For my guitar players, what would be the best method to learn scales and arpeggios. Any advice would be appreciated.

SxHtWa.jpg
I don't know about a "best" method, but I started playing arpeggios by using chord shapes. I just broke up the chords I was playing into individual notes, then learned to sweep up and down the shape. So now when I play a song, sometimes I'll substitute a chord with the single notes of that chord. Started with about 3 notes from the bottom e string and eventually learned to go from top to bottom or bottom to top of all 6 strings of a particular chord. Scales were always more of a problem for me because I had a hand injury which caused one of my fingers to have a slower response than the others. So instead of spending a lot of time with scales I just start learning all my favorite solos and finding my own way to finger them so to speak. Report back if you find something that helps you

Good looking on the info. I appreciate it. Been playing for 7 motnhs now. Bare chords are difficult for now as well. I'm sticking with it and trying. I'll get it eventually. Starting with that goddam F chord.

Remember when I said I was working on the F chord and it will take me a month. Well, it took two months of playing everyday. As far as my practicing goes I slacked off in October (I started a new job) but I am going back to practicing everyday. I have been working on the 5th position chords now. The first five months of this epidemic I went really far as far as playing the guitar. I really slacked in October though. It didn’t help that my back was hurting really bad and contributed to me not playing that much last month too. I am back though.

Stick with it buddy. Hope your back gets better. I'm really enjoying playing power chords. Haven't tried that F in a while but I need to get back to it. Still working on chord switches too. Playing Sly and the Family Stones "Everyday People" and it's really just the G and the C Chord. I'm spot on with making the G, my favorite chord. But the C can give me a little trouble. I'll get it though. I know all my Power Chords from F to E all the way up the neck.

There are more tools available on youtube than I ever had as a kid. Always remember to play what you want to play. You can learn every chord and scale in the books but if you don't feel it, it will never sound good to you. You can find damn near any song you want to learn. Don't be ashamed if you are learning it from a 12 year old Asian girl who seems like she's years ahead of you or some kid in his mom's basement. Fuck 'em. They can't even drive yet. But you can cop those lessons for free! The important thing is to enjoy it.

There are about a million songs using 3 or 4 chord power chord progressions.
Learn D, A, Bm and G and you've mastered about half the pop songs in any song book.

:hmm: Seriously. most of those shits are three or four cords.
Keep on jammin', bro. It was good to read about your experiences.

It's addictive! Wait until you start playing with other people. You're really going to be hooked! Warning: THIS IS NOT A CHEAP HOBBY!!!!
You've been warned! If you're married, you will be sneaking guitar number 6 into the house, and when your wife mentions it, you will lie to her and say you've already had that. The key is to get so many where that lie could be believable! And learn the musician's creed: it is better to ask for forgiveness, than to ask for permission.

Just came across this thread.. I see I am not the only one that decided to try and pickup guitar during the epidemic. I was torn been starting with an electric or acoustic, but eventually decided to go with electric. Bought a little starter Squier and a small Fender amp that came with a butt load of pedal simulations. I had learned two chords and you couldn't tell me NOTHING! Turned my amp up load, then opened my windows so my neighbors could hear me jamming!... playing the same two chords over and over.
:lol::lol::lol::lol:

I'm getting frustrated though.. My issue is being able to press the string hard enough with my index finger.. The shape of my finger and nail, makes me have turn my hand more lateral rather than straight down with curves fingers..Cut my nails as close and possible, but not enough meat on the finger tip. :dunno:

While learning the C scale on electric I took a slight detour and learned the intro to Marvin Gaye's "Distant Lover." Picked it up pretty fast but you know thats a bass sound. So just like that I decided I want to play bass as well. I want to be proficient at electric, acoustic and bass. I don't want to box myself into just one thing. I want to be able to do it all with all three and make absolutely any sound I want. Just have to figure out which bass guitar to get. @woodchuck help me out here fam.

I did this. My ex knew better, though.
Once the tone chasing starts and the pedals start coming in, its a whole 'nother level of expense.
I can't count the number of times I heard "that little box costs how much?!"

Keep it up Steelers fan and fellow Central Jerseyan. I got into the guitar about 40 years ago after watching Prince on American Bandstand. On a scale of 1 to 10 at my best I was a 3. Hate I stopped learning. I can still pick it up and play something you might recognize.

Favorites are Jimi, Clapton, Slash, Angus, Nile Rogers, Prince. In jazz check out Charlie Christian. He may be the best ever. The ending scene in that movie with Ralph Machio is great. Can't think of the name.

BTW... who is this chick?

Man pick up a guitar and start again fam. Its so much fun. I absolutely love it. I'm mad I didn't start earlier but I won't dwell on the past. Just looking forward to being the best I can be on electric, acoustic and bass. Wanna play everything from Marvin Gaye to Joni Mitchell to B.B. King to Jimi Hendrix. I want to do it all. I don't want to put myself in a box when it comes to guitar. I wanna play my favorites and be able to create my own sounds. By the way, that chick is a friend of mine from upstate New York. Can't remember her name though.
