Astronomers have picked up a strong radio signal from space — but it doesn't mean aliens

Don't get too excited just yet

Buzz is growing over the possibility of intelligent alien life, thanks to a group of Russian astronomers who say they’ve picked up a strong mysterious radio signal from space. The potential source of the signal is exciting: it seems to be coming from a distant system with a Sun-like star. Perhaps this star has a civilization-filled planet just like ours, right? Well before you assume we’ve found ET’s home, consider this: astronomers still need to find another signal coming from the same spot in the sky — and that may not be likely.

DON'T ASSUME WE'VE FOUND ET'S HOME

The astronomers picked up the original signal using the RATAN-600 radio telescope, a large radio observatory in Zelenchukskaya, in southwestern Russia. Their data indicates that the signal came from the direction of a star called HD164595, located 95 light-years from Earth. That’s intriguing since the star is about the size of the Sun, and it’s known to have a planet in its orbit. Granted, that planet orbits much closer to its star than Mercury orbits the Sun, so it’s probably way too toasty to support life. But it’s possible that there are other planets in this system we just don’t know about yet.

Still, Seth Shostak, the director for the Center for SETI Research, cautions people to curb their enthusiasm. There are many different possible explanations for what caused the detection, and until a repeat signal is picked up from the same spot in the sky, no one can cry "alien." Signals like this have also been picked up a few times before, and none has yet to pan out. "I would say it’s a mystery signal, but mystery signals are not new," Shostak told The Verge.

The signal picked up by the Russians isn’t all that new, either. Astronomers actually found it a year ago, but it’s making headlines now for a few reasons. A member of the research team emailed out a presentation about evidence of the signal to a few people, and then Paul Gilster, a science and tech writer, wrote about the signal on his website Centauri Dreams. "The possibility of noise of one form or another cannot be ruled out," wrote Gilster. "But the signal is provocative enough that the RATAN-600 researchers are calling for permanent monitoring of this target."

The fact that the Russian astronomers waited so long to tell the SETI — search for extraterrestrial intelligence — community about the signal is a little odd, said Shostak. "It’s generally accepted if you find a signal you think might conceivably be due to extraterrestrial activity, you’d want to confirm it with someone looking at it with another antenna," he said. Now, it’s going to be hard to confirm what the RATAN-600 picked up last year was authentic. And finding a repeat signal this long after the original detection seems unlikely. Perhaps the signal was repeating back when it was first found, but isn’t any longer.

IT’S NOT CLEAR WHAT THE SIGNAL ACTUALLY WAS

Also it’s not clear what the signal actually was. The receiver the Russians used was set at a wide bandwidth, making it difficult to decipher the signal’s source, according to Shostak. It’s possible it was a message from another civilization or just the effect of a natural space object, like a pulsating quasar. Not knowing the source of the signal makes it hard to tune into the same signal again.

Despite this, Shostak and his team are still taking a good look at HD164595. Over the weekend, they fired up the Allen Telescope Array — a large collection of radio telescopes northeast of San Francisco — and pointed it in the direction of the star. So far, it’s been radio silence, and Shostak isn’t holding his breath for anything more. The Allen Telescope Array isn’t as big as the RATAN-600 Radio Telescope, so it may not be powerful enough to pick up what the Russian astronomers found. Also, Shostak said it’s not really clear the point in the sky where the original signal came from. Due to the design of the RATAN-600, the astronomers only know the general area of the signal’s origin. "It’s not even clear that this signal is coming from that star system," said Shostak.

Plus, any potential civilization in the HD164595 system would need a lot of power to broadcast a signal like this. If the signal was broadcast in all directions, then it’d have to be powered by 10 billion billion watts, according to Shostak. "Maybe the aliens have access to that kind of energy, but we sure don’t," he said. Less power would be needed if for some reason the signal was focused directly at Earth. But the power would be comparable to all the energy that humanity uses — including all our transportation, all our electronics, and all our power plants.

"IF YOU DON’T FIND [THESE SIGNALS] A SECOND TIME, THEY’RE NOT THAT INTERESTING."

But above all, SETI researchers have been burned by mysteriously strong space signals before. The most famous example was the so-called "Wow signal" — a strong radio signal picked up by astronomers at Ohio State University in 1977. One of the astronomers was so enthusiastic about the signal’s strength that he wrote the word "Wow!" on a computer printout of the data. As exciting as that signal was, though, it has yet to be detected again.

