4K is resolute af and plays so on home entertainment TV’s. It’s clean and accurate and while good for certain things, it destroys time period pieces for me.
35mm keeps the grain, keeps the noise and adds that gritty crunch that puts you in that time frame before words are ever said.
Like an analog record on a turntable vs a MP3 streamed from Apple Music or Spotify.
Go back and watch some scenes from Django and see how real it feels vs this one. Incomparable.
This film lacked that feel for me but was great otherwise.
The color grading is terrible, the movie looked like it was filmed on a iphone. How clean everyone was riding on dirt was another issue. The movie had a great cast but I think the weakest link was the director. They should ahve got someone with more experience or worked on a western before.
And edited on Final Cut Pro or something. The saturation was overkill pushing towards an amateur Michael Bay fiasco. Colors were bleeding all throughout the film which apparently was done on purpose to again, “try something different.”
I get it, but with that cast and story, I agree. It deserved someone more experienced in this realm.
But kudos on James for taking a shot at it.

I disagree there. I loved the direction. You also have to take inconsideration that some of that you are complaining about wasn't a mistake. I think they carefully filmed this from the color pallet's to other stuff. Didn't look like it was filmed on a iPhone to me. There's a little grain look I thought they went with to give it a different feel.
Yea, film is always more difficult to edit and master but the final result is well worth it, depending on what you’re going for.
Are you a director or something like that? What is your profession or what do you do? It's been so long since I've listened to an album like a 45 or a 33(yeah, I'm old fuck you lol) that I barely remember the difference although I know an MP3 is clearer
I never had the benefit of enjoying a lost list album or CD in order to grasp that side of it
There was a Clarity of this film that I really enjoyed. Do you think that had it been recorded in a different format that it would have taken away from the clarity?
I now work for an ad agency that specializes in commercials advertising and marketing so I have a background in camera work. I’m not a ultimate pro like brother Gambino on here, who has insider Hollywood knowledge and access to DP’s but I know my way around a camera enough.
I’m all for stepping into the future with new formats and all that but there’s some things that require that added touch and I felt like this film was missing it given it’s time frame. The sets also felt like Hollywood sets before something out in Salinas Texas.
Now I know I’m being overly technical here but I’m a purist at heart and there’s just some feels that digital can’t replicate like analog film/records can.
I don’t think filming or editing in a different format would have taken away from it. Quite the opposite. It would’ve taken this to Django’s level.
I recognized this about the sets as well
Sometimes as a cinephile I'll watch a movie just to look at the background
Something that happens very often and let's play Grand Theft Auto V, They'll have a shitload of buildings that you don't even have the access or ability to go into, but they'll have them there. And this movie they only seemed to build the set for the buildings that you had the ability to go in and I believe they should have built more, if only just to be fronts
So and that mind the set was a bit Bland. It could have been more. It didn't take away from the film as much as it could have added to the film.

Yeah Zazie, although I enjoy the eye candy, seemed off for me in this movie. I feel as if someone else would've rocked this. Maybe BGOLien Honorary HOF and legendary sextape producer Taraji P.H.
But the movie was dope through and through. I always get nervous when you have this much star power (black star power) in a movie. Shout out to Deon Cole holding his own in a drama. LaKeith is a hell of a young actor. Regina King always bringing it. Really enjoyed this movie. Only wish Michael K.W. (RIP) or Boseman (RIP) got a spot.
Yea I agree. I don’t think it was a detriment cause the story and cast overtook that 100%. Any less in those departments and maybe we’d be amplifying it a bit more but I could see past the Hollywood set feel “in town.”
Watching lakeith Stanfield come into his own and control a scene with his confidence and his look in his eyes - let me break it down. When I watch an actor how they perform as if they are in the moment versus when they are in the room (in the room is like in the studio).
When an actor is in the moment, their eyes are smaller more direct on exactly what they're taking in as far as as the set the people on the immediate set on the stage with them
The actors who are in the studio, their eyes don't Focus as well and thus don't show the necessary emotion but it takes to convey the emotion they need for the scene
For example. If you're in a stadium playing football the only thing you should be focused on is the 10 yards to gain, not the hundred yards between the endzone to Endzone
The actors who can convey the 10 yards to gain versus the actors who are focused on the endzone to Endzone that's the difference between actor
I haven't acted since high school, but I understand it's a difficult thing to do. When you're on stage, for many people it is difficult to focus simply on the actors and the props on stage with you. It is so easy to drift back and your eyes take in the enormity of the theater and if you're doing that you are wrong. So wrong
To break it down in football terms. Anyone who's ever played football knows that there is a difference between when the quarterback throws the ball in the ball is high in the air then when the ball is a few feet from you.
There is that wide-eyed look receivers have when the ball is high in the air and the calm eyed look as the ball gets closer
That calm eyed look is what actors need to have to be convincing

While Zazie was arguably the "weakest link" of this great cast. She was definitely competent......but when others appear to be excellent it does take the shine off of her performance....
I don't think Taraji would have definitely been better, but then again I can't name anyone else that I can say would be .....
Imdb score is down to 6.4.....

At the 2-minute and 40-second Mark he speaks about Rex Mills in that Morgan Freeman is Rex Mills (in the casket). That's ironic because and the movie Unforgiven Morgan Freeman was in the casket in front of the store that ended up pissing Clint Eastwood off.

Also we are slowly beating the evil racist white people. On Wednesday, on IMDb The Harder They Fall what's rated 5.2, now it is rated 6.4, so uts climbing. I gave it a 10. Fuck all the bullshit
They always downgrade our shit oh, but this was a real real good movie. It's so good that people on here are nitpicking it and that's a good thing though. Just saying how you would have done it or how you would have shot it, but it was still such a great movie
My only critique comes about 87 minutes into the movie where Lauryn Hill says Nigga in a song. It's the only thing I have a problem with in the entire movie

I was thinking the same thing. It's not that Zazie Beatz wasn't good. She was. But if you start talkin about the top rushers in NFL history you think about Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith. Somebody walks in talking about Fred Taylor. He's Not Top 10, probably not a Hall of Famer, and doesn't compare to the rest of them but he's pretty good in his own right
And honestly, we're just nitpicking. Her intro into the movie was pretty goddamn fantastic, as one of y'all pointed out to me and I could not disagree with the Jim Crow count. I might just watch that part again right now

Man we’ve been torn in the past with a all black cast. Seems like it ends up being great acting but a shitty movie for some reason.
This is the routine now. Anything all Black- especially with principle Black heroes they automatically downgrade it and call it reverse racist, "woke culture", etc etc and rate it 1 out of 10. We need to start doing the same thing to those stupid ass James Bond and their other "white superman" movies.
