Anybody else think T’Challa was the least interesting person in his own film?

1. Killmonger
2. General Okoye
3. Shuri
4. M’Buku
5. Nakia

All more memorable than T’Challa in Black Panther IMO

DEEP

Hit a lot of black Americans who identify with the pain of feeling abandoned by Africa.

All of those characters informed T'Challa on how to rule. It's a nod to the strength of his character that you can let the people around him shine and inform him how to be better at being the badass he already is.

Shoutout to Letitia Wright for killin' in in HOllyweird I've been peeping her since Humans. She did a great job in Black Mirror (Black Museum s04ep06) She really is a budding star.

Nakia wasn't useless. She's his ex-gf. While there is probably a lot more on the cutting room floor explaining WHY she's T'Challa's ex (they probably had to limit what they could explore for time's sake), she served as a motivational "other half" to help T'Challa work through the overwhelming stress that was all happening at once. Marvel was sending the unity message all throughout the movie. T'Challa didn't have to go it alone. He had help. Its kinda the same on Black Lightning. BL deals with his ex a lot because there is still something there. We know BP will eventually end up with Storm (well, maybe not in the MCU but he did in the comics).

I agree that they downplayed his mental prowess. I think that was a political move on Disney's part. I didn't like it either.

There's a scene that was in the script they cut where T'Challa and her run through Wakanda to where she's from and I think see her family. It spoke to the broader idea that he is informed and supported by this vast nation of different types of people. They cut it to save money and for time.

that is a perfect synopsis of his motivations and that scene encapsulated it beautifully. A quick point though....his father didn't judge him, but he did express regret. He said..."look what I've done....I should have taken you there long ago." His pops recognized what next gen him was moving towards and wept....not in judgment, just in sorrow cuz he knows what kind of road that is to go down. He also spoke on them being lost, another point of sorrow, because they are in that apartment because they are cut off from the lineage and the legacy. Its a powerful scene on a lot of levels.

Exactly and like you said not judgement. Guidance. Reflection. Not judgement. N'Jobu blamed himself. How is Erik going to be all good after experiencing that? lol

Point 1. They didn't make him stupid. He was more empowered because he let everyone else around him shine. When Nakia spoke Korean he understood it too. When Shuri explained what she had done, she didn't dumb it down so that he could understand, she explained it the right way because she knew he'd understand. He is a genius in a land of geniuses. The flex is not flexing. Whereas Tony HAS TO LET YOU KNOW how smart he is cause it's all he's got. T'Challa just smirks. Cause he's confident in who he is. This is what a secure person does.

I agree with this but you and I probably both read the comics and/or have some previous knowledge of the character. The movie-going audience would not know this about him. Truth be told, he is a lot like many geniuses in that his demeanor is reserved. It just would have been nice to throw a line or two in that indicated his genius. He didn't have to say "I'm a genius" but something could have been written to give a bit more of an indication as to how superior he really was.
Tony Stark says it not because he has to but because he wants to. He is an arrogant asshole. Like Stephen Strange in his early years. Part of Tony Stark's character flaw is that he's arrogant. Its a constant fuck up that he can't seem to get past.

I can agree with laying it out more but I push back if it you think it makes him look dumb feel me. So they can always do more but also he was no slouch

ok i dont know why i thought killmonger called zuri uncle.
He did. Killmonger called him "Uncle James" when he killed Zuri.
(And he said "Hi Auntie" to Angela Basset.)

Remember when the Flashback to Oakland happens in the beginning of the movie.... N'Jobu is planning some type of mission (or Arms Deal) with his assistant, named "James" (Zuri).

Zuri was his wingman, back then.
So it kinda makes sense that a very young Erik Stevens would probably call him "Unc" when he was a kid.

They not actually related by blood.. but it's a 'hood thing'... like how some black folks call their closest friends 'play cousins'.

We just look at his mental prowess differently. I believe it was a flex by not flexing
The entire world was black he didn't need to prove he was smart imo. He never looked dumb. He never looked dumbfounded by anything. He was just smart enough to let capable people help.
I agree with you. I just think that the general American movie-going audience sometimes needs to be beaten over the head a little with something in order to believe it.
Someone who doesn't know the character would argue his intelligence based on the MCU rather than on the comic books. He never looked dumb or even incapable. He also never looked like a super-genius and I think that was a Disney decision rather than a Marvel decision. There's a lot of room between moron and genius.

they do especially with a black man
but this movie worked to change that because it showed black men and women working together.

There was scene that really disturbed my little girl she clothed her eyes bring her face in my chest...

She couldn't watch the challenge between BP and killmonger

Later on she said she hated seeing two black men fight each other like that

That isn't what Wakanda is about.

She FELT killmonger hate

And she was frustrated that black person could HATE another like that.

My son said something similar. He enjoyed the movie but he didn't like when any of the Africans were fighting the other Africans. Out the mouth of babes. My nephew was upset that the black guy had to die. Some kids should be running tings.

I was confused cause my daughter LIKED that part...I asked why?

She said that 6 strong Black women fighting together could take on a whole army

I just shut up and got her a refill on her icee on the way out.

I hope ya'll realize how f*cking hard it is to play the hero role in a film.

It is EASIER to play a villain...period.

But to do a masterwork like Killmonger is iconic.

But Chadwick Boseman should be applauded over and over

Do NOT mitigate the difficulty and importance and skill this brother has.

As a Mason i saw three scenes that stood out to me that the average movie goers wouldn't even recognize. They actually enacted the third degree ritual three times in that movie. Let's see if anyone can recognize the scenes.

I am not a Mason but the one thing I did notice is how they appeared to use the Mason grip to bring T'Challa and Killmonger out of the Earth after they visited their dead relatives. It reminded me a little of Harim Abiff(a black/moor) being lifted out of the grave.

T'Chaka told T'Challa its hard to be a good king and be a good man from jump.

Nakia was just a factor in the decision.
Killmonger, Nakia and his own beliefs were a factor in him finally doing outreach
He was raised his father's son and his father even told him he had to figure out the kind of king HE was going to be. He was doing it dad's way this is more in line with his way.

I hope Killmonger comes back.

I really hope it doesn't.

Neither actually got the grip and Killmonger didn't even get helped out of the grave. Close though. Very close.

Why you bringing me into this spoiler filled thread when I can't see the movie until it hits BGOL cinema!!??

I don't know. I haven't been to the movie theater in over a decade and I don't have any friends in my immediate circle with white husbands. I know I see black men coupled with white women everywhere else I go, much more than I see black women in the same situation, tho I saw this really cute blk woman/Asian man couple the other day.

I can understand black women having enough respect for your daughter not to put her in the realm of a strange man, though. Women tend to be more sensitive about stuff like that. Also she may not have known how you would react, so it keeps down friction not to include him and risk offending you and causing a scene as some black men have been known to do in response to a "bedwench". God I hate that term.

Ask your boys on here if they are going to a showing with their snow bunny side pieces. If he/she is your choice you go everywhere with them. Or are you saying black women are being true to themselves, and blackmen hiding only pretending? Statistics show y'all date out more. Also, some areas are more welcoming to interracial couples than others.
