Cinematography was on point though, and I mean on point. Also loved the new version of Pazuzu. I can see them taking this story further. Never saw the trailer so I went in fresh with no expectations.

The critics savaged this movie and u had really high hopes. But then on the flip side bgol said it was solid

I watched this one this afternoon while at home.

The plot is simple and the film tries to similar to the cult classic “Legion”, but doesn’t hold up to it.

Not much for VFX/SFX. The film pretty much plays out like a B-Movie.

My pet peeve was not seeing Arch Angel Michael and Lucifer go at with each other in their true forms.

The film ended for a potential sequel.

Synopsis

A powerful biotech company has breakthrough technology that allows it to clone history's most influential people. Behind this company is a cabal of Satanists who steal the shroud of Turin, putting them in possession of Jesus Christ's DNA -- the ultimate offering to the devil. Hoping to save mankind, Archangel Michael soon comes to Earth to stop the devil's conspiracy once and for all.

The Marvels

Mediocre Marvels

PRAISE: I guess some execs at Marvel/Disney also found the First Captain Marvel to be to bland and one note like me and decided to take a different approach but does any of it work?
Some of it actually does in this film that brings The Marvels Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel · Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel · Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau together.
They have great chemistry and the writers do a good job of connecting the dots of the three lead characters. They work well together,it was fun seeing them in some of the lighthearted scenes. There's even some clever ways to unify the characters and bring the audience up to date on the characters. I laughed a few times and there are a few action packed and adventurous scenes.
The mid credits scene did give me hope about the future of Marvel films and streaming shows.

PROBLEMS: The odd shifts in tone took me out of the film several times. I remembered how in a couple of the Thor movies the comedic skits were brief in this film they seem endless. A couple of scenes are head scratchers I kept asking why are they doing this ? They might as well do this but they keep it going just to hopefully get some laughs out of some visuals. I have enjoyed Zawe Ashtons performances in the shows The Handmaids Tale and Guerilla but her role in this as the villain Dar-Benn is one note ,absolutely nothing intimidating or interesting about the character. Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury is basically Bosley from Charlie's Angel's in this movie.
Sure I knew from the first trailer this was going to be mainly a comedy but I didn't expect it to be seventy percent sitcom.
I think it's funny how Marvel/Disney suddenly tried to change the marketing for Marvels a few days before it's release with a serious and more reflective trailer because it had already been promoted as a wacky and more joke filled feature months ago. This should have gone straight to Disney+ it would have fit right in with a lot of Marvel shows they offer on there.

Finally got around and watched this last night with my two sons on Disney+

No sense in going into detail being I’m probably the last person on L2H to watch it. I have gotten to the point I ain’t in a rush to watch whatever new stuff comes out.

The movie was entertaining but didn’t hold up to the first film as it tried to ride the coat tails of.

Chukwudi Iwuji did a decent job with the High Evolutionary. I will assume he was basing his interpretation of the current version of the character in todays comics. I haven’t read a comic since the early 90s and his depiction was far different from what I remembered.

The highlight of the film was it going thru the origin of Rocket.

It looks like this film will close out the GOTG as we know it being it showed a new lineup of characters. It looks like the Star Lord character might be getting his own movies/series in the future and the GOTG will just make cameos.

Synopsis

Still reeling from the loss of Gamora, Peter Quill must rally his team to defend the universe and protect one of their own. If the mission is not completely successful, it could possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.

Paris Blues

This was recommended earlier in the thread. Watched this last night in the truck on tubi.

This is a romance film set around the Jazz Scene in Paris, France around the late 1950s.

It’s not a soppy, corny romance film like how they make them today mainly for women. You will enjoy as a Man. Good film to watch with your girl.

Jazz is played thru-out the film with performances from the main characters and others along with cameos of Louis Armstrong and Aaron Bridgers.

Besides the romance part, the film deals with American racism with Sidney and Diahann’s characters. They surprisingly bring up some issues on the subject that doesn’t come off as preachy. And they don’t dwell on it.

The pace of the film runs good from the opening to final scene.

For the Militants, there is interracial shown with BM/WW and WM/BW thru out the film. Nothing sexual is shown.

For the Gay Agenda Trackers, gay/lesbian characters are in the opening scene as the camera scrolls around the nightclub. You have to pay attention to catch it. Nothing sexual is shown.

If you are familiar with French culture, you should not be surprised with LGBT/Interracial being depicted.

For the Thirsty, Diahann Carroll is at the start of her acting career. She looks like a teen girl and is nowhere near her prime.

The film will be on tubi until December 31, 2023. If you are a fan of Jazz culture, this film you will enjoy.

Synopsis

Despite being far from home, American jazz musicians Ram Bowen (Paul Newman) and Eddie Cook (Sidney Poitier) are content living and working in Paris. Ram knows it's the best place for him to develop his musical reputation, and Eddie is far away from the racism that once greeted him on a regular basis. But after meeting and falling in love with American tourists Lillian (Joanne Woodward) and Connie (Diahann Carroll), the pair must decide whether their artistic integrity is worth abandoning.

Watched this one last night in the truck, being it came up in my tubi recommendations.

It’s a comedy/drama that plays out pretty well. While watching it I noticed it had an odd flow and after viewing, I looked it up and saw that it was originally a stage play that ran in NYC and later adapted to a movie.

It’s not LOL funny, but the humor is done well. The film deals with issues of women’s rights, being black and self independence and other issues related to the Black community without being preachy.

Another thing I noticed is the film has a shitload of similarities to later classic black TV sitcoms and films going thru the 1990s. The barbershop scene definitely will make you go “This Seems Familiar”. It’s pretty clear this film has been sampled heavily.

The film is full of recognizable black actors from the era. Legendary DJ Frankie Crocker is in it.

