One more interesting fact about James Jamerson. When Marvin Gaye was ready to record the song "What's Going On" he said he wanted James to play bass. But they couldn't find him. They called his house and he wasn't there. Everyone knew James was a bad drunk so Marvin and his manager went to 4 different bars in Detroit looking for him. At the 4th bar they found him. He was tore up from the floor up. Marv explained to him about the song and said it was gonna be an instant hit. Would bring him back for sure (at this time Marvin took off about 3 years from music after Tammy Trammell had died. He was really depressed about it) James told him I'll do it, but I'm drunk. Marv said "thats okay man, you know we need a little sauce to work right anyways." James said......."Naaaah, I'm drunk drunk." Marv asked, but can you play? He said , oh I can play, but I'm just letting you know I'm drunk. They left and went to the studio. James was so drunk he couldn't stand to play. He sat down on a stool but fell over. He said, lay me on the floor, on my back. I'll do it this way. AND THATS HOW JAMES JAMERSON PLAYED THE BASS FOR IT. SO NEXT TIME YOUR LISTENING TO MARVIN GAYE'S WHATS GOING ON JUST NOTE JAMES JAMERSON PLAYED THE BASS DRUNK THAN A MUTHAFUCKA LAYING ON HIS BACK!!!! :eek2::eek2::eek2::eek2::eek2::eek2::eek2::eek2::eek2::eek2::eek2:

I learned to play classical acoustic bass in college and played there with a string chamber group. A bass player friend loaned me his MusicMan for a few months and in that time I taught myself electric. I remember learning Ron Carter’s riffs on Tribe’s, ’The Low End Theory” album. Never seriously touched or owned another bass until last Fall when I bought one. Recently, I got tired of emulating bass guitar with a keyboard on my tracks and wanted to give them the real thing. Was distancing myself from my bass player friends while on Covid lockdown. That’s why I copped one. Ran across that video you just posted back then too. I’d been muting the strings with my right hand to try to get that tight Jameson tone.

I’m gonna get a second bass soon so I can have one with flat wound strings on hand and another with round wound.

Yea, it’s inspiring to learn about the techniques of the masters.

Yup. That’s a very famous story. It does blow your mind, really. A bonafide musical genius. I always thought he did the bass line for Inner City Blues, but that session was Bob Babbitt of The Funk Brothers. on another note, the first time I heard Thundercat’s solo on Kendrick Lamar’s, ‘I’, it immediately reminded me of Jamerson.

Borrowed the strat I gave my GF last night..I gave it to her, since she said she wanted to learn...she doesn't, but it's all good. I let her use my SG, while I play the strat for a few days...weeks.

I haven't played it in months...like it wayyy better than I remember.

Yup. My wife got a guitar too talkin bout you know I played right? I'm like, I ain't never seen yo ass play this damn guitar.:lol::lol::lol::lol:

After playing that strat today....I ain't sure I'm in any rush to get my SG back.

Question (anyone)...I have an ax with a bad crack starting where the neck is bolted on and extending down the back almost the length of the guitar. Where it starts it's BAD...you can slide a knife in the crack. As it goes down the back, it's just a crack, but not split open.

It has sentimental value, so I wanna fix it...any ideas? I thought of screwing a flat piece of metal across the crack and some gorilla glue in the deepest part of the crack...

If that crack is that bad I would take it to a professional luthier and have them look at it. Find a private guy. Not someone associated at a store like a Guitar Center. Me and my uncle was talking and he found a guy who lives near me in fact who's phenominal at servicing guitars and setting it up exatly how you like it. Those private guys sometimes are better than the ones in the stores. You find the right guy they can fix that thing up like new.
Google one in your area.

If I can, I wanna do the work myself. I used to take guitars apart and work on em, when I was a kid.

I had a Teisco bass , when I was a kid...think I paid
$20 ( which was like $1000 to me at the time)..not a 4 string..not a 5.. a 3 string bass. one of the machine heads was missing.

I hated sunburst color, so I stripped it down and put it through a planer at a woodworking shop.
When I finished, it was about an inch thick....stained it and was jammin...kinda

I replaced the scratched up black pickguard on my SG with a pearly white one...tryna attach the pickups to it took about 2 hrs:smh:

Replaced the tuning pegs on my Grote with pearly ones to match the fret markers.

Put a lil chrome skull on the pickup selector of my LP Special.

Part of the reason I fuck with the cheaper ones is to use as project guitars.

The cracked one was completely beat to hell...it was my son's first touring guitar and he pulled a Pete Townsend on it...I was all over ebay getting parts and i got it playing again. But the crack is spreading, so I stopped playing it.

Damnnnnn that's a bad broad

Ok..back to the topic hand..

Bruh, hit up Offer up, Clist, pawn shop and get a lil $40..$50 joint and take it apart.

It's really not too hard...not too many parts.

I wanna do a custom paint job on at least one...and I wanna wrap one in vinyl, for the hell of it.

I'ma pickup one of those kits and build one...prolly a Flying V.

Couldn't squeeze the chorus on, so I just wrote it out.
If you wanna check the strumming, I got it from Mark66 on YouTube.
I think he said the first chord of the chorus is a B7

Yeah. That's why I got those Fireflies, to use a couple of them as project guitars. I just haven't gotten around to it yet. When I do, I'm gonna change up the pickups, tuning machines and bridges and then do basic cosmetic shit...knobs and pickguards.

Here's a nice side by side comparison of the sound of Firefly 338 with Gibson ES-335

Bruhhhhh, that Firefly in the vid is SICK!!!

I'm still only one year into playing...I honestly think I'd be able to feel the difference, but alotta the subtleties between a 335 and a Firefly or Grote would be lost on me, until I could appreciate them more...I've never played a real Gibson, so I don't even know what one sounds like in comparison.

But like the guy in the vid...and I'ma go back and watch all of it, my Tele is my main bitch. The Grote was to give me something to play jazzier licks, than what I have. And I mostly play rock, but I wanna expand my repertoire, as I get better.

When I can hear the difference, I'll change the pickups...or if I'm lucky, get a real 335.

As far as my Grote, the finish on it is damn near perfect... I've looked it over from top to bottom and I can't find one blemish, and for $169 brand new and free shipping, I couldn't say no.

I'm tryna find apps to hookup to my rig to get different amps and effects. Bought an irig to interface with my tablets and thought I'd have dozens to pick from...
Didn't work nearly as well as I hoped...

I have a Digitech Rp100 effects pedal...got it used under $50 and it does several amps..the 65 Twin Reverb and Marshall stack are what I use mostly..it even has an acoustic setting that's not awful.

You also have a buncha effects and stuff, but it's not really intuitive, so I'm just getting the hang of it, after several months.

Had a chance to get a Vox wah wah for $30 and I slept on it unfortunately..

Players, what effects y'all using?
