Anyone On Here Play The Guitar/Bass?

No, knowing the key comes from looking at the sheet music or just experience or the leader telling the band. Take a look at the definition of music theory. The wheel you're talking about is called the circle of fifths and it's a good idea to learn but it's not like carved in stone essential.

Anyway, loads of musicians don't know music theory or even care about it and they do just fine. It was just a suggestion. The one thing no book or teacher can give you is time on your instrument. That is up to you, so keep on plucking my brother.

And bend those strings!
Circle of fifths your right. I was trying to remember the name of it. Yup, but your right, there are so many things to learn on the guitar and a million and one ways to learn as well. I think that's the beauty of playing an instrument in general. Nothing is set in stone and you can be so creative with everything you do. I'm excited to take this journey. I'm always excited to learn something new.

C/S like a.mofo...my son has been playing professionally in bands for years and doesn't know theory...but he learned by playing for hours on end.

We were playing together recently and normally he'll play some stuff that'll have me in awe...fast heavy metal riffs, but then he started doing a classical type finger picking that totally blew me away, cuz I know how difficult that is.. especially since that's not in a style you normally play.

Time on your instrument is what I've found to be key for me...I try to have alot of structured practice, but also I'll spend alotta time just messing around... especially while I'm watching tv.

I eventually wanna know more theory, but now I'm playing, learning new technique (been practicing the tapping on the solo for Eruption), learning new riffs and songs..
Your absolutely right. Time on your instrument is so very precious. Everytime I play I feel as though I'm getting a little better.

Absolutely. When you hear about the greats, I mean the stratospheric greats, you hear about their legendary 10, 12, 14 hour-a-day practicing. Most of them either learned some music theory or were just so damn talented they picked it up without formal study.
That's not 99.99% of musicians, however.

Let me put it this way: we all know how to speak English. So music theory would be like studying English in college because you want to know more about the language, maybe improve your writing or speaking a bit. So you get a BA. Some people like it so much they want to know more and get an MA because they want to write or edit better. And some people love it so much they want to understand the full scope of the beauty so they get a Ph.D. But at the end of the day, we're all still speaking English.

And English, all language, is a means of communication. And music is a language. Does it matter if I have a Ph.D. if you can understand me?
Excellent way of putting in Knight.:clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:

I put playing the guitar on hold a long time ago.
And for production of music I use https://www.amplesound.net/en/index.asp.

F-Major chord killed me when I was trying to learn the real guitar,

Someone told me last year to just play in a key that doesn't use F-Major chord. That suggestion made me think I can do it.

Or just invert it. Think of Steve Cropper and all those strange chords he played. Many of them were just inverted. But they work.

And damned right you can do it.

Man, she's nice! When I was a kid, my first 2 guitars were sunburst and I hated that finish for years...just seemed plain af.

Now, I want at least one sunburst guitar...just has a classic look.

I have an SX Les Paul Special in brown and I thought about wrapping it in a tobacco burst skin..then I found out the wrap was $90..smh

It is a classic finish. I thought about getting the Strat in black but I didn't like the white in the center. In a few months I'm also gonna start playing bass as well. Fuck waiting years to do both. I wanna become great at guitar and bass now and I will apply myself to master both. Gonna get the P bass in Sunburst as well. So my whole collection will be in Sunburst.

I had a Squier strat in black and white...bought it used and fixed it up...the frets were terrible...smoothed em down, played it awhile, but gave it to my GF...she said she was gonna learn (insert Shaq rolling eyes face)...but I really want a real strat..just not black. I want a white one or a different color than what I have..

I know we have a couple of pro bassists, but I assumed there'd be more guitar players on the board.

I'll get a bass at some point, just to play around with, but I'ma try to focus on one thing for now...

Yeah man I'm determined to do them both and master them both. You can accomplish anything if you are serious and put your mind to it. I got a jump on the guitar for a year and that's a good thing. It'll be a year and a half before I start with the bass in June/July. The key is to embrace the differences between the two and develope quality structured practice sessions. Know specifically what you wanna work on. Chord switches, scales, power chords, barre chords, arpeggios, overall speed on the fret....ect. There are so many great online methods out there to help as well. For bass, I'm gonna go with Scott bass lessons. Dude is phenomenal with bass. Check out some of his YouTube videos. His online bass classes are ranked No. 1 by just about everyone. He'll help get you to play like a professional in no time. I can't wait to get started with it. I embrace learning something new and I'm determined to master both guitar and bass.

They don't know the struggle, bruh

I feel ya tho...
Man that shit was fuckin incredible. Figured out was I was doing wrong. I was trying to angle the finger a little too much. It's only a very slight angle to play on the side of your finger. Also, I put a slight curve in my finger. Shit rang out clean like a muthafucka!!!! I told my wife she was like whatever :rolleyes2: I was like "BITCH!!!":angry::angry: You know how fuckin hard this shit is to get initially!!!? But all the stories I heard about barre chords are true. One day your gonna practice them and they're just gonna magically work. Provided you've worked on them over and over and over and over and over.........

Picked up an Acoustic, Bass, Electric and Ukulele. Got three songs I can play on each right now. Started in September 2020. Pandemic Talent . Looooong way to go. Great thread.

It starts with one song...what can you play?

I have a list of all the songs and riffs I can play...I've only been playing for a year, but once you can play a few songs, the only difference is practicing any song...you put in the work and you'll be able to get it.

Coolest shit in the world is to be ble to play the riffs to just about any of my all time favorite songs..

Yep, once I figured out how I needed to angle my fingers, it was a wrap...

That's why I practice the most mundane shit over and over til ...JUST like you said..you just finally can play it..

Hardest shit for me to play has been Purple Rain... I can play it easier in a different key, but that lil mofo must have super long freak fingers to be able to stretch out some of them chords

It’s definitely a drug. A real good habit. When everyone in the house is sleep I hook up to my Vox amp and keep going.

I got people above me, so I play through my headphones, but I have it so loud, I can hear em clearly, when they're sitting on the table.

But when they leave, I can barely turn my lil amp up past 2 or 3. That shit is LOUD AF!!

Have a Fender Mustang v1 (don't use much) and a Frontman 15g with a mod pedal that I use most of the time..

I was just plugging in to play when I saw these latest posts

Yup. Not only the strength, but the speed for that lil muthafucka to go up and down the neck like that. :eek2::eek2::eek2::eek2: You get a deeper sense of appreciation when your a musician and understand what these guys like Prince and Ernie Isley are doing with the guitar.:clap::clap::clap::clap:

I learned Smoke on The Water on the bass E string 48 years ago...just learned the right way to play it recently

Just learned Bad to the Bone...which is just an ol blues standard riff...

I love playing over blues tracks on youtube. It's great practice for how to build solos..which key to play in..how to play with feeling..

Here's the bad to the Bone riff...

Play the A D & G strings open, bar them at the 5th fret...play them open, bar them at the 3rd fret and open again..super simple.

Post those tabs for Cruise, bruh..
