Good Burger 2 has to be the word the movie of the year. Kenan spent all these years trying to distance himself from his Nickelodeon past but I guess his divorce must have wiped him out

I expected more. I liked it, didn't love it. It got slow at times and seems longer than it is. I don't think I've seen a movie where so many people got up to go the bathroom or just to get up and I've seen some long movies lately. Killers of the Flower Moon didn't seem this long nor did as many people get up. It also had weird comedy that sort of throws me off. And visually it's impressive, but the battle you can't really understand who's who and it does this weird black and white thing at times. You just know war is hell and the battles are epic.

At times it's difficult to hear with the accents, well Joaquin doesn't use one strangely. I wonder if it's mixed for TV instead of theaters.

I hear there's almost four hour version that's going to be on Apple TV. I'm interested in seeing that. Some key details were probably edited out. There's so many time jumps and some people just disappear. He wants a heir badly, but once he has one, you never see him again. Wait, you see him once more, then bam. You feel you fell asleep without having fallen asleep. Time jump and then a narration. Plus where they tell you the location, they don't have it on the screen long enough to read because of the damn cursive. And the movie sort of just ends and 2023 Napoleon dead. It's really abrupt. .

Hunger Games, The: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

Good Games

When this prequel was announced all I could think was Money Grab!! Plus it features a character who's fate is already well known but this movie was surprisingly entertaining. The story mainly focuses on Coriolanus Snow (played with good intensity by Tom Blyth),what shaped him and what he had to endure as a young man. Which all happens well partially happens at the time of the Tenth Hunger Games. The cast does well with some definite stand out performances. That being Viola Davis as Head Gamemaker Dr. Volumnia Gaul . She chews up the scenery as a character who is like a cross between a Disney Witch and a G.I Joe Cobra villain. As Lucy Gray Baird Rachel Zegler gets to show off her vocal talents.
I liked the tug of wars the characters had to go through. To rebel or not to rebel, should I choose power over love. I could tell someone in the writing room said turn up the cruelty because some scenes were full of characters being degraded and then some which actually angered and disturbed me.The action sequences were pretty good due to some slick camera work which made them very involving.

PROBLEMS: The movie definitely felt drawn out at times. There's a moment that's supposed to be moving and hugely emotional but it just felt like I was watching an odd version of American Idol.
A few characters were underdeveloped which lead to me not really being invested in them.

Scale of 1 to 10 a 7½

My aunt had a chance to meet him back in the 2000s.

She has worked at some of the downtown venues for decades (Queen Elizabeth, Orpheum, Vancouver Playhouse) ... and was in the lobby one day talking with coworkers. They were preparing for one of the upcoming events. He was in town walking down the street by himself and stopped in to say hello, and shoot the shit with everyone.

Said he was just as funny and quick-witted as you'd hope he'd be.

Just one of those random chance encounters one afternoon.

Rest in peace.

Stagecoach
1939

8/10

Watched this on MAX last night.

This is the classic John Ford western that pretty much actor John Wayne on the map.

Simple plot that mainly focuses on the passengers on the Stagecoach trying to get thru Apache country.

There is one scene that will have you bustin’ out laughter, it deals with the Banker when he does his rant inside the stagecoach. Listen fully to his rant.

The only action sequence is at the end when the Apache’s catch up with the stagecoach. What is so amazing watching it is it’s all real with stuntmen. No CGI, models or anything went into making the scene. No way in hell will Hollywood do a scene like this, even with Tom Cruise crazy Ass’.

Lots of stereotypical imagery and language with Native Americans and Mexicans, that should not be a surprise for the time period it was made.

MAX has a remastered clean copy.

Synopsis

John Ford's landmark Western revolves around an assorted group of colorful passengers aboard the Overland stagecoach bound for Lordsburg, New Mexico, in the 1880s. An alcoholic philosophizer (Thomas Mitchell), a lady of ill repute (Claire Trevor) and a timid liquor salesman (Donald Meek) are among the motley crew of travelers who must contend with an escaped outlaw, the Ringo Kid (John Wayne), and the ever-present threat of an Apache attack as they make their way across the Wild West.

Commented in the Black Sheep thread

No Soulquarians or Ummah involved. No Illa J. No Elzhi or T3. I wonder if all of them feel a way about Dres doing it, considering he didn't actually know Dilla. I mean I liked Dres when I was a kid, now?

but Pos, Jarobi, Pete Rock and some Common

It was cool Lawnge and Dres reunited. Both of them seem to live normal lives.

I think Tony is getting over on Ma Dukes.

It was good though, better than I expected.

But there is a lot of CGI or Lucasfilm models involved today.

