4.5/10

Been sitting on this one for a year and finally got around watching it last night on Hulu.

Not much to say being the premise has been done a number of times since the 90s.

If you enjoy seeing White Chicks getting what’s coming to them, you will definitely enjoy this flick.

Synopsis

A kidnapped widow is pursued by a cold-blooded killer after she escapes from his remote cabin in the Pacific Northwest.

The Holdovers

Heartwarming with a capital H

PRAISE : Director Alexander Payne and actor Paul Giamatti team up again for The Holdovers about a New England school instructor who soon forms an unlikely bond with a brainy but damaged troublemaker, and with the school's head cook.
The setting for the movie couldn't be more perfect, the coldness and bleakness of winter is synonymous with what several characters are experiencing or have experienced. Giamatti is great as usual, especially when his character is pushed into a corner and questioned about something, the pitch of his voice rising is not only funny but extremely entertaining and then some. Equally great are Dominic Sessa as Angus Tully and Da’Vine Joy Randolph as Mary Lamb. Both giving strong ,dramatic and amusing performances.
Paynes signature story threads always bring a smile to my face especially when they go down unexpected roads.
I liked how the film focuses for some time on how someone may think that they know all there is to a person: Oh he's just a his way or the highway dictator ,this person is holier than thou or upstanding to a T.
The layers are pulled back on the characters and the back stories on them are amusing, sad and extremely moving.

PROBLEMS: At times some of the turns in the script are a bit to spelled out and predictable

Scale of 1 to 10 a 9
This movie was excellent. A throwback drama built on dialogue, slight humor, great story development and a great ending

Maestro

Music Master

PRAISE : Having watched West Side Story multiple times back in the day I was definitely familiar with the music of legendary composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein. Bradley Coopers Maestro is not only a tribute to Bernstein but his wife Felicia Montealegre ,and the music and entertainment of the time periods covered in the movie. I think Cooper and co writer Josh Singer capture Bernsteins love for music, his struggles with being bisexual ,wanting it all and trying to be discreet and protective. Cooper is great as Bernstein really losing himself in and embracing the role. I could really tell he did his homework on Bernstein.
Carey Mulligan turns in a terrific person as Montealegre. The joy and pain of being with Bernstein is written all over her face. In some standout scenes she attempts to ignore certain things going on around her, trying to ignore one particular person as respect for her and her relationship with Bernstein is slowly but surely pushed out of the picture. Her rationalizing over some of Bernsteins actions was well done.
Coopers blending of scenes are done nicely. There's a really great scene that truly shows joy and pain simultaneously happening. I found a lot of dramatic moments to be extremely effective. They really ring true .

PROBLEMS: There is a scene that I wish Cooper had shot differently, made it more up close and personal because it was a build up to what was coming.
Some scenes are overdone. Part of it is in the nineteen forties part of the film. The others are connected to the last thirty minutes of the film, which felt like Oscar bait and then some.

Men
2022

5.5/10

This is a flick I watched last night on Paramount+. It’s labeled as a Sci-Fi/Horror but plays out more like a psychological thriller.

Not much to say about the plot being it mainly revolves around the main characters emotional state.

The film is loaded up with religious metaphors from the Old Testament Book of Genesis. The first hour is a slow burn and the last 20 minutes it gets real odd.

For the Militants, there is interracial with a BM/WW, nothing is shown.

For the Gay Agenda trackers, there is full frontal male nudity. There is also multiple scenes of men giving “birth”, not gonna go into detail but it falls in the category of “What Is Seen Cannot Be Unseen”, viewer discretion is advised.

Watch if you like and enjoy watching content that is different from what is normally out there.

Synopsis

Harper retreats to the countryside to be alone in the wake of a tragedy, but her unease at the town's leering and uncannily similar men grows into a fully fledged nightmare as her arrival awakens something primal in the forest.

It's cool, but not nothing must see at the movies.

Story isn't deep. It seems more like a straight to Netflix movie. Action is cool, but expected more because it's John Woo.

Don't expect a lot of dialogue. One thing I liked was that for a change it actually showed someone getting ready and training, instead of having these natural skills in their DNA.

Jimi Plays Monterey
1986

10/10

This is documentary I saw on MAX the other night.

It plays in full Jimmy Hendrix’s legendary live performance at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival.

The official backstory to his performance was that Jimi and the Who were beefing about who was gonna go on first. The Who won a coin toss and they went out and did their set ending it with them destroying their equipment. Jimi followed and stated he would best them…and he did.

This cat was a beast on that guitar and he came out with his A game in his performance.

This is a must see documentary.

Synopsis

Jimi Hendrix's landmark concert in Monterey County Fairgrounds in California in which he plays signature songs like "Purple Haze," "Foxy Lady," and "Wild Thing."
