I'm tryna find apps to hookup to my rig to get different amps and effects. Bought an irig to interface with my tablets and thought I'd have dozens to pick from...
Didn't work nearly as well as I hoped...

I have a Digitech Rp100 effects pedal...got it used under $50 and it does several amps..the 65 Twin Reverb and Marshall stack are what I use mostly..it even has an acoustic setting that's not awful.

You also have a buncha effects and stuff, but it's not really intuitive, so I'm just getting the hang of it, after several months.

Had a chance to get a Vox wah wah for $30 and I slept on it unfortunately..

Players, what effects y'all using?
Apps? I have iPads and I like BIAS FX2 and BIAS AMP 2. I have both fully loaded. There's a community where you can download people's user presets or upload your own, which is pretty cool.

I've recorded with AmpliTube several times and gigged with it a few times as well. I have a number of virtual rigs saved for different guitars and songs. I like both apps.

There's a new-isn one I like called MixBox CS that's pretty awesome because it functions as both a standalone and as an AUV3.

Your DigiTech sounds like it serves you well. I've got other gear in storage. The only pedals I keep around the crib is my old Dunlop Wah-Wah.

My mellow!

Appreciate the knowledge, bruh.

I think I tried Amplitude and had a problem.....(my ipad is too old and my other tablet's an android..not sure if I read amplitude is no longer compatible w Android) I'll have to go back and see, cuz for a few days, I tried every app I could and didn't really care for any of them...the latency on one app was so bad it was laughable.

I literally put my irig back in the box and haven't re-opened it in months

I'm definitely gonna check out your recommendations...are Bias fx2, bias amp, and mixbox cs all free apps? Or do they have a free portion?

I'm tryna use apps, as opposed to buying a buncha pedals. @respiration put us on some ones I'm gonna check out.

For rock, I like some crunch...a lil distortion, but for jazz and R&B stuff, I play mostly clean. If you play more jazz, it may not be as important....but I like gadgets..so

Again, Offerup, Mercari, Goodwill, and pawn shops are my go-to spots for finding stuff cheap...my main amp, a lil Fender Frontman, was only $20 at a lawn shop. I see em for sale all the time for $50+ ..

I know AmpliTube has a free version. I think Bias FX and Bias Amp do too. They can be upgraded as one sees fit. MixBox is about 50 bucks, but worth every penny. It's a lot of high end pedals and rack mounted effects, EQs, Compressors etc. And it's AUV3 so it can run in a DAW with multiple instances. Unfortunately, Android doesn't have Bias FX/Amp or MixBox.

Yeah unfortunately Android has a rep for latency on music apps. If cost is an issue, if I were you, I'd look for a refurbished or used basic iPad- something released 2019 or up, and go crazy on the guitar sim apps. If you wanted to get into actual music production, then that's a different recommendation, iPad-wise.

@respiration I checked out some reviews on Bias fx2 and I like it! I didn't see whether it was compatible with Android..didn't appear to be. I'd rather use that than a laptop and my ipad is prolly too old.

As cheap as I am, I might get off $100 and pay for it vs the free version, but first I'ma see what the free one does.

Do you use bias fx2 and bias amp2 at the same to me? Doesn't bias fx2 have amps ? Isn't that redundant?

Lemme know when I've been exhausted my allotment of questions

I don't have a lot of em. The ones I have are very oldschool. Have to get back with you on which ones I have because I don't use them much. I recall a Boss octave pedal and an MXR distortion. Way back in the day, I was using an Alesis Quadraverb II rack.

My virtual rack (AmpliTube) usually consists of Fender Twin, a phaser, X-Chorus, Moller T-Rex, Fender Tape Echo and a Sustainer with a noise gate for the post fx. I tend to play clean-ish. Sometimes I'll stick an EQ into the chain. In most cases I prefer a little delay rather than reverb. Sometimes I'll use the Jazz Chorus for an amp for mellow tones.

You can use them together. Yeah there are amps in Bias Fx2 however if you want more control and more choices of amps they refer you to Bias Amp. That one lets you design your own amp. Pick your tubes, speakers, etc. Last year, they had a holiday "half-off everything" sale so I maxed out all of the in-app purchases for both apps.

That's all @respiration ..

This the kinda info I need to flatten the learning curve.

Sure I could/should read everything I can about the different effects, but having someone (who knows their stuff) walk you through what they are, function, and practical application are invaluable.