That scene in Stagecoach, there was no CGI or models used. That was the real shit, especially when that one stuntman dropped under the horses and let the team/coach go right over him.

yes - even in that shot there are methods and visual illusion used for safety

same stunt in Stage Coach was done again n again in other films using horses cars and trucks etc

Yeah.

But I’m talking about 1939 for when the scene took place. I’m not talking about what they did in later years.

Today we got OSHA safety standards, labor laws and CGI to make it safe. They ain’t have all that shit in 1939. No Hollyweird producer is gonna have people re-enact the below scenes.

Here it is.

I’m referring to sequences that start at the 4:00 min. and 5:20 mark.

Blackberry
2023

7.5/10

This debuted on amc a couple of weeks ago and I watched it this morning.

It’s a movie, but amc had chopped it down to run on 3 nights as a mini-series.

The film does a good job starting off showing the RIM company ( the company that owns Blackberry) with how dysfunctional they were as a startup along with showing how scheming Jim Balsillie was. Following that it goes directly on how with them teaming up it was a perfect combination with RIM’s technical know how and Jim’s hustling techniques.

The film moves at a good pace to get the story straight out there, it isn’t bogged down in the characters emotions, relationships they have with women and other nonsense that usually drags movies like these down.

It’s entertaining from the opening scene to final scene.

Synopsis

Explores the incredible growth and tragic collapse of the world's first smartphone and how it smashed huge enterprises before surrendering to Silicon Valley's fiercely competitive companies.

Romance and Rule

PRAISE: The last time I watched a movie or a series based on the life of Napoleon was 1987's Napoleon and Josephine: A Love Story and it was pretty good.
So of course I was looking forward to this 2023 Napoleon movie with so much talent behind it. Director Ridley Scott, Joaquin Phoenix as Emperor Napoleon and as Empress Josephine Vanessa Kirby.
Even minus an accent Phoenix at times shines in the role and gives it his all. Especially in scenes with Kirby really displaying the volatile relationship between Napoleon and Josephine. Whether it's through insults, affection, their banter and dependence on each other I think they both did very well with those portions of the movie.
There's some dark humor I really enjoyed. The battle sequences are intense and brutal. I respect Scott's direction and the crew behind putting those scenes together.
There are definitely some visuals that were very soul stirring.

PROBLEMS : There are moments when watching Phoenix's performance I felt that he was miscast either he was trying to hard or not enough sometimes feeling like a parody of the historic figure. There's also a disorder to the movie in how things play out. The script is just stating well here's one highlight here and another here,oh and Napoleon did this or that or so on.
Even at a 2 hour and 30 minute run time it really feels like something is missing as certain facts about Napoleons triumphs and defeats are not fully realized . Which makes me look forward to the 4 and a half hour version that's supposed to hit Apple TV. Which I will definitely break up and turn it into a 4 hour and 30 minute series.

Scale of 1 to 10 a 7

No cgi but they did have camera tricks and techniques to make these stunts look more dangerous than they actually were.

Sister Death
2023

6/10

Back in 2017, Netflix released a supernatural suspense film called “Veronica”. The preview looked interesting and I started watching it, I gave up about 5 minutes into it cuz it is in Spanish and Netflix only had it available with subtitles. At the time I was not in the mood to deal with subtitles so I gave up on it.

Just recently, Netflix uploaded this film. It’s a prequel to “Veronica”, so I watched it last night. Netflix has it dubbed in English.

The film has no surprises or scares and the premise has been done before. There is a supernatural entity introduced but no information is given about it.

The film ends from what it looks like going into the opening scene of “Veronica”, I might now give Veronica another chance.

This film looks to have a better plot that could have worked for “The Nun” franchise from my opinion.

Overall, watch if you a hardcore supernatural movie fan.

Synopsis

A novice with supernatural powers arrives at a former convent, now a school for girls. The strange events and disturbing situations that torment her will lead her to unravel the skein of secrets that surround the convent and haunt its inhabitants.

Marooned
1969

6/10

Watched this last night.

This played out pretty well with the story. The film came out at the start of the Apollo Moon missions which is what made it interesting.

It has an all-Star cast of actors which make it legit.

VFX/SFX in space looked hokey, especially since “2001: A Space Odyssey” had debuted a year earlier.

The suspense holds up to the end and it doesn’t have a happy ending.

Synopsis

American astronauts Buzz (Gene Hackman), Jim (Richard Crenna) and Clayton (James Franciscus) are stranded in space on their return journey from a new space station when malfunctioning rocket boosters bring the craft to a halt. With the men drifting in orbit, facing death from declining oxygen levels in the shuttle, NASA director Charles Keith (Gregory Peck) quickly mobilizes to launch a bold rescue mission -- but a hurricane headed for the launch site may ensure the astronauts' demise.
