I never said I dont identify as Black American....but I dont reject the west african heritage in my make up... you are an African American no matter how much you hate it
I dont know why you feel awkward about it... you were given the designation black by the same crackas and you carry that proudly... in fact your arguing to defend it.

It's been 100s maybe 1000s of years since people in my bloodline have been anywhere on African soil. We was all in Jamaica just last June.
It just seem more natural to identify with the part of one's culture that they encounter and navigate on a daily basis
And not for nothing but have you ever be called an African-American in front of an actual African. I know everyone is different so I'm not making any blanket statements. But back in high school we had an kid from Ghana come in halfway thru my 11th grade year and he did NOT fuck with that term African-American.
Not for himself and not evening for Black Americans in the school. I never got to really sit down and talk to him about it, but I remember how he'd be ready to throw hands over that African-American term.

The ONLY reason black people reject their own heritage and question other blacks claim is because WE DONT KNOW the specifics of heritage..but we know WHY we dont know it and that reason should go on the list of reasons why Black Americans should get reparations. Every other ethnic group in this country can claim specific countries and ethnic groups within those countries.... YOU can't do that because all we have as BLACK americans is a skin color designation. And that is a direct result of the Atlantic slave trade. LOSS OF IDENTITY.
The stripping of identity isn't a normal function of slavery as an institution. Mainly because slaves are usually taken and trafficked in the region they live. Today,, slaves in parts of africa that still allow it know who they are and where they come from. A unique aspect of the atlantic slave trade was that the victims of it were stripped of their identities in the new world. Thats something that happened once they arrived in the Caribbean and colonies.
As fucked over as native groups were in their lands (Native Americans, Aborigines (Australia), Ainu (Japan) central and south American peoples, Filipinos (south east Asians) etc) they still had some connection to their original identities, culture, language, religion even if they had to mask it in cac shit. In fact its been noted that the slave rebellions in the Caribbean were successful because those enslaved people had a stronger connection to their identity more so than the mainland American slaves. Even as they used European religion and culture as a cover (Santeria for example).
Being stripped of the knowledge of who you are and where you come from is more psychologically damaging that losing your freedom. (see the reasonings black folks been giving in this thread)
So the notion that African American is illegit because YOU HAVENT BEEN THERE is just plain stupid.

Because most of us don't know the particulars of our African heritage beyond the most general knowledge of you came from this continent (hence the generalized term AFRICAN-american rather than say Nigerian-american or Ghanian-american and you can break it down even further from there) therefore we're stuck with a skin color designation of black..and we've been building a culture and heritage from that while at the same time acknowledging that we do come from SOMEWHERE in the world.

Public schools are meant to indoctrinate the children of the poor to the social hierarchy. Private schools are meant to maintain the appearance of the social hierarchy.
