I'm somewhat with you, but at least they are doing it in a different way that fits the tone of the series. Even though I'm not sure what the characters powers exactly are beyond the switch or if the powers are the same regardless of the switch.
They are kind of doing a teenage/early adult series, so honestly the topics they are discussing mental health, sexually identity etc.. are kind the norm. It's similar to how the Boys focus is on politics or societal issues adults may relate to more.
Male: Strength, Durability. Female: Speed, Agility, Concussive Energy Blast.