It literally could take you years and ALOTTA money to understand all the different options available for players...what's useful and what's a gadget you'll never use.

Perfect example...I'm not at the stage, yet, where I would want to build my own virtual amp. This is where a working pro knows from experience what works in different scenarios...saved me some $$$ right there.

Good point. Ya know, one of the beautiful things about playing the guitar is its so many things to do. Such a vast variety of sounds, things to learn and ways to put them together. I look at anything with that many options as a great way to customize your own into it. I'm so happy I decided now to pick up and learn.

Yyyyyyep

Bruh, I had a 40-some year layoff between when I started playing, as a kid, and when I picked it up again. If I had half the passion for it, as I do now...who knows...

I tell ya, it's so cool having a pro help with explaining stuff that otherwise we'd have to learn on our own.

What tune you working on now?

I just learned a ZZ Top riff, that I heard a guy play, when I was about 13 or 14....didn't even know the name of the song (Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings), but I found the name on YT and a lesson for it.

No problem, Family.

I began to get into music production for pay for the first time around 1993. I knew a few guys who were already doing it but I mostly had to sit down and grind things out myself to learn the intricacies of MIDI, how to sample, sequence, mix, etc. I was able to acquire massive back issues of Keyboard magazine, Guitar Player and Electronic Musician that provided invaluable info on all the above and that also had gear reviews. Like I said in an earlier post, just my ears and (at that time) present day CDs as well as old albums were instructive as far as learning how music was made.

Fast forward to now. Been returning to the scene of the crime for a few years now. It's wild how much more can be done with fewer pieces of gear. Astounding the amount of info that's available for free with just an internet connection. Crazy how accessible it all is. Also, so easy to have convos like this one where good information can be exchanged almost in real time. Google and YouTube alone are revolutionary. If these tools would have been available back in the day? Maaann. Anyone who's not using those regularly as resources to learn, should have their fucking internet permanently cut off. I feel like I'm a student permanently in school... in the best kind of way.

I have no interest in doing this in any greater capacity than just having fun with my friends and fam...I'm telling all my old partnas to start practicing.. we're getting the band back together!

What kinda bass you play? What's a tuner do?

Are they as useful for bass players as for guitarists?

I want a bass eventually... actually sooner than later, but I don't wanna focus on it. It'll prolly just be something I play around with.

There are guitar tuners. I have 7 basses, 4 & 5 strings. Tuners are very helpful. I also know how to tune by ear, but I don't want to work that hard!

Question for the bass players..

On Fenders what's the chrome piece....I think it sits over the pickups..for?

You don't see it often anymore...mostly on basses from the 70s. I think most people remove it. But what's it's purpose?

I'm not a bassist per se, but...
The metal of which you speak was a pickup cover. Presumably at some point early on, folks thought pickups were unsightly. lol.

Here's a bonus bass tip from the legend Carol Kaye

tip 100

About muting: The way I mute the strings is by folding over a piece of felt muting (buy at the sewing section at Target, Walmart etc.) so it's doubled to a width of about 1-1/2". Take it and tape it (I use masking tape) to on top of the bridge area, but laying slightly ahead of the bridges. It won't be too loose but you will have to re-tape it tighter from time to time. Thus, it lays on top of the strings and kills the over- and under-tones, making your bass sounds more defined. You use a doubled up piece of felt *on top* of the strings when you play *only* with a pick. If you play with fingers (or even with fingers sometime and then pick sometime), then get a piece of foam about the same width, but fit *underneath* the strings, barely touching the strings. This takes some doing. You don't want the foam to mute the strings so much it gives off a "plunk" sound, yet you need it to touch all the strings relatively the same amount. The strings in all instances should ring almost as much as if there wasn't any muting at all. You'll notice an immediate difference in sound and your band will too as well as the audience noticing the bass sounding great and projecting very well too. In recording, it's a must. If you have a bridge cover and are using a doubled up piece of felt, lay it between the that rubber "mute" (that is practically useless) in the bridge cover and the strings, but....do raise the bridge-cover slightly so the strings ring....you will have to stick a couple of wedges underneath the bridge-cover so it stays up without rattling (I always used 2-3 picks). This is the sound you want, a ringing sound but without all the extraneous noises of over- and under-tones the strings get. This will work fine. You'll see my mute (with the "fancy" masking tape) in my pictures with the Aria Pro II (Steve Bailey bass), my bass w/Seymour Duncan Basslines PUs and Thomastik jazz flats.
