It was a smart move long-term for Portland on behalf of small-market teams and basketball in general.

Players can't "take the bag" and go for all the money and choose to be free agents mid-contract. Not good for the sport and terrible for markets like Portland. It is big that Lillard failed.
Spurs a small market team?

Haven't won a championship in almost 10 years and have been one of the leagues worst teams the last five.
How many teams haven't won in 20 + years though ?
Shit the "mecca of basketball" the biggest market, where has that got them?
It takes good management
Even okc has gone to the finals before they fumbled their roster

And some of that losing was intentional for a high pick

You believe they've intentionally been losing the last 5 years to get a pick (that was predictably gifted to them) this past April? :lol:Winning is easy when you have all time great talent. Take that away, folks look sub par. Living in the past only gets you left behind. The Spurs haven't been competitive in the last era or this era of basketball.
