The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (Extended Edition)
2014

8/10

I reviewed the first 5 films in this franchise earlier in the thread. Me and my sons have been watching them together since this past Spring when I was home. We watched this on MAX this past Wednesday night when I was home.

Not going to go into the plot, but it mainly closes out the story of Bilbo and his adventures from the first 2 films along with some of the supporting characters.

What makes this film stand out is after the first 30+ minutes, the film kicks into full gear with battlefield action for close to 2 hours non-stop. I have never seen a film with that long of an action sequence before. Obviously action must have been added to this extended version cuz I don’t recall it being this long when I saw it in theaters.

The film ends setting it directly to lead into “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” from 2001.

There is supposed to be an animated film debuting this year and a new live action Hobbit film debuting next year.

Looking forward to them.

Synopsis

Having reclaimed Erebor and vast treasure from the dragon Smaug, Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) sacrifices friendship and honor in seeking the Arkenstone, despite Smaug's fiery wrath and desperate attempts by the Hobbit Bilbo (Martin Freeman) to make him see reason. Meanwhile, Sauron sends legions of Orcs in a sneak attack upon the Lonely Mountain. As the fate of Middle Earth hangs in the balance, the races of Men, Elves and Dwarves must decide whether to unite and prevail -- or all die.

A Deadly Adoption
2015

4.5/10

I watched this last night on the road on YouTube. It had come up for whatever reason in my recommendations last month.

The film is basically a satire of the Lifetime Channel’s drama films that they pump out in unlimited numbers. It’s supposed to be a thriller/comedy, the comedy is mainly watching the film expecting Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig to do something crazy. It never happens and just plays out like a predictable Lifetime Channel drama.

Nothing for suspense being everything is predictable with the twists in every scene that comes up. If you are familiar with Lifetime’s films, you pretty much should know what to expect.

Synopsis

Black comedy thriller about a successful couple who take in and care for a six-months-pregnant woman after losing their second, unborn child. They are hoping to be able to adopt the new baby, but taking a total stranger into their house is taking a terrible risk.

Red One

Praise : Red One takes a stab at a modern day take on the mythical Santa Clause in a movie about the head of North Pole security (Dwayne Johnson) teaming up with a notorious hacker (Chris Evans) in order to locate a kidnapped Santa. I did like that this movie displayed what the holidays have become to people just like in the horror movie Thanksgiving. I actually enjoyed J.K. Simmons as Santa for the time he was in the movie. I also liked the villain in the movie witch Gryla (Kiernan Shipka),Shipka has the cold unflinching stare down to a T. I believe I smiled at some of the going ons in the movie a few times. I did like the tech used in the movie and the various creature and character designs.

PROBLEMS: Evans and Johnson basically are the same characters they have portrayed in every other action comedy they have been in. Just looking at the ages of the "kids" at the start of the movie and the fact that was presented to them would upset them made no sense. This is another movie that forgets what was stated two minutes before. With the "Authority" that was placed in the movie it waters down the main plot of the movie. I felt the movie wastes time on something that was supposed to be funny but it ultimately wasn't. The complete change a character makes made no sense. I was never fully involved with the familial threads as the movie wanted me to be.

And Denzel want to go and get these checks.

I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom I can tell you I don't have money, but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now that'll be the end of it ...

Gladiator II

PRAISE: The first Gladiator film is one of my all time favorites. I've always thought it of the movie being on the same level as classics like Spartacus and Ben Hur. The sequel makes some good attempts to be on the same level as Gladiator. I was more than happy that one of the story threads didn't go down a path that would have been completely unbelievable. With that out of the way Director Director Ridley Scott and writer David Scarpa try to keep things interesting in this story about Lucius all grown up and ready to embark on his own journey. Paul Mescal takes on the role of the older Lucius and at times brings the right amount of intensity, humor, and unflinching nerve to the role. Denzel Washington steals every scene that he's in as Macrinus owner of gladiators and he is fun to watch as he grasps for power sometimes viciously as i could see him working things out in his mind as he uses people like chess pieces. Alex Karim is also quite good as Ravi i almost didnt recognize him.The battle scenes, that take place on water and in the coliseum with man vs man and beast are fun even though a bit abrupt. There's blood spilling galore as various gladiators are put through deadly paces. I did laugh at some full on displays of insanity moments.

PROBLEMS: The cast is full of big names including Pedro Pascal and Joseph Quinn, but their characters may have a couple of strong moments they feel underdeveloped. Some other characters i couldn't take seriously or maybe i wasn't supposed to. Familiar and similar beats that are "borrowed" from the first film made this movie feel like a repeat button was being pressed over and over again. A couple of times i found myself asking how is this even possible?
The CGI looked a bit choppy in a few scenes

Unforgiven (1992)

This movie is back on HBO after years of not being on streaming services. Two amazing lines from this movie are so poignantly true and could be played in many areas of life. They could literally be uttered everyday by different people throughout the world:

"Hell of a thing killing a man. You take away everything he's got and everything he's going to have"

"Deserves got nothing to do with it"

Saturday Night
There are some many moments of great nostalgia that brought a smile to my face. I thought the moments between Lorne Michaels portrayed by Gabriel LaBelle and Lorne’s wife Rosie Shuster portrayed by Rachel Sennott really clicked. Praise to the actors portraying the early SNL cast members including : Cory Michael Smith as Chevy Chase · Ella Hunt as Gilda Radner · Dylan O'Brien as Dan Aykroyd and Matt Wood as John Belushi.
