I really hope this guy can pull this off cause that is a strong cast and dc apparently gave him free rein hope he didn't squander this opportunity

It's already been done technically.

Joker: Robert De Niro Addresses the DC Movie's Scorsese Connection

START QUICK VIEW

Director Tom Phillips' upcoming solo Joker film will follow Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck, an aspiring comedian who has dreams of making it big, but is ultimately doomed to give in to the worst side of himself. Combine that with the fact that Robert De Niro also has a prominent role in the film, and comparisons between Joker and Martin Scorsese's 1982 film The King of Comedy were basically inevitable.

While doing interviews for the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival, De Niro addressed the connection between the two films. He explained that while it certainly isn't a shared universe situation, there is a definite link between Murray Franklin, the talk show host he plays in Joker, and Rupert Pupkin, his character in The King of Comedy. (That being said, he would have been open to properly reprising his classic role, had that been on the table.)

"There's a connection, obviously, with the whole thing," said De Niro. "But it's not as a direct connection as the character I'm playing being Rupert many years later as a host. If they would've proposed that to me, I would've said, 'That's interesting, maybe we'll try to do that.' But by making this type of film, it is connected in a way, as you'll see."

Of course, The King of Comedy isn't the only Robert De Niro-starred Martin Scorsese film that Joker is evoking memories of, as the upcoming character study of the Clown Prince of Crime has apparently also taken its cues from such classics as 1976's Taxi Driver and 1980's Raging Bull. That's no accident either, as Scorsese himself is attached to Joker as an executive producer.

At any rate, it will certainly be interesting to see just how much Murray Franklin channels Rupert Pupkin, not to mention exactly what role he plays in Arthur Fleck's downfall and subsequent transformation into the infamous makeup-clad Batman villain.

Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham. The film arrives in theaters Oct. 4.

Joker Director Calls Theories About the Film Inaccurate

1

Now that the first trailer for Todd Phillips' upcoming Joker film has arrived, the director has opened up a bit more regarding what fans should and shouldn't expect from the Clown Prince of Crime's new origin story.

While speaking about Joker at CinemaCon, Phillips explained it was "still taking shape" and that most of the discussion regarding the film he's seen online up until this point "hasn't been very accurate."

"I guess that's what happens when you set out to do an origin story about a character that doesn't have a definitive origin," he said.

The director also spoke to the film's tone, describing it as a "tragedy." This is a vibe that is definitely given off by the trailer, which provides a look into the woeful life of Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck and his descent into madness as he finds himself a frequent target of Gotham City and its harsh streets.

Seeing as how Phillips believes the online community hasn't quite scratched the surface of where exactly his film will go, it will certainly be interesting for Joker fans to see what this new take on the iconic Batman villain has in store

Joker: Marc Maron Calls Film a 'Character Study of a Mentally Ill Person'

1

The Joker has fascinated comic book readers and cinema lovers for decades. The twisted, unpredictable Clown Prince of Crime makes for a fascinating subject of exploration and fans -- even professional psychologists -- have long attempted to understand him. Now, with the origin story Joker on its way to theaters, fans may get a unique perspective to help them figure the classic villain out.

Marc Maron, who plays Ted Marco in the upcoming film, spoke to New Musical Express about his experience working on Joker. Maron, who admitted to being somewhat apathetic toward superhero films, stated that he was persuaded to get involved with the project after discovering that Joaquin Phoenix was attached to star.

He then compared the film to those from Marvel Studios, suggesting the project was aiming for depth rather than spectacle.

"The approach that Todd Phillips has taken is more of an origin story and a character study of a mentally ill person that becomes The Joker," he said. "It’s more of an intimate and gritty movie with a very specific scope. It’s going to be really interesting to see how it comes out."

Maron also briefly described his experience working with Phoenix, revealing that the actor had evidently remained in character the entire time.

"I didn’t really get to talk to him because he was pretty immersed in The Joker," he recalled. "I was just like, ‘I’m not gonna bother that guy’. That was fine. You just gotta respect people’s process."

Joker is a story about Arthur Fleck, a failed comedian who turns into the psychotic supervillain known as The Joker. According to Warner Bros., the film will be an independent story and will not take place within the continuity of the DC Extended Universe. Several images have emerged, as well as footage from the set of the film, but no further details have been released.

Gladiator and Jaws are the only films that come to mind that were still being written/re-written during principle photography so it’s not impossible to make a good movie under those circumstances but that’s never a good sign.

Could be interesting could be wack we'll see. I do like the fact they are experimenting with these characters outside of canon.

-Johnston said the script was never finished during production: "We shot pages that eventually went into the final script but we didn't have a document".

-Principal photography began on August 30, 2000, at Dillingham Airfield in Mokulēia, Hawaii. Macy, commenting on the slow pace of filming the script, said "we would do a quarter-page–some days, an eighth of a page. And that would be a full 12-hour day." :hmm:

-Production then moved to California; John August was hired to do uncredited work on the script in September 2000.

-Production returned to Hawaii in January 2001 to film the movie's ending, which had not be written at the time of the previous Hawaiian shoot. The ending was filmed on Kauai's Pila'a Beach.

"Really quite happy that the trailer made me want to go and SEE the movie, and didn't tell me about the whole plot start to finish. This isn't a Superhero movie. This is a psychological thriller about DC's best character. We don't have to see CGI models save the world, we get to watch our hero become the villain. The natural successor to Heath Ledger. I can't wait."

I agree and disagree.

I'm all for an origin story. Yes, show us the circumstances that made him say "fuck all of this"

But as far as his motivations AS the Joker (his crimes)...I'm all for keeping him as the irrational, unpredictable psychopath.
