The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (Extended Edition)
2014
8/10
I reviewed the first 5 films in this franchise earlier in the thread. Me and my sons have been watching them together since this past Spring when I was home. We watched this on MAX this past Wednesday night when I was home.
Not going to go into the plot, but it mainly closes out the story of Bilbo and his adventures from the first 2 films along with some of the supporting characters.
What makes this film stand out is after the first 30+ minutes, the film kicks into full gear with battlefield action for close to 2 hours non-stop. I have never seen a film with that long of an action sequence before. Obviously action must have been added to this extended version cuz I don’t recall it being this long when I saw it in theaters.
The film ends setting it directly to lead into “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” from 2001.
There is supposed to be an animated film debuting this year and a new live action Hobbit film debuting next year.
Looking forward to them.
Synopsis
Having reclaimed Erebor and vast treasure from the dragon Smaug, Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) sacrifices friendship and honor in seeking the Arkenstone, despite Smaug's fiery wrath and desperate attempts by the Hobbit Bilbo (Martin Freeman) to make him see reason. Meanwhile, Sauron sends legions of Orcs in a sneak attack upon the Lonely Mountain. As the fate of Middle Earth hangs in the balance, the races of Men, Elves and Dwarves must decide whether to unite and prevail -- or all die.
