people in the entertainment industry) used to go to Uptown every Friday night. I have seen every funny black comedian of that time 3 or 4 times. Some of them were, Martin Lawrence, Joe Torre, Ricky Harris, George Wallace, Bernie Mack, Cedric, DL, Earthquake, Corey Holcomb, Mike Epps, DC Curry, Steve Harvey, Ricky Smiley, Tony Roberts, Jamie Foxx, Eddie Griffin, Chris Tucker, Bruce Bruce, Daman Wayans, Arnez J....... I think I seen Dave once there and he was ok. All the other comedians listed became famous because of black audiences. Dave and probably Patrice O'Neal were some of the only black comedians on the white circuit, and were made by white audiences. Dave was on star search and performing in Montreal and other shit where there were all white audiences. Dude is speaking from his perspective coming up in black clubs where Dave was not.

press-enter-key-picture-id184320716

And quit with the extremist bullshit.. No one is saying Dave was the GOAT in the 90s.. We are saying Faizon is full of shit and his characterization of Dave is not funny and a product of white hype if fucking lunacy. And you saying Dave only worked white clubs coming up is bullshit. Yes he was popular with that demographic, but using that to say he didnt appeal to blacks is fiction.. He started out on the same circuit in DC as Martin, Tommy Davidson, and a bunch of other name brand cats i dont feel like typing.. Most of these clubs were black and/or heavy black attendance. The main spot that you would call "white" was the Improv, and he was killing that shit while still in high school around 1990.

Again, nobody is saying the guy was Richard Pryor out the gate. But to paint him as a creation of whites with no early connection to black audience is out right garbage.

So all you just said is that Dave had already carved a lane in the section most of the other ones wanted to be?
Where they were sectioned off he was free and some like Faizon didn't like that because they didn't see why they liked him so much and not them?
Faizon is tripping on this one saying he wasn't that great. He was. That's why he kept getting pilots to do sitcoms even after all of them kept falling thru. That's why he got his specials. That's why he got his 1st special before he had the Chapelle Show. That's why he was in those movies with bit parts until he carved out his lane. That's why Chapelle show broke records the 1st season, before the charlie murphy sketch even existed. I and a ton of other people were excited that Dave got his own show. We had been waiting forever to see this man be funny on TV. He talking about he getting money because they like him... yes they like him because it is a popularity contest. Also that contest judges whether you're a legend or not. Comics praise Dave and the people do. Just Not Faizon which is FINE just don't pass it off as fact when it's just opinion

I’ve liked Dave since Killing Me Softly. I’m not a big fan of sketch comedy, so his show wasn’t really for me. It was funny. I’ve watched all of specials since and they’re good to me. I don’t understand why people are expecting everything single special is supposed to be a classic, that’s impossible. To me, 2/4 of the last Netflix specials he did are classic materials. I was at the last Netflix special he taped, the D.C one, the house was backed with 90% black people and he killed it. To me, Dave is special along with Chris Rock. They can talked about stupid hood shit and intelligent shit and make it funny. They can talk about any subject and not too people can do that.

First mike Epps aint never been funny

Second most of those you named had a very narrow fan base and following .

Of those you named that command big bucks their style of comedy is broad.

If your comedy only relates to a sliver of the market you might make a good.living but you won't be at the top...

Chris Rock went through the same thing as Dave.when he had his HBO show many black folks who only liked hood humor didn't think him funny and his show was cancelled pretty quick.

Arne doing the same routine his whole career.....sight gags and Rodney the retard

It kills me that dudes think just because they didn't fuck with Dave that no other black people did.

I remember being in school quoting Dave's Def Comedy Jam shit about the origin of the word nigga with my boys.

Same with his half hour HBO special in the late 90's, Killing Me Softly, etc.

Man I saw Dave Chappell before he got big at the Comedy Cellar in NYC and knew he was something special.

