Wicked little letters on Netflix.

Shortly after WWI, somewhere in the British Isles, someone has been writing crude and vulgar letters and mailing them to a devout Christian woman. Eventually, however, the profanity ridden letters are mailed to most of the people in town.

A curt, foul-mouthed, young Irish mother is suspected of the crime, and jailed. She posts bail, but faces a lengthy prison sentence if convicted. A police woman believes she's innocent, and determines to find the real culprit before the Irish woman is jailed--and torn from her child.

The movie is entertaining. Some of the letters are quite funny. It's a light-hearted comedy, based on a true story, that's something to watch on a boring day. I'd grade it a B-.

Perfect Days

Wonderful movie about the simple things in life

Thanks - had heard and read the strong reviews from critics this past year. Thanks for co-signing.

Perfect Days premiered on 23 May 2023 at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme d'Or and won the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury and the Best Actor Award for Kōji Yakusho. It was nominated for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards, becoming the first film directed by a non-Japanese filmmaker to be nominated as the Japanese entry.[6]

‘Road House’ Director Doug Liman Says ’50 Million People’ Streamed the Film, but ‘I Didn’t Get a Cent. Jake Gyllenhaal Didn’t Get a Cent … That’s Wrong.’

Just watched Gyllenhaal and company in Presumed Innocent (Apple+) - good series. Enjoyed the way it all played out, and watched the original movie from 1990 (Harrison Ford, Raul Julia) a week later.

Watched the tv series Presumed Innocent the past 2 months, followed by the original movie from 1990 this past Tuesday.

Enjoyed them both.

Some stuff worked better for each version. I thought Rusty and Barbara were portrayed well in each. The TV versions of Tommy Molto and Nico Della Guardia were definitely more effective than in the movie. The judge was good in both TV & movie form. Raul Julia was great in the 2nd half of the movie (rest in peace - always enjoyed his acting). Brian Dennehy was good, as per usual. I hadn't seen one of his movies in years.

On the whole I preferred the TV series ... just because the characters were more fully formed than you can do in a mere 2 hours.

I got home last night and watched this one this morning on Paramount+

It’s a Sci-Fi, Thriller. Not much for Sci-Fi other than it takes place on the International Space Station.

The film immediately gets into the main plot shortly after it starts. It manages to hold its pace to the end.

The downside is being the film revolves around highly intelligent, well disciplined characters who are astronauts, it fails to show them go into the “Human Animal” stage when confronted with a situation way above from their training.

Other than that, it’s an interesting and entertaining film. They left it off for a possible sequel.

VFX/SFX are ok.

Synopsis

Tensions flare in the near future aboard the International Space Station when a worldwide conflict breaks out on Earth. Soon, the U.S. and Russian astronauts each receive orders from the ground: take control of the station by any means necessary.

Too Hot To Handle
Playgirl After Dark

I watched this one this morning at home on tubi.

I have been in the process of watching legendary actress Jayne Mansfield films when they become available to watch for free or coke up on movie cable channels.

This film recently debuted on tubi. It’s a crime drama from England. Before watching the film, I looked into it and discovered that when it was released, it was controversial due to the explicit amount of semi-nudity of Jaynes Mansfield and female co-stars with the outfits they had on. The film was released in England uncensored, but was edited/censored in other countries like France and Germany which seemed odd.

It was originally banned in the US cuz of its strict movie censorship standards at the time. Unedited scenes were released in Playboy magazine at the time. The film was heavily edited/censored and some scenes reshot for US release. They used the promo from Playboy to sell the film to American audiences. It was released in the US titled “Playgirl After Dark”.

From what I read so far, the unedited, original version has never been released to American audiences, not even on VHS, DVD or Blu-Ray. I think it has been forgotten over time which is possibly the reason.

It’s a crime drama with a plot that has been done a lot in Hollywood. The film takes place in London’s infamous SoHo district. At the time of this film, it ranked up with NYC Times Square of the 1950s/1960s.

Jayne Mansfield was at her prime when this film was made. She looks identical in the face as her daughter Mariska who stars currently in “Law & Order: SVU” when she first started the series back in the early 2000s. From the neck down, her body proportions are cartoonish on the level of the animated character “Jessica Rabbit”. They point out her body proportions in a number of scenes in the film. The outfits they have her in do a good job of displaying her body.

Christopher Lee co-stars. It’s clear he is at the start of his movie career cuz he is very young looking. The film came out before he got into the British Horror genre that made him a legend. Other familiar British actors from the era also co-star from well known British War films, dramas and Sean Connery “James Bond” films.

Before watching it. I saw it was on tubi and YouTube. tubi has a shitty, un-remastered, colorized version that looks like it was done by a high school AV club nerd. YouTube has the American release original, clean copy B/W version. I debated about which to watch and chose the colorized. I recommend watching the YouTube copy if you do watch it. There are good color versions of the film out there as you can see with the trailer I posted.

Right now, my goal is to find the original uncensored British version. There is no nudity in this film.

How to Make Love to a Woman
2010

4/10

I been going thru Krysten Ritter’s filmography and this film recently popped up on tubi. I watched it this morning at home.

It’s a Romantic Comedy film. Being it’s a Rom-Com, I was expecting it too be soppy sweet like the genre usually has. The film actually steers away from that narrative and has a more male POV style to it which caught my interest within the first 15 minutes into watching it.

The film has a somewhat “Seth Rogan” style vibe to it. It still has the usual scenarios that play out in Rom-Coms. The comedy is not LOL funny, but humorous at some points.

For the Thirsty, Krysten portrays a bubbly, South Cali “Valley Girl” character. She has a couple of sex scenes but nothing is shown. She looks younger from her “Breaking Bad” appearance.

The film co-stars a couple of female porn stars. Jenna Jameson and Jessica Jaymes have small speaking roles. Jenna is shown during the time when she went too far with the facial plastic surgery and is barely recognizable. Jessica looks like her familiar self.

The film is full of recognizable actors were just becoming well known in Hollywood at the time. The film continues thru the end credits roll.

I also noticed while watching this film that tubi did an upgrade. When you FF/REW, you can do it by frames similar to how Netflix does it.
