Doubt it, remember xvid codec videos from back in the day, those would look like trash on a 4k tv. Even 420 and 720p videos from the 2000's don't hold up well. I'm assuming we will eventually transition to 8k tvs.

That's good point.

Replacing 720p and 1080p files with higher quality files has crossed my mind many times because there is a popular site that uploads compressed files and while they look ok on 1080p TVs the color banding and compression are very obvious and I'm going to assume it's going to look worse on higher resolution TVs

I've been seen h265 2160p movies around 3 gigs in size, hopefully more groups start to do that

When it comes to lower resolution media on higher resolution TV's, how do you handle old shit?

For Example, DVD rips of old sitcoms?

I have remastered rips of The Honeymooners and Star Trek The Original Series but I also have DVD, 480p rips of shit like Fresh Prince, Family Matters and Three's Company.

You plan on switching to 2160p? I wonder how those 1080p videos will look 10 years from now,
I downloaded some 4k movies at 4gb and decided wasn’t worth the extra space , in the future I’m sure they will get smaller and keeping the same quality

my tv will play them in their native resolution but they will have huge borders around them, I don't bother with them any more I just get a new version of them.

VHS collecting I don’t understand , why would I want to watch a movie in shitty quality

And you can’t say is the same as retro gaming/collecting , or is it ?

There's a significant amount of content from the early to mid-80s that was never transferred to DVD let alone Bluray. Short of someone capping it and posting it somewhere it's considered lost media. There's also value in the covers that most people haven't seen in 40+ years. It's a small hobby but a legit hobby.

I know I have Married with Children and it looks like shyt sometimes, but I think of what it would cost to own the Blu-Ray. The headache to have a dedicated HDMI port for that player. Or the streaming service that I constantly have to pay for and never have full access to and remind myself this isn't so bad.

I have a home theater with a 120" projection screen so I'll admit I'm a bit of a snob, but I only download UHD 4K rips now.
I'm talking around 50GB (sometimes more) each. It's not just about the picture quality but also the AUDIO.
I have a Dolby Atmos setup in my theater with ceiling speakers so good sound is a must for me.
I've been replaced all my old DVD movie rips.
For the old TV shows, I will just stream or try to find a 720p version to download.

what kind of computer specs is everyone using to host the Plex server? I heard of people running it on raspberry pi's and old computers

I had it running on an old PC with an AMD Ryzen 3ghz with 32gb of RAM. Four different drives 3tb, 2tb, 1tb 500gb. First on it was running on Ubuntu and then Windows 7. I got tired of keeping up with OS updates and licenses, now I have everything on 2 NAS's.

How often do you yall buy new TVs ?
I have a perfectly working 65” 4K Sony tv I bought in 2018 that’s working 100%, the OS is slow as shit but I have always used the latest Apple TV , the picture quality looks just as good as the day I bought it
Back in the day , your family bought a tv and they kept that tv 10, 20 years
Moral of the story , I have a 75” mini LED in my Amazon cart and I don’t know why

Folks keep thinking thinking bigger is better. But keep in mind technology didn't jump like it does now. The span of 1080p to 4k was 5-10 years. A black and white set was 1926, color came out in the 1950's. That's almost a 30 span. So it made sense to keep Tv's longer.

That same thing happens on all these TV's OS's! Samsung, Roku TV, Sony, etc... Half the time they abandon their app store, so you never get updates. In Roku's case if you don't pay to play they will just kick you out of their store.

It sounds like you have a Apple TV hooked up and run it off of that HDMI. I do something similar with Google Chromecast/TV devices. The Roku devices are good, but finding replacement bluetooth remotes are a pain.

It really just depends on how good a deal a new TV, how my current TV is operating, and if I really want to go bigger.
I used to be super picky about picture quality and such on my TVs but now not so much since I now have a projector and home theater room.
I' d say if that Sony TV is working fine, keep it.
Like you said, the Apple TV or any other good streaming device will make up for a slow OS on the TV, which I never use anyway on my TVs (I use Nvidia Shield Pro).
Last year I replaced my 70" living room Sony TV with a Sony 85" since it had been about 8 years and I wanted to go bigger.

