Deadtime Stories: Volume 2

4.5/10

Watched this one this evening. I reviewed the first earlier this week in the thread. I only watched it cuz I watched the first.

Like the first, it’s an anthology movie with 3 stories. They are basically reject stories from “Tales From The Darkside”.

Synopsis

Three horror tales depict three friends on a hike become trapped in cave, a strict professor is haunted after a student commits suicide, and a security guard steals a possible cure for cancer to give to his dying wife with disastrous results.

Kevin Hart as an intellectual action hero? Nah. All the shit he talks in his comedy stand-ups about how cowardly he is took away from this movie's credibility. Moreover, the movie wasn't a comedy.

All in all, the movie is just a sub-par heist movie. Typical characters had typical roles, and did typical things. Kevin's role was kind of dry and uninspired.

The movie wasn't complete trash. But I'd only recommend it if you can't find shit else to watch. I'd generously grade it a C-.

Watched this movie the other day. Had meant to check it out way back in the late-2000s just never got around to it. Maggie G is good in all her work. Effective work from Trejo and Esposito in supporting roles. Good non-verbal acting and body language from the actors playing her brother and sister-in-law. Pretty good job by the kid actor too. Challenging role in that she’s called upon to play sad, emotional, indifferent & reconnecting. That’s challenging enough for an actor of any age, lol, for real.

Here is another Melanie Lynskey film I watched tonight on tubi.

It’s a supernatural thriller, more suspense, from New Zealand. For those who don’t know, Melanie is from New Zealand. This film you will hear her speak in her native accent.

This isn’t one of those “Doors Closing/Stuff falling off Shelves” film. It plays out differently with the Entity being introduced early in the film and is interacting with the main character thru-out. Because it plays out differently than other films with the same premise, it stands out.

There isn’t anything for action, blood/gore or VFX/SFX. It’s a small independent film.

For the Thirsty, Melanie Lynskey is made to look like crap for her character.

If you like suspenseful horror and looking for something different, this will do.

Synopsis

A teenage girl and her younger brother stumble upon a sinister old man who brands the boy with a supernatural stamp. The boy begins to fall ill and to save him, she must discover her own magic powers and do battle with a demon.

The Holdovers

Heartwarming with a capital H

PRAISE : Director Alexander Payne and actor Paul Giamatti team up again for The Holdovers about a New England school instructor who soon forms an unlikely bond with a brainy but damaged troublemaker, and with the school's head cook.
The setting for the movie couldn't be more perfect, the coldness and bleakness of winter is synonymous with what several characters are experiencing or have experienced. Giamatti is great as usual, especially when his character is pushed into a corner and questioned about something, the pitch of his voice rising is not only funny but extremely entertaining and then some. Equally great are Dominic Sessa as Angus Tully and Da’Vine Joy Randolph as Mary Lamb. Both giving strong ,dramatic and amusing performances.
Paynes signature story threads always bring a smile to my face especially when they go down unexpected roads.
I liked how the film focuses for some time on how someone may think that they know all there is to a person: Oh he's just a his way or the highway dictator ,this person is holier than thou or upstanding to a T.
The layers are pulled back on the characters and the back stories on them are amusing, sad and extremely moving.

PROBLEMS: At times some of the turns in the script are a bit to spelled out and predictable

Damn. I ain't a fan but I had some guarded high hopes. I like he trying to branch out.

I'm a heist movie fanatic so I know if the LEAD is strong enough? Even the most basic premise could end up a classic in the right hands.

That genre is the most writer director lead dependent. Regardless of budget.

I'll still probably check it out cause like I said I'm a heist fan.

Disappointed but not surprised

PRAISE : This is the type of action flick I will always love, even if the script isn't that great, the one liners are bad and the story about A professional assassin setting aside his peaceful honey-making activities to avenge an exploited friend's death is over the top.
Who wouldn't want to go after the cyber phishing, criminal ,and corny lames that go after the bank accounts and retirement funds of unknowing people. That part of the film definitely appealed to me as the boiler rooms in this movie filled with conceited scammers get whats coming to them as Jason Statham literally wipes the floor with them. The action is intense ,with great fist fights and kills. Praise to the cast including: Emmy Raver-Lampman, Josh Hutcherson, Jeremy Irons, David Witts, Phylicia Rashad, Jemma Redgrave, and Minnie Driver who are able to maintain straight faces throughout all of the mayhem that occurs. There is a standout action sequence that literally almost made me roll out of my seat because of how wonderfully over the top it was. When Irons says his lines so casually with grimness it was a joy to my ears. The movie has that rhythm in its script that I love in movies like this. He's just a beekeeper but he's killed...uhhh how many? He was part of an elite force, hope your life insurance forms are filled out. He's not so tough send in this group.....uhhm well how about this group of killers and so on....