Overall, it’s a good family film to watch with older children. tubi has a clean remastered copy.

Synopsis

Mr. Brooks (Leonard Jackson) is an African-American barbershop owner who runs his household with an iron fist. One day, however, Mrs. Brooks (Clarice Taylor) tires of his stern approach and embraces a nonconformist attitude that's more in line with that of their children, including the philosophical Booker T. (D'Urville Martin) and Gideon (Glynn Turman), a black militant. Soon a battle of wills erupts in the Brooks household, and no one is going to readily back down.

Watched Oppenheimer on Friday evening and thought it was quite good.

Despite the heavy emphasis on dialogue and long running time ... the pacing of the movie was effective, as was the score in ramping up the intensity of some of the scenes.

Didn't care for Matt Damon's role. Just kept seeing "Matt Damon" when he was on-screen.

Florence Pugh has nice titties, as I already knew.

Some really good scenes involving Jason Clarke (many will know him as "Jerry West" on the 2-season Winning Time series).

Good to see Josh Hartnett in a big blockbuster. He's had an interesting career with most of his media attention back in the late-90s or early-00s, and quieter in decades since. He's always got a good screen presence.

Cillian Murphy ... what else can you say? He's always good / great in his projects. And really liked watching his work on Peaky Blinders especially.

Solid performance from Robert Downey Jr too.

She Came to Me

I have to give this movie about people trying to find purpose, love, and understanding plus regain creativity an E for effort for trying to be a little bit of everything. There is enough in this movie that kept me interested and the acting from the cast including Peter Dinklage · Anne Hathaway · Marisa Tomei · Evan Ellison · Harlow Jane · Joanna Kulig · Brian d'Arcy James and Judy Gold give it their all . It just fails to have that perfect balance of comedy and drama. I laughed at how crazy some situations were, I was involved when it became heavily dramatic but I was taken out of the film several times because the switches in tones are very extreme. Very likeable but also lacking at times.

Watched this last night on Paramount+. It’s also on other premium streaming services.

I mainly been going thru my future ex-wife Melanie Lynskey film catalog, so that’s why I watched it.

The film is a ROM/COM but it isn’t soppy lovey dovey. It actually has a dark undertone dealing with the Great Recession and people losing their jobs during that time.

The film also delves into the the business traveler lifestyle in America and gives insights on how they get around the country using their rewards cards and tricks to get around shit.

The film runs at good pace. Comedy is not LOL funny but humorous, a number of insider jokes of the business traveler lifestyle.

Synopsis

An idea from a young, new co-worker (Anna Kendrick) would put an end to the constant travel of corporate downsizer Ryan Bingham (George Clooney), so he takes her on a tour to demonstrate the importance of face-to-face meetings with those they must fire. While mentoring his colleague, he arranges hookups with another frequent-flier (Vera Farmiga), and his developing feelings for the woman prompt him to see others in a new light.

My mom checked out The Holdovers over the weekend.

Asked her what she thought ... she said the performances were credible. Enjoyed it. Her boyfriend not so much - he found it formulaic.

The Holdovers is a 2023 American comedy-drama film directed by Alexander Payne and written by David Hemingson, and stars Paul Giamatti, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, and Dominic Sessa. Set in 1970, its follows a curmudgeonly history teacher at a New England boarding school who is forced to chaperone the handful of students with nowhere to go over Christmas break.

The Holdovers premiered at the 50th Telluride Film Festival on August 31, 2023. It was released in select theaters in the United States on October 27, 2023, followed by a wide release on November 10, by Focus Features. The film received critical acclaim, with particular praise aimed at the lead performances.

Recent upload I watched last night on Netflix.

The film is based off a popular Japanese Magne comic. I have not read it, so I’m not familiar with it and went into this film blind.

Not much to say, the premise has been done a million times since the 1970s. If you have seen a number of 70s Kung-Fu flicks, then you have seen this.

VFX/SFX is basically a step above CW Arrowverse shows. Fight scenes are interesting.

Actor Mark Dacascos co-stars. I’m gonna call it that Disney needs to get this cat either in the MCU or in Star Wars. I definitely can see him as an elder Mandalorian over his own Clan, possibly the Klan Sebrine is connected to. This cat has been underused by Hollywood far too long.

Actress Famke Jansen co-stars, she is still holding up and hasn’t crashed into the wall yet, she too needs to be brought into the MCU or Star Wars soon.

If you looking for something on the level of Ray Bradbury, you ain’t getting it here. If you looking for Mindless entertainment, here you go.

Synopsis

When a headstrong street orphan unwittingly taps into hidden powers, he discovers he might be the only person alive who can protect a reincarnated goddess who was sent to watch over humanity.

The Holdovers

Heartwarming with a capital H

PRAISE : Director Alexander Payne and actor Paul Giamatti team up again for The Holdovers about a New England school instructor who soon forms an unlikely bond with a brainy but damaged troublemaker, and with the school's head cook.
The setting for the movie couldn't be more perfect, the coldness and bleakness of winter is synonymous with what several characters are experiencing or have experienced. Giamatti is great as usual, especially when his character is pushed into a corner and questioned about something, the pitch of his voice rising is not only funny but extremely entertaining and then some. Equally great are Dominic Sessa as Angus Tully and Da’Vine Joy Randolph as Mary Lamb. Both giving strong ,dramatic and amusing performances.
Paynes signature story threads always bring a smile to my face especially when they go down unexpected roads.
I liked how the film focuses for some time on how someone may think that they know all there is to a person: Oh he's just a his way or the highway dictator ,this person is holier than thou or upstanding to a T.
The layers are pulled back on the characters and the back stories on them are amusing, sad and extremely moving.

PROBLEMS: At times some of the turns in the script are a bit to spelled out and predictable
