Four transfer commits in one day: OL Justin Mayers the latest to join the herd

by Adam Munsterteiger8 hours ago
Offensive linemen are lining up to try to protect quarterback Shedeur Sanders in 2024.

The Buffaloes landed the nation's top ranked offensive tackle in the 2024 class this past Thursday, then Colorado added three new offensive line transfers on Saturday. Former UTEP offensive lineman Justin Mayers was the latest to make the announcement, joining former Houston offensive lineman Tyler Johnson and former UConn offensive lineman Yakiri Walker in making the call. The Buffs also picked up a new commitment from NC State receiver transfer Terrell Timmons Jr. on Saturday.

The 6-foot-3, 309-pound Mayers was a hot commodity once he hit the transfer portal this past week, drawing in 17 offers. Boston College, Louisville, Houston, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Texas, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, Temple, Texas State, Texas Tech, UConn, USF, UTSA, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech also extended an offer to Mayers before he committed to Colorado on his official visit Saturday.

Mayers has played a total of 1,736 offensive snaps at the collegiate level, all at UTEP. He graded out at 77.9 as a starter in all 12 games at left guard this past season, per Pro Football Focus.

Originally from Frisco, Texas, Mayers will be a graduate transfer with one year of eligibility remaining.

NIL isn't the reason why the Tennessee Vols missed on key recruit

NIL isn't the reason why the Tennessee Vols missed on key recruit't the reason why the Tennessee Vols missed on key recruit

When five-star offensive lineman Jordan Seaton spurned the Tennessee Vols (plus Ohio State, Oregon, and Alabama) in favor of the Colorado Buffaloes earlier this week, the immediate reaction from fans was that NIL must have played a factor.

What else would explain choosing a program that's trending in the wrong direction (Colorado lost eight of its last nine games in 2023) over several programs that are in a much more stable situation?

49ers' latest injury news will force rookie into bigger role

It turns out, though, that Tennessee offered Seaton a substantial NIL deal to come to Rocky Top.

According to WBIR, Tennessee offered Seaton a seven figure deal to sign with the Vols.

While it's unclear what kind of NIL money Seaton may have received from Colorado, it's hard to imagine that it's significantly more than what Tennessee was offering.

Colorado coach Deion Sanders, in fact, has maintained that he's not "buying" players/recruits this offseason.

"We want players that want us," said Sanders to The Athletic last month. "Trying to convince somebody and doing that, being held hostage financially, we ain't with that. We're not going to buy anybody whatsoever. We have tremendous needs. I'm pretty sure everybody in the country knows what we need and how much we need. That's not a secret and recruits are responding."

Sanders told The Athletic that NIL deals would be handled on the "back end", insinuating that players at Colorado only receive legitimate NIL deals based on companies wanting to partner with players.

Tennessee clearly did all they could to bring Seaton to Knoxville. But ultimately, it appears that Seaton preferred the glitz and glamor of the Colorado sidelines to teams with winning records.

Seaton's comments after visiting Tennessee for the Vols' game against Georgia last month indicated that seeing celebrities on the sideline was going to be an important factor in his decision.

There's not much Tennessee can do to land a player when that's the priority.

How is Colorado "trending in the wrong direction" when they won 1 game the year before...

Never seen so many articles trying to tear down a program or Coach... These Cacs are so mad...

Man Deion did a masterful job of recruiting thru his pressers during the season. Every time he was in front of a camera he actually said something about recruiting.

I’m surprised Aaron Butler decommited. He left school early to enroll at Colorado early. I wonder what happened.

I’m not to familiar with his situation, so The only assumption I can make is “Money talks” which could be far from the truth…

The guy they got today, kinda fits the same roll as Aaron.

Also if they flip this other kid, then you’d have two of those type players

Just letting y’all know where the class is ranked….
This with the couple players saying they ain’t coming…

Shit been masterful over this last week…

This all Cory Philip and Deion….

They don’t even have an offensive coordinator….

