Joker Set Photo May Tease Possible Plot Details

A new set photo from Joker may tease possible plot details. Though director Todd Phillips' origin story for the Clown Prince of Crime doesn't open in theaters for over a year, fans have already seen plenty of what the filmmaker has in store. With production now underway, Phillips himself has been the source of many looks at the new movie, as he revealed Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck (both sans clown makeup and in full Joker garb) and Zazie Beetz's character. There's also been a bevy of images and videos from the set, depicting the Joker terrorizing a subway (among other things).
All of this has gone a great way in changing the conversation around Joker. When it was first announced, some people questioned the project, but now viewers are starting to come around. Of course, what will make or break Joker is the story it tells, which reportedly follows Arthur's failed attempt to become a comedian. Plot details are largely being kept under wraps for now, but another set leak might provide more clues.

A gallery of set photos from Evening Standard includes the front page of the Gotham Post, which features a story about three "masked bandits" stealing a church collection box. The text in the story mentions a priest was "violently threatened" and only one person spoke during the robbery.

While this very well could be something Arthur does in the film, it's worth keeping in mind the newspaper story could be in reference to anybody. Gotham, of course, isn't exactly the cleanest city, with several criminals running amuck. The church theft may not factor heavily into the story, but this does establish context and gives audiences an idea of how bad things are in Gotham. Not even a place of worship like a church is safe. Some of the other set photos hinted at unrest on Gotham's streets, with citizens holding signs calling for the taxation of the rich, so Joker could include a story thread where Gotham's poor organize a string of crimes as a way to get back at corrupt establishments and the city's elite. Perhaps the emergence of the Joker galvanizes them to fight for what they believe is theirs.
Teases like this are certainly intriguing, and it'll be interesting to see what else about Joker comes out during filming. Phillips is aware the paparazzi will be out in full force, trying to get whatever shots they can. It's for that reason the director decided to unveil his own high-quality photos and videos, and he may not be done. Obviously, Joker marketing won't get underway until some point in 2019, but the hype train is already speeding along.

Joaquin Phoenix is set to star in Joker as the Clown Prince of Crime, which will tell a unique origin story for the character. The Hangover's Todd Phillips is directing the movie, and is already in the process of doing so, as filming began this week. Thanks to the New York City shoot, there's already been several leaks, so Phillips is trying to stay a step ahead by releasing official looks too.
The perfect example of this is Phillips revealing the first official look at Phoenix in clown make-up as part of a camera test video. Not long after, set videos and photos made their way online that showed Phoenix in full Joker costume. In his latest effort to get official images out, he's now shared a look at Zazie Beetz.

Phillips shared the first official look at Zazie Beetz in Joker on his Instagram today. Based on the previous images, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the image basically looks like a regular photo of Beetz. He's admiring her from afar for now, but his curiosity has definitely piqued.

f there's one thing the world absolutely doesn't need, it's yet another Joker movie. And if there's one thing the world really, really, really doesn't need, it's a Joker movie starring Jared Leto described as a cross between Bad Santa and This Is Us.
DC and Warner Bros. are currently in production of two different Joker movies starring two different actors. There's the Joaquin Phoenix one that is like a gritty origin story, and then there's Leto's, which the writers Glenn Ficarra and John Requa—in what I hope is a hilarious joke—described as such:
“It was sort of like, we wrote ‘Bad Santa’ a couple of years ago, and it was that sensibility mixed with our This Is Us sensibility. We kind of meshed them together. We were doing a relationship movie but with the sensibility of a Bad Santa, f***ed up, mentally deranged people. It was a lot of fun.”
Certainly no one has ever put Bad Santa and This Is Us into the same thought. But it actually makes sense coming from these two, who directed a few episodes of the NBC hit series and also wrote Bad Santa. They also mention that their script begins with Harley Quinn kidnapping Dr. Phil “because her and the Joker are having problems with their relationship.”
There's still a while to go until this movie even begins filming, because Ficarra and Requa explained that the studio wants to lead with Birds of Prey—a female anti-hero squad film starring Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn—and the Joaquin Phoenix Joker movie first.
Birds of Prey sounds promising, given Robbie's stellar performance in Suicide Squad. Or maybe DC will make that one a mix between There Will Be Blood and the Rugrats Movie.