So until another signal is found coming from the HD164595 system, the discovery in no way indicates aliens. "If you don’t find [these signals] a second time, they’re not that interesting," said Shostak. "It could be terrestrial interference, a bug in the system, or it could be a natural source... I’m not terribly excited about it, because these kinds of things have happened a lot in the past."

Alien Hunters Spot Freaky Radio Signal Coming From Nearby Star

Astronomers using the RATAN-600 radio telescope in the Russian Republic of Karachay-Cherkessia have detected an unusual signal emanating from a star located about 94 light-years from Earth. It’s not clear if the signal is being transmitted by aliens, but the researchers say we should keep a close watch on this intriguing new extraterrestrial candidate.

As reported by Paul Gilster at Centauri Dreams, the anomalous signal was detected by an international team of astronomers back on May 15, 2015. The researchers, led by N. N. Brusilov, describe a “strong signal in the direction of HD164595,” a planetary system located in the constellation Hercules. The finding is set to be discussed at a meeting of the IAA SETI Permanent Committee on September 27, 2016.

It’s still too early to tell if the signal is coming from an extraterrestrial civilization, but the researchers say it’s serious enough that scientists should now permanently monitor this new target. HD164595 is practically the same size and age as our own sun, it shares a similar chemistry, and it’s less than 100 light-years away. What’s more, it hosts at least one known planet, a warm Neptune in a circular orbit. It’s very possible that other planets reside within this system.

Looking at the signal, the researchers say that if it came from a multi-directional, isotropic radio beacon, it would have to be produced by a Kardashev Type II civilization, i.e. an alien civilization that has tapped into nearly 100 percent of its host star’s energy potential. If the signal was targeted directly at our solar system, then it would be of a power available to a Kardashev Type I civilization, i.e. an alien civilization capable of exploiting nearly all of its home planet’s energy potential.

Another possibility, of course, is that the signal is a natural anomaly, such as background noise. French astronomer Jean Schneider is considering the possibility that HD164595 is amplifying a background radio source through a process known as gravitational microlensing.

To move forward, scientists will need to confirm the quality and integrity of this signal and rule out other possibilities. And by focusing their radio dishes onto this planetary system, scientists may detect new signals, and possibly even patterns. Like the intriguing Tabby’s Star, and the rampant speculation that it’s home to an alien megastructure, more data is needed before we jump to conclusions.

Update: Turns out not everyone is impressed with this anomalous signal. Here’s what Daren Lynch from SETI@home has to say about it:

I was one of the many people who received the the email with the subject “Candidate SETI SIGNAL DETECTED by Russians from star HD 164595 by virtue of RATAN-600 radio telescope.” Since the email did come from known SETI researchers, I looked over the presentation. I was unimpressed. In one out of 39 scans that passed over star showed a signal at about 4.5 times the mean noise power with a profile somewhat like the beam profile. Of course SETI@home has seen millions of potential signals with similar characteristics, but it takes more than that to make a good candidate. Multiple detections are a minimum criterion.

Because the receivers used were making broad band measurements, there’s really nothing about this “signal” that would distinguish it from a natural radio transient (stellar flare, active galactic nucleus, microlensing of a background source, etc.) There’s also nothing that could distinguish it from a satellite passing through the telescope field of view. All in all, it’s relatively uninteresting from a SETI standpoint.

A"strong signal" detected by a radio telescope in Russia that isscanning the heavens for signs of extraterrestrial life has stirred interest among the scientific community.

"No one is claiming that this is the work of an extraterrestrial civilisation, but it is certainly worth further study," said Paul Gilster, author of the Centauri Dreams website which covers peer-reviewed research on deep space exploration.

The signal is from the direction of HD164595, a star about 95 light-years from Earth that is known to have at least one planet, and may have more.

The observation is being made public now, but was actually detected last year by the Ratan-600 radio telescope in Zelenchukskaya, Russia, he said.

Experts say it is far too early to know what the signal means or where, precisely, it came from.

"But the signal is provocative enough that the Ratan-600 researchers are calling for permanent monitoring of this target," wrote Mr Gilster.

The discovery is expected to feature in discussions at the 67th International Astronautical Congress in Guadalajara, Mexico, on September 27.