PROBLEMS: Does the movie hit some preposterous levels that made me shake my head ...yes. I wish the movie had maintained the level of crazy entertainment that was offered in the movies fourty two minute mark because after that it becomes the basic video game, I'm going to shoot and kill until I get to the last boss.

Lacking !!

PRAISE: In LIFT Kevin Hart sidelines his usual comedic antics for a not entirely dramatic role as criminal boss Cyrus.
His team of specialized thieves Camila (Úrsula Corberó) is the pilot, Mi-Sun (Yun Jee Kim) is the hacker, Denton (Vincent D’Onofrio) is the master of disguise, Billy Magnussen as the safecracker, Magnus, who “lift” internationally renowned goods well I can say I liked their methods and motivations. Hart plays cute with with ex lover Abby (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), an Interpol agent who recruits him to take on international criminal who funds terrorism (Jean Reno) from getting his hands on $500 million in gold. I did enjoy Harts and Raws scenes together. There are some fun moments and I did laugh a few times. Some of the action sequences are fun, some truly standout towards the end of the film. There's some charm around the edges of the movie.
I do admire Hart for trying to be the straight man for the most part in this movie.

PROBLEMS: Characters are very undeveloped and basic. The team just says a quip or a line here and there and fist bump. A photograph is supposed to explain how loving a character is. I actually felt bad for the actors in the roles they had.One action sequence is beyond ridiculous and it's not because of how it looks its where it's placed. I mean who in their right mind would set up something that could endanger everything and everyone around them.
As soon as some characters sat down to talk I immediately knew how at least three story threads would play out. The CGI was way off in several scenes. Just to generic for me.

I stumbled upon this sometime last year and watched it last night on tubi. It’s somewhat a Christmas film and I had planned to watch it last month but spaced it out.

The primary reason for watching it was cuz Christina Hendricks and Judy Greer co-Star.

The film is a simple comedy/drama. The comedy is not LOL funny but humorous. It has a number of well known actors co-starring who normally don’t do comedy and they do a decent job.

For the Thirsty, Christina and Judy are both covered up from neck to toe, so nothing to see. Christina does wear a costume and those giant milk bags do try to bust thru. Judy has one scene where we get a side profile of her in jeans and surprisingly she got nice apple bottom on her.

Overall, it’s a basic entertaining film. Something to watch to kill time or if you ain’t go shit else to watch.

Synopsis

Maynard, a beloved local businessman, is mistaken for the legendary Bigfoot during an inebriated romp through town in a makeshift gorilla costume.

Lift was very disappointing and mind you the bar was already very low going in.

Frustrating because it actually NEEDED Hart to be funny. Not the usual Hart manic stuff but smart quick charming funny. And I think he COULD have done it.

The script was ass but I would think that cast that director and that lead could have punched it up.

Just frustrating mediocre when all the ingredients were there for something at least okay

One of the Bald Move podcast cohosts said that this movie from the True Detective director is quite good ... I look forward to checking it out at some point in the next month or two.

Issa Laura López Lozano is a Mexican producer, writer and film director. Eleven Spanish language features have been produced from her scripts, four of them directed by herself. She has won several literary awards, including the National Novel Award granted by Mexico's Institute of Fine Arts and Literature in 2007.[1]

In 2017, Tigers Are Not Afraid (Vuelven in Spanish) premiered at Fantastic Fest, in Austin, Texas. Written and directed by López, the film received the Best Horror Director Award, and went on to collect fifty-one awards in film festivals around the world, three Diosas de Plata, including Best Picture and Best Director, and received ten Ariel Awards nominations, of which it won two. The film earned multiple positive reviews by major trades and critics, and a rating of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Currently, López is developing projects with Guillermo del Toro, Noah Hawley and Jason Blum. She directed and co-wrote all episodes of the fourth installment of HBO's TV series True Detective, which will air in January 2024, as True Detective: Night Country.

I watched this one last night. I stumbled upon it a few weeks ago thru the Hulu movie section. It’s crazy with the amount of movies being uploaded on the service.

The film is a conspiracy thriller based around events that took place during WW2. The film takes place in modern times.

The premise of the film has been done a number of times over the decades. This film does a decent job with the suspense to keep you interested in watching to the end.

There isn’t big gunfights, fight sequences, car chases or big explosions. It’s basically a drama. If you suffer from Movie ADHD, you may have some difficulty watching the film because of that.

For the InCells, the main character is a White female. There is a supporting Black female character. They both do things that you might find offensive and disturbing.

Full explanation of the film is given in bits throughout the film and wrappped up in the final scene. The final scene sets it up for a potential sequel.

The film is from Iceland. Characters from Iceland speak their native language with subtitles, all others speak English.

Synopsis

A lawyer is sucked into an international conspiracy after being accused of a murder she didn't commit, and her only chance of survival lies in uncovering the secret of an old German World War II airplane discovered on Iceland's largest glacier.
