A lot of people are tossing out the baby with the bath water on this season. The fact is, if you were a Day 1 fan for all 8 seasons and you expected a happy ending, I'm not sure what show you were watching. So in true GoT fashion, some fan favorites didn't get a great send off but a lot of characters did. All of Ned Starks surviving kids are thriving -- Bran is King, Sansa Queen of the North, and Arya is a badass warrior woman, slayer of the Night King and hero of the Battle at Winterfell. Tyrion is the Hand, a role that he managed well earlier in the series, keeping Joffery & Cersei in check as much as one can. Samwell Tarley, is the head of house Tarley, father of 2, and a Grand fucking Maester (not bad for a scared, pudgy, virgin forced to the Wall). Bronn, the sellsword who traded up to lead one of the wealthiest houses in Westeros and a seat at the table as Master of Coin. Davos, an illiterate pirate smuggler is now the Master of Ships. Brienne not only managed to be the first female knight, she's the Lord Commander of the KingsGuard. Gendry's a legit Baratheon, Lord of Storm's End, smasher of Arya.
So there were some satisfying endings to be found in the finale. Hell, even though Jon didn't become King, just remember he kept saying he never wanted to be. In fact when you think about it, aside from surviving execution by the Unsullied or Drogon, Jon really got what he always wanted. Back in Season 1, he talked about how he looked up to his Uncle Benjen, a ranger in the Night's Watch. And that's exactly what he is now, a ranger leading the free folk North of the Wall.
