Insectoids are omnivores, like almost all high thinking species are. Insectoids do travel through space. But due to their need for higher levels of oxygen and air pressures they are limited in what they can do outside of their ships. Many of the space faring species team up and contract out the experiments and research they want done depending on a species special skill sets. Insectoids evolved like all other species are want to do.
Your planet alone has had at least 7 Extinction Level Events (ELEs) that changed the course of evolution on it. At any given time on this planet there could have been Insectoids, Dinoids or Amphibians as the head intelligent species if it were given the time to evolve into it. You Hue-Mans lucked up when the Dinosaurs went extinct ... I could right now have been talking to you as a Dinoid variant instead of you as a Hue-Man.

Yes, Type 0 to 1 is the most dangerous transition. My people nearly destroyed themselves while in that transition. Your people will transition through to the other side.