Yeah now people just posting their opinions and not basing it on what the man said. He said white people created and always fucked with Dave which is true. He said niggas never found Dave funny (pre Chapelle Show). I understand what he means. Ok course some black people liked him, but again he is speaking of the black comedy circuit. The Chappelle show first season was not funny, I disagree with but that is his opinion. I guess all these niggas are hating that actually do this for a living and where there at that time.

You keep saying this bullshit as if its true. And then say you are speaking facts while others are speaking opinions.. Ive given you facts. Oh, and Lavelle wasnt saying the same shit Faizon was. Lavelle said they heard of him but didnt know him on the black circuit because he was mainstream.. Faizon was speaking from a place of hatred and talking in idiotic absolutes. Faizon said the guy wasnt funny and blacks didnt know him. Im telling you for a FACT thats bullshit. The funniest part of that is that they both worked Def Jam and Dave had a far better reception.

Daves biggest flaw in the eyes of the chitlin circuit black comedian hater coalition is he didnt have to play shit clubs and slum for 15-20 years... Dave started stand up in his teens and was doing film shortly thereafter. Meanwhile, the Faizons and Epps started in the their 20s and with the exception of bit parts here and there were relegated to that same circuit as their bread and butter for most of their careers. Daves talents and scope allowed him to bypass alot of the shit... They are literally mad at the guy for being better than them. Its akin to saying a kid who got skipped in school and graduated early isnt as smart as the ones who went straight thru because they had more time in the classroom. When the reality is the opposite.. the kid got skipped because he was smarter than you.

That's like saying because all these artist with success are better than B. Sigel

He never went platinum but will outrap mfers that went to 4X Platinum

Capone, Rob Stapleton, n Talent have never went mainstream but they better than MOST comedians and I love that they not out here hating but I go to at least 3 shows per yr and they always kill it.

Earthquake n surprisely Tony Rock be out here killin shit

It's a few other local acts that big on the comedy scene thats super hilarious mainly Smokey

Now you are arguing semantics and I refuse to argue about that. If I say niggas can dance, that don't mean every black person. Your second paragraph, if you really believe that is your prerogative, but it's wrong. Dave's talent did not allow him to bypass a bunch of shit early on, he was simply plugged with the right people (white folks). I have first hand knowledge of that from a friend that I grew up with who had never done comedy a day in his life. Was not even a funny dude like that. Moved to LA to pursue comedy, got a white high powered agent because the dude went to college with him, the agent linked him with Lorne Michaels, and he was on Saturday Night live within a year, and he had not put in any work. He is not a great comedian, but has made a career out of it simply because he is plugged with the right agency and has worked on his craft. Dave was no more talented back then than the Jamie Foxx's, Earthquake's, Martin Lawrence's........... He just got plugged with them white folks at an early age. But you can continue to believe what you want.

Im not even sure how to respond to this because it isnt really clear who you are talking about here. Dave or your friend? But if most of that is directed toward Dave then again, you're wrong. I will wait for you to clarify tho. But in regards to saying Dave wasnt as talented as Quake, Martin, etc.. Thats your opinion, and its not what im debating. Im disputing your point that he wasnt funny, isnt a great comedian, and Faizons bullshit about whites "made him". You aint getting "plugged in wit them white folks" out of the goodness of their hearts. You need talent my man.

bruh...the Chris Rock Show had 5 seasons and won an Emmy. it was not cancelled quick in any sense of the word.

I didn't remember 5 seasons

But the point still stands that it wasn't well received by a large part of the black community

Hi audience was mainly white

The same thing can be said about DL.....before he started being socially conscience many said he wasn't funny..

Its not the comedy that Bruce Bruce and Hamburger and Earthquake and the likes did.

The point is if you look at the comedians that became huge, their comedy wasn't myopic Katt Williams is an exception.

that sir, is utter bullshit.

Unlike black comedy shows of today, which seem more concerned with making white people laugh, The Chris Rock Show carried an anti-establishment edge bent on waking up his predominantly black audience to the frauds being sold to them by the power elite. If McDonalds was going to use Al Jarreau to sell Big Macs, Chris Rock was going to sell you a fake cereal called Nigga Please.