Samsung's OS is so trash on my tv, I only use it to watch live TV. Its so slow, it takes like 15-20 secs to even load. I just use my firestick to run plex and any internet apps like Tubi or Pluto. I want to jailbreak my stick but from what I gather I have to crack it open and short some circuits and I don't feel like all that. I want to get an Nvidia Shield because I'm going to cancel my Prime sub, but they haven't updated those things in like 5 years and I know as soon as I spend $200 on one they'll drop a new model. I may just grab a used one from Ebay. Pretty much everyone I know uses Roku because either their tv has it built in but I'm not a fan of Roku.

I only jailbreak devices when I have the later model and no more updates are being produced on the previous device. Companies push out updates to block and or brick jail breaks and some of those updates I want on the device! Example, I won't jail break my Switch cause updates like bluetooth support was an update I wanted. But I did jail break my Wii U and use it to play a library of other games.

"Jailbreaking" a Firestick does not involve cracking it open. It's actually pretty simple and can be done easily in a few steps.
You're either loading Kodi (and all its add-ons) or loading an IPTV paid service, or maybe even both.
And Nvidia Shield is not putting out a new model anytime soon because even their 5-year old devices are still among the best streaming devices out there. It was way overpowered when it came out and was mostly used for gaming at the time.

Man, when my son was younger I jailbroke the Wii and was able to get a shitload of games on there for free. Good times.

Google clamps down on VPN workarounds for cheaper YouTube Premium subscriptions

So far mine hasn’t been cancelled
I got the dreaded email from YouTube saying I can't verify my payment in Vietnam

my Vietnam VPN YouTube premium trick ended, I used Kazakhstan with the VPN and is working perfectly, I'm paying $9 a month for the YouTube premium family plan

I don't only use YouTube Premium to get no ads, but I also use the included with premium, YouTube music almost every day with Apple Carplay

Damn, just finding out I could have been using a VPN all this time to get YouTube premium cheaper.
I'm paying $25/month for the family plan and even at that price it's worth it since YouTube is pretty all me and my kids watch.
At $9/month, it's damn near a steal.

Good luck man...just make sure the new one is noticeably better...the fact that its bigger is a step in the right direction

I always hook up an external streamer so OS specs don't mean nothing to me

Got a 900f in the living room and I love it....and a 900e in the guest room...I suspect yours is one of those or 930e...great TVs but you should see an improvement in dolby vision at the very least because those years, Sony TVs either had no DV or really dim DV

It’s a 65” Sony 900e , I never had a problem with it , but I feel like I’m using an iPhone 4 with the way these tvs get updated every year
I’m gonna stay with it until oled prices come down
The one I was looking at is this one
On Amazon and best buy it cost $900 right now

You can still do it , but wait until your subscription ends , don’t auto renew
Get a free vpn , select Kazakhstan as the country , better to do this in a private browser/tab
If you do everything correct you will get Kazakhstan prices when you go to YouTube premium website , enter your American payment, enter a Kazakhstan address , I used the capital and the main airport location
That’s it , it all took 5 minutes
But I had already a vpn installed , for torrents

To clarify I was paying $6 a month for the family plan with Vietnam , Before YouTube clamped down on this trick , but $9 is better than the regular $25

Thats a good price...and it is better than the 900e (just because its old), much brighter and has good dolby vision (which some may consider overrated)...factor in the warranty costs with it though as I wouldnt trust a TCL without a warranty (even had warranties on my Sonys)..I wonder how much the QM8 is...thats the TCL one level up and that one is a killer...the QM7 hard to beat for value though

That 900e is a great TV....that OS has been slow since it came out so it must be horrible now

Hate to put pressure on you to buy something you really dont need but if you want to buy a TV now might be the time because I don't know whats going to happen next year if Trump goes through with the tariffs
