Stagecoach
1939
8/10
Watched this on MAX last night.
This is the classic John Ford western that pretty much actor John Wayne on the map.
Simple plot that mainly focuses on the passengers on the Stagecoach trying to get thru Apache country.
There is one scene that will have you bustin’ out laughter, it deals with the Banker when he does his rant inside the stagecoach. Listen fully to his rant.
The only action sequence is at the end when the Apache’s catch up with the stagecoach. What is so amazing watching it is it’s all real with stuntmen. No CGI, models or anything went into making the scene. No way in hell will Hollywood do a scene like this, even with Tom Cruise crazy Ass’.
Lots of stereotypical imagery and language with Native Americans and Mexicans, that should not be a surprise for the time period it was made.
MAX has a remastered clean copy.
Synopsis
John Ford's landmark Western revolves around an assorted group of colorful passengers aboard the Overland stagecoach bound for Lordsburg, New Mexico, in the 1880s. An alcoholic philosophizer (Thomas Mitchell), a lady of ill repute (Claire Trevor) and a timid liquor salesman (Donald Meek) are among the motley crew of travelers who must contend with an escaped outlaw, the Ringo Kid (John Wayne), and the ever-present threat of an Apache attack as they make their way across the Wild West.

How They Shot the Carriage Drag Stunt in John Ford's 'Stagecoach'
Here's a look at how the godfather of Hollywood stuntmen, Yakima Canutt, did one of the first in-motion vehicular stunts, for Stagecoach.filmschoolrejects.com
not true....
hollywood still got a few directors that will push the envelope of practical effects and stunts
But there is a lot of CGI or Lucasfilm models involved today.
That scene in Stagecoach, there was no CGI or models used. That was the real shit, especially when that one stuntman dropped under the horses and let the team/coach go right over him.
yes - even in that shot there are methods and visual illusion used for safety
same stunt in Stage Coach was done again n again in other films using horses cars and trucks etc

yes the popular thing today is to cgi - but Nolan and others like Cruise prefer practical
No cgi but they did have camera tricks and techniques to make these stunts look more dangerous than they actually were. But there is a lot of CGI or Lucasfilm models involved today.
