Arrow's Stephen Amell Will Play Pro Wrestler In New TV Drama
You have failed this wrestling federation.

Stephen Amell says he's done moonlighting as a professional wrestler, but he's not quite finished with the wrestling industry. With The CW's Arrow currently filming its eighth and final season, the star has already lined up his next project. He will play a small town wrestler in an upcoming Starz drama.

The news comes from TVLine, which reports Amell has signed on to star in Heels, an eight-episode series about a small-town wrestling persona. The current Green Arrow will play Jack, who is the main villain of a regional wrestling group in Georgia known as the Duffy Wrestling Association. When he's not in the ring, Jack is the owner of the company, as well as a husband and father trying to make ends meet while keeping the DWA alive--and build it into a wrestling empire.

There are few other details about the project at this point. However, TVLine reveals the show will revolve around Jack and his brother, who are at war over the family-owned wrestling company and the legacy left by their late father.

Amell's first foray into the wrestling industry came with a match at WWE SummerSlam in 2015. He followed that with a bout in Ring of Honor in 2017 and his final match at 2018's All Out. The actor recently told GameSpot that chances of him getting back in the ring were incredibly slim. He's still clearly interested in the industry though--and the friends he's made in it. Already, Amell has asked All Elite Wrestling's Cody Rhodes to join him on the series via Twitter. Rhodes previously appeared in multiple episodes of Arrow.

A premiere for Heels has not been announced at this point. Amell is currently filming the final episodes of Arrow, as well as the upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event.

Arrow deleted scene finally solves mystery of why the team distrusted each other in the future

The deleted season 7 scene also hints at Diggle's relationship with the team in the future.

One of the questions that has lingered from Arrow season 7 is why Diggle’s son Connor Hawke (Joseph David-Jones) initially distrusted Future Roy (Colton Haynes) and Dinah (Juliana Harkavy) when they crossed paths for the first time in season 7. Well, we finally have our answer.

In the exclusive deleted scene above from season 7’s “Star City Slayer” (a.k.a. the episode that revealed Katherine McNamara’s Mia was Oliver and Felicity’s daughter), Roy and Dinah ask Connor why he tied them up in the dilapidated bunker if he knows who they are. But that’s the thing, he really doesn’t know them.

“You people are just names to me. People my father used to work with,” says Connor. “There’s no telling what’s happened to you since then.”

Of course, if you watched the season, then you know things got better from here; however, what’s interesting about this scene is that Connor also hints that Future Diggle (David Ramsey) might not trust his former allies either. “Be happy that you were here with me and not with him,” says Connor, barely making eye contact with Arsenal and Canary.

What could he mean by this? As of right now, we do know that the eighth and final season will reveal more about Diggle family dynamics in the future. In July, the superhero drama announced that Russian Doll‘s Charlie Barnett was cast as the adult version of John “J.J.” Diggle Jr., who became the leader of the Deathstroke Gang following a rift between him and the rest of his family. “We’re going to have a bit of sibling rivalry in our future story line,” Arrow showrunner Beth Schwartz previously told EW.

This scene — along with more deleted scenes, a gag reel, and couple featurettes — is included on the Arrow: The Complete Seventh Season DVD and Blu-ray set, out Aug. 20. The Blu-ray set also comes with all three “Elseworlds” crossover episodes.

Arrow returns Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 9 p.m. on The CW.

“Russian Doll” standout Charlie Barnett is joining the “Arrowverse.”

Barnett, who is having a busy year having also appeared in Netflix’s “Tales of the City,” comes on board in the series regular role of John Diggle, Jr., son of David Ramsey’s character. News of his casting was announced at the show’s farewell Comic-Con panel where things got suitably emotional. The CW series is coming to an end after season 8, which premieres in October.

Executive producer Marc Guggenheim teased that Barnett’s character has “a bit of an edge to him” and will wear a costume that fans will find “very surprising.”

Guggenheim and co. went on to talk about why they decided to end the show after eight outings.

“We wanna go out while people are still talking about the show and the show is still the show, we don’t want to turn it into something less than just to keep going,” said executive producer Marc Guggenheim.

The EP also threw it back the very beginning and recalled lead actor Stephen Amell’s audition.

“Stephen came in, very first audition, very first person, and the moment he opened his mouth it was like we’re ok, we’re fine,” he said.

“I was shirtless a the time,” Amell quipped in return to loud whoo’s from the packed hall of fans.

Several of the other actors took turns to pay tribute to Amell and the work he put in as number one on the call sheet.

“I remember when we shot the pilot I said to Stephen don’t F this up,” said Katie Cassidy. “He obviously didn’t, he did the contrary, I’m so proud of him and everybody on our show.”

While David Ramsey told the story of one of the first times he met Amell in a Vancouver hotel.

“Stephen’s there shirtless and he’s talking to me about how happy he is with the show and how he can’t wait to work with me…and all I saw were abs and earlobes because he had muscles on his earlobes,” Ramsey joked. “There would not have been any comic book universe on TV…without Stephen Amell.”

Arrow” is The CW’s longest-running current DC Comics series and Amell posted a note on Twitter when the news broke of the show’s end expressing his gratitude for playing the role: “Playing Oliver Queen has been the greatest professional experience of my life… but you can’t be a vigilante forever…There’s so much to say… for now I just want to say thank you.”

Arrow” launched on The CW in 2012 and remains one of the network’s highest-rated shows. It helped spawn what has come to be known as the “Arrowverse,” an inter-connected universe of other DC shows. The other current “Arrowverse” shows are “The Flash,” “Supergirl,” and “Legends of Tomorrow.” A new addition in “Batwoman,” starring Ruby Rose, will be joining the “Arrowverse” this fall.

