social media is gonna be the death of us all

and FIRST when it dropped it was about Joe Budden...

Kobe Bryant was an American professional basketball player, often regarded as one of the greatest to play the sport. Following Kobe’s untimely death, he received the utmost praise from fans, critics, and other players, hence why Drake uses him as a metaphor for success following leaving one’s career.

This may be a reference to Joe Budden who he mentioned in the first verse as following Budden’s critical review of For All The Dogs, Drake responded to him in an Instagram comment in which he described his music career failed while also stating that no one respected or cared that he retired:

You retired and we never hung up your jersey we don’t even remember your number. We know you for doing this… you withdrew from rap not cause you accomplished all you need to it’s cause it wasn’t working for you.
Drake states that following Budden’s retirement, he wasn’t treated with the respect he may have expected due to his rapping skills which he criticized Drake for.