"Working out the strength of the signal, the researchers say that if it came from an isotropic beacon, it would be of a power possible only for a Kardashev Type II civilisation," Mr Gilster wrote, referring to a scale-system that indicates a civilisation far more advanced than our own.

"If it were a narrow beam signal focused on our Solar System, it would be of a power available to a Kardashev Type I civilisation," indicating one closer to Earth's capabilities.

Mr Gilster, who broke the story on August 27, said he had seen a presentation on the matter from Italian astronomer Claudio Maccone.

"Permanent monitoring of this target is needed," said the presentation.

Nick Suntzeff, a Texas A&M University astronomer, told the online magazine Ars Technica that the 11 gigahertz signal was observed in part of the radio spectrum used by the military.

"If this were a real astronomical source, it would be rather strange," Mr Suntzeff was quoted as saying.

"God knows who or what broadcasts at 11Ghz, and it would not be out of the question that some sort of bursting communication is done between ground stations and satellites," Mr Suntzeff said.

"I would follow it if I were the astronomers, but I would also not hype the fact that it may be at SETI signal given the significant chance it could be something military."

Nothing to see here.

To be honest SETI is a waste of time (If that is what they are really doing). The alien civilizations that would be using radio signals are too far apart to really have any meaningful communications with, not to mention that the further your signal spreads the weaker it gets until it is really just too weakened to be picked up. The aliens using similar radio tech would mostly be on par with your tech so they wouldn't add much to your knowledge aside from the knowing you aren't alone bit. The groups you'd really want to talk to use other ways to communicate that are vastly superior, but they may not want to talk to you ... not yet at least.

They have shunned me yet again. They went with a radial symmetric alien. Those rarely if ever get off world without help from a bilateral symmetric species.

Y'all asking the wrong questions:

1) How are you able to be a clone? I mean, I get the physical part but how do you impart a soul into a body, especially since we (humans) haven't even recognized the existence of a soul (other than religiously)?

2) How many elements are there, amongst your Type 2 civiliation? How many elements are used there but not here?

3) What is the relation of the Annuaki to the Older Ones? Are they one & the same, different entities or something else?

4) Please explain gravity, in your terms, not ours. In other words, give me a better perspective than the current scientific model.

5) What's the whole abduction thing about? And the cattle mutilation? Are there some chosen people out there? And what do I have to do to get on the abduction list?

I'ma let you work on those 5 for now. I got plenty more tho.....

I will do my best, but some of the answers are restricted for various reasons.

1 I am both a physical copy of an earlier me and I am also the memories and experiences of that/those earlier versions. I have also made copies of myself in this fashion so that I can sort of be in more than one place at the same time. BUT, I am also a separate entity unto myself (as well as my other clones). Downloading the electrical impulses of a brain is easier said than done. Memories are the tricky part because they are dormant in the brain until triggered, but it too can be done.
a. True, your religions have touched on what a soul is. So will your sciences one day. Your religions are after all, an attempt by more advanced beings (than you were back then) trying to explain very complex things in a simplistic way. I hope that helps.

2 182 elements at the moment, there may be more. All past 120 are unstable to us so they are purely academic.

3 The Old Ones are not the Anunnaki, they are children in comparison. The Anunnaki do know of the Old Ones, all Type 1 civilizations and up eventually get a visit from the Old Ones.

4 I have to keep this simple because there is info in it I am not allowed to divulge ... also, it is difficult to explain because we are confined to 3 dimensional constructs. Imagine two bed sheets that are soaking wet (I'm using two bed sheets here because it is easier to conceptualize) the two sheets are spread out evenly on top of the other. Now imagine that you can somehow pull the sheets apart equally at the same time throughout the sheets. The surface tension the water creates between the sheets is gravity. The sheets are the Universes. Gravity doesn't originate from the dimensions that life exists on, it instead originates in the space between the dimensions and leaks over. That is why it is so weak on this side compared to the other forces.

5 Abduction is a tool for the study of your development ... your bodies AND souls. Each sentient life is similar, but also unique enough that we like to understand you better.
a. Cattle mutilations, I will just say that the parts taken are used to make beings.
b. Chosen people, yes there are chosen people. There are special genetic combinations that often come up naturally (and also by design) that are extremely interesting to us and other alien species observing you Hue-Mans.
c. I probably shouldn't tell you this, but ALL of you have been visited at least once in your life by one or another alien groups.