Remember the class was ranked 70th with 10 and them talking head folks was bumping their gums

Now it’s 29th with 10 players, don’t be surprised if it’s too 15 by Sunday

Butter daddy clear things up a bit….said they didn’t have conversations with coach prime

Which led to them going else where

Now someone else(another recruit) said they was not made priority, which they didn’t like

You are reading this incorrectly. The overall is not the real ranking. It is the composite score

NIL is just another name for boosters.

Start an LLC. Create a Bs 'energy drink' or clothing line. Give the kid a milly to come to your school.

Coach Prime say that D-line coming now that offense line got the attention…

So I’m guessing a d tackle coach will get hired soon…

Then they spend that money on them big boys…

Announce the offensive coordinator
Then sign that the top running back and a backup qb

With 5 additions in 72 hours, Deion Sanders making good on promise to revamp Colorado's offensive line

Coach Prime promised reinforcements ahead of the 2024 season and so far, he's delivering.

Brad Crawford12 hrs
Deion Sanders is making good on his promise of talented reinforcements in the 2024 recruiting cycle ahead of his second season at Colorado. The ever-aggressive coach of the Buffaloes is on a recruiting tear following recent commitments from 2024 five-star offensive tackle Jordan Seaton and Top247 wide receiver Drelon Miller, two of the most decorated prospects in this class with offers from several elite programs.

In addition, Colorado landed four transfer commits on Saturday, overhauling an offensive line that rated as the Power Five's worst this season. Per Buff Stampede, former UTEP offensive lineman Justin Mayers was the latest to make the announcement, joining former Houston offensive lineman Tyler Johnson, former UConn offensive lineman Yakiri Walker and former Indiana lineman Kahlil Benson in making the call. Four of Colorado's six transfer additions (so far) are offensive linemen.

This comes after an anonymous coach told The Athletic this month there was "no way in hell" Colorado would revamp its offensive front with an entirely new group of starters for Shedeur Sanders ahead of next season. In fact, Deion Sanders has appeared to do it in 72 hours.

The Buffaloes produced early success in 2023 with a 3-0 start and AP Top 25 ranking before losing eight of their last nine games to finish with a 4-8 record in Year 1 under coach Sanders. With the transfer portal window now open, Colorado intends to maintain its aggressive approach while addressing key needs.

"When you you watched us play, what did you say?," Sanders said in an interview with 247Sports' Carl Reed last week. "'Oh boy, if they just had some protection for Shedeur (Sanders) or if they could just get after that passer, oh, they would be ...' We're going to address that. We got to address that in the portal and from the high school rankings. You got to understand, high school to me is like draft choices in the NFL, the portal is free agency. And we're in free agency right now. And I'm thankful that we have and we will have the wherewithal to go get what we need."

Colorado ranked second-worst among all FBS teams in sacks allowed (56) and sixth-worst among Power Five teams in tackles for loss allowed (86) this season. The Buffaloes were last in the FBS in rushing offense, averaging just 68.92 yards per game on only 2.31 yards per carry.

Sanders said addressing the offensive line is one of the priorities for Colorado as it looks ahead to the 2024 season.

"How important? It's a priority," Sanders said. "We have two priorities right now: we're gonna run the football and we're going to stop the run. We're going to protect Shedeur (Sanders). ... So we're going to be very active in the portal: offensive line, defensive line, linebackers, a few corners. I'm looking for some dog corners from FCS schools. I'm telling you right now, I'm looking for you. You know I ain't hard to find. I'm going to find you. But that's what I want. We're going to put it together."

Five of the eight losses this season for Colorado came by a one-possession deficit. Only twice were the Buffaloes blown out by more than two touchdowns — Oregon and Washington State.

With the addition of Seaton, Colorado's 2024 group of commits ranks No. 29 nationally per 247Sports. The Buffaloes are also No. 1 in the 247Sports Transfer Rankings.

Cody Nagel contributed to this report.
