Lolita
8.5/10
I just watched this film this afternoon on tubi.
This film is probably ranked in the top 10 controversial films of the 20th Century due to its subject matter. It’s a classic film based off a popular novel.
I looked into it and because of censorship standards of the US Motion Picture Association. they were unable to go as hardcore or even close as to what’s described in the book. Legendary director Stanley Kubrick directed and was involved with the screenplay.
Kubrick did an amazing job of handling the subject with light humor. He also uses a lot of dialogue and imagery/visuals that are not graphic to show how explicit scenes and the story are. The actors performance in some scenes give hints. Kubrick uses signage, like with the name of the girl’s SleepAway camp. He also has actors in the background in a number of scenes doing certain things in a sexual nature, but not explicit or graphic. See if you can spot them.
The book has the girl at 12 years old. Kubrick actually used a 14 year old actress who plays a 14 year old in the role of Lolita. She handles the role perfectly and does a good job for what her character has to do.
For the Foot Fiends, the opening credits roll will blow your mind. Make sure you are alone watching it. There also is a toenail painting scene with Lolita.
For the Pervs, the film has a subtle pervy tone to it in a number of scenes. Nothing is graphic, but if you are a Perv, you will get the references.
For the Thirsty, the actress playing Lolita looks similar to singer Billie Eilish (If Billie Eilish took the time to clean herself up and look like a lady).
Peter Sellers co-stars. There is a couple of scenes he does which clearly shows why Stanley Kubrick got him cast for “Dr. Strangelove” which came out two years later.
tubi has a clean, remastered copy.
Synopsis
With a screenplay penned by the author himself, Stanley Kubrick brings Vladimir Nabokov's controversial tale of forbidden love to the screen. Humbert Humbert (James Mason) is a European professor who relocates to an American suburb, renting a room from lonely widow Charlotte Haze (Shelley Winters). Humbert marries Charlotte, but only to nurture his obsession with her comely teenage daughter, Lolita (Sue Lyon). After Charlotte's sudden death, Humbert has Lolita all to himself -- or does he?
