Race is a social construct. The way you identify yourself is far less important than the box everyone else puts you in.
In that sense I'm Homer Plessy black. Same proportion of African ancestry. Same European features. People generally consider me white, but there's been a few noteworthy times when they didn't.
I acted out a lot in high school. Principal asked my dad if my "black blood" might be part of the problem.
Went to jail in 2010. The Puerto Rican guy showing me around the block told me that the woods probably won't claim me so I should eat at the "others" table in the chow hall.
I have a long time friend and DJ client that was almost my sister-in-law at one point. Things soured when I described myself as white. They haven't been quite the same since.
I'm not latino, but my last name looks Spanish. If you pronounce it with three syllables instead of two it sounds Spanish as well. One time at a criminal court appearance the judge called me to the bench with three syllables. After spending the day watching brown folks get years on years I decided it was best to not respond and risk a warrant.
If I was caught up in the middle of a race riot and somebody's flat-out asked me if I was black or white I would say Black. Not because it suits me, but because I don't want to be on the side that pits me again most of my friends and family. If I get killed so be it. Still better than spending the rest of my life as the enemy

At one time people called asians orientals but its not done today because not only is it offensive its inaccurate. I contend that calling africans black is inaccurate as well. And African American is more accurate than Black too.

This isn't a new question, black people in america have been thinking about this for at least the last 70 or so years if not longer. Its where the X came from for the Black Muslims in the 60s. But I don't know if the last couple of generations (X and millennials) have thought about the extent of the damage done to black americans due to race science and the atlantic slave trade. That the specifics of our African heritage has been forever lost and altered to a group of people who have for the last 100 years at least been looking for an identity. Its where you get moors and 5 percenters and anything Egypt (even tho the enslaved Africans came from west African countries and Egypt is in east Africa.) and so on. Its why your questioning me even questioning the notion of whose black...because black is the most consistent identity we've had since arriving in the country.
Negro is spanish for black...ngger, nigga, nigra etc is just a bastardized slang for negro=black it all comes back to the same thing.
Maybe that explains why pretty much every other group (to my knowledge) does not use the slur pertaining to them in their pop culture to the degree that black americans do. The n-word permeates every aspect of our culture and entertainment to the point where its weird if we DON'T hear it uttered at some point.
But unlike pretty much any other group in american society you have one group thats been completely cut off from its original heritage and ethnicity and MAYBE thats why the n-word flows so easily from the descendants of the african slaves because thats what we've been called more than anything else in this country..its a part of our AMERICAN history.

Plessy, a so-called octoroon, decided to expose the absurdity of New Orleans segregated streetcars by buying a ticket for the white section. Once the train was in motion he declared to the conductor that he was Black. At that point a private investigator made a citizen's arrest so that Plessy could fight the case in court and set a precedent.
It doesn't matter if the picture commonly used is Governor Pinchback or Ronald McDonald. If Plessy didn't look white he never would have been able to buy that ticket in the first place.

I'm about to quit my strip club job on Wednesday. I realize they only hired me because I'm "white" man. Figured that out when they used me to "encourage" a group of black men to leave early.
The reason I'm waiting until Wednesday is because there's a staff meeting and I want to make sure everybody knows why I'm leaving. Don't want anyone to be able to play it off and say it was a personality clash, a fit of anger, or any other cop out.
IMO that has a lot more to do with being true to myself then whatever box they have me check on the census.

In a predictable turn of events, Dwayne Johnson has walked back his support of Joe Rogan after a video of the podcaster saying the N-word went viral last week. Johnson had initially spoken out in support of Rogan following the ongoing Spotify controversy, commenting on Rogan’s response video, “Great stuff here, brother. Perfectly articulated. Look forward to coming on [the podcast] one day and breaking out the tequila with you.” After author Don Winslow tagged Johnson in a tweet linking to the compilation video, Johnson replied, “Thank you so much for this. I hear you as well as everyone here 100%.” He continued, “I was not aware of his N word use prior to my comments, but now I’ve become educated to his complete narrative. Learning moment for me.” Rogan has since apologized for his usage of the N-word, calling the video “fucking horrible, even to me,” but adding that the clips were “taken out of context.” Spotify has deleted over 100 episodes of The Joe Rogan Experience in the past few days, and various public figures are continuing to boycott the streaming service over its platforming of Rogan and COVID-19 misinformation.