MICHAEL TRAN/FILMMAGIC
Stephen Amell has found his first post-Arrow acting gig.

The longtime CW star will topline a drama series at stars about small-town pro wrestling.

The project from Michael Waldron (Community) is titled Heels — the term for a wrestler who portrays a villain in the ring. Deadline first reported the news.

The official description: “Set in a close-knit Georgia community, Heels follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals war over their late father’s legacy. In the ring, somebody must play the good guy and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel. But in the real world, those characters can be hard to live up to — or hard to leave behind.”

Amell plays Jack, “the charismatic villain — or heel — of the Duffy Wrestling Association. In the real world, he’s its hard-working owner, a husband and father trying to make ends meet while fighting to realize his impossible dreams. He has the mind of an artist in the body of a warrior, and a Steve Jobs-ian need for perfection — and for control. He says he’ll do whatever it takes to build the DWA into an empire. Will he go so far as to risk his marriage, or his relationship with his brother?”

The actor is currently filming the eighth and final season for Arrow.

Rumor: Green Lantern Show Starring David Ramsey Pitched to The CW
JB Augustine

August 27, 2019

Television

Arrow is wrapping up its almost decade-long tenure on The CW and will leave the door open for a few possible spinoffs to take its place. One of those could star DC’s other emerald knight, however, there would be a new angle to it.

Sources close to We Got This Covered say a spinoff starring David Ramsey as not Spartan but, in fact, Green Lantern was pitched to the network. Ramsey would still play Diggle; he just becomes the Lantern Corps’ new protector of Earth, designated by Oa as Sector 2814.

Diggle’s status as a Lantern on other Earths, and that he is a double for John Stewart, was a fan theory before being adopted as Arrowverse canon in the Elseworld’s crossover. John Wesley Shipp’s Barry Allen from Earth-90 recognized John and wondered why he wasn’t wearing his ring — a clear reference to the Corps.

John Stewart wielded a green power ring in the comics before and became very popular as the Green Lantern in Justice League Unlimited and the larger DC Animated Universe. Ramsey is also rumored to bear the ring in the next crossover — Crisis on Infinite Earths — as John Stewart. (Related: Report: CW Crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths Will Feature DCEU Characters Plus Lynda Carter, Burt Ward, and Tom Welling!)

A Green Lantern spinoff being pitched doesn’t mean it is greenlit. Katie Cassidy Rodgers (Laurel and Black Canary on Arrow) said she pitched a new Birds of Prey series as an Arrow spinoff. Chances of that might be helped or hurt by the movie coming out in February.

Green Lantern Movie Plans

The same goes for a Green Lantern pitch which could be hurt by plans for a Green Lantern Corps movie that’s been in the pipeline for a while. JJ Abrams, as we reported, might have his own designs for a Green Lantern feature whether that involves the Corps or not. (Related:Report: J.J. Abrams Might Be the Next to Take on Superman and Green Lantern)

A Green Lantern Corps film was officially announced via Geoff Johns’ Mad Ghost Productions website. The site confirmed the planned film will feature both Hal Jordan and John Stewart as Green Lanterns. (Related: Green Lantern Corps Film Characters Officially Confirmed!)

In a press release DC revealed the film would be based off Johns’ Green Lantern run in the comics which included the Sinestro Corps War, War of the Green Lanterns, Green Lantern: Agent Orange, Green Lantern: Rebirth, Revenge of the Black Hand, Green Lantern: No Fear, Blackest Night and more. However, no word on this film has been heard since June of last year. It’s quite possible the new Abrams deal might supersede Johns’ planned Green Lantern Corps movie.

Warner Bros. may be hesitant to get bogged down in too many GL projects at once. Ryan Reynolds’ stab at the cosmic adventurer floundered critically and commercially, failing to launch the Extended Universe.

WGTC’s coverage of new shows was accurate in the case of Ms. Marvel which is happening for Disney+.

It’s time to start getting ready to say goodbye to Arrow.

The series that kickstarted The CW’s entire Arrowverse shared universe is about to end for good with the 10-episode final season, debuting next month. And now fans are finally getting their first look at the last batch of new episodes with the official season 8 trailer.

After the first small glimpse of new footage in the Comic-Con sizzle reel, this full-length trailer, above, reveals a sneak peek of Oliver Queen’s (Stephen Amell) mission to save the multiverse, which will culminate in the upcoming “Crisis on Infinite Earths” five-part crossover with The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and new series Batwoman.

Many familiar faces are returning for Arrow‘s swan song. It has already been revealed that Willa Holland (Thea Queen), John Barrowman (Malcolm Merlyn), Susanna Thompson (Moira Queen), Colin Donnell (Tommy Merlyn), Josh Segarra (Adrian Chase), Byron Mann (Yao Fei), and Rila Fukushima (Tatsu Yamashiro) are all coming back to reprise their roles this season, with most of them teased in the new footage along with Lexa Doig’s Talia al Ghul. Plus, new series regular Charlie Barnett (Russian Doll) makes his debut in the trailer having also joined the cast for the final season as the adult version of John Diggle Jr., a.k.a. J.J., the son of Diggle (David Ramsey) and Lyla (Audrey Marie Anderson).

But Arrow ending after this season doesn’t mean this will be the last we’ll see of some of the fan-favorite characters.

It was announced earlier on Tuesday that the long-running superhero drama’s producers are developing a female-centric Arrowverse series. The potential show will be introduced via a backdoor pilot in Arrow‘s eighth and final season and would star Katherine McNamara as Mia Smoak/Green Arrow, as well as Katie Cassidy Rodgers (Laurel Lance) and Juliana Harkavy (Dinah Drake) as the Canaries.

Arrow‘s eighth and final season premieres Oct. 15 at 9 p.m. on The CW.
