Giancarlo Esposito Reveals He Passed On Loki For A Bigger MCU Role
BYANA DUMARAOG
PUBLISHED 3 HOURS AGO
Giancarlo Esposito admits he passed on appearing in Disney+'s Loki, seemingly in the hopes that he'll get a bigger role on the film side of the MCU.

Giancarlo Esposito opens up about passing on a role in Loki in the hopes that he'd nab a bigger one in the MCU. With a long acting resume, the actor is known for iconic films like Do The Right Thing, Malcolm X, and the Maze Runner franchise. In recent years, however, Esposito has pivoted his focus to TV roles by playing Gus Fring in Breaking Bad and its prequel show, Better Call Saul, as well as assuming the role of Moff Gideon on Disney+'s The Mandalorian.

The actor isn't showing any signs of slowing down. Despite a packed schedule, he's also looking to join the MCU. Esposito has been vocal about wanting to work with Marvel Studios, even recently confirming that he's had talks with Kevin Feige and his team, although he didn't reveal what role it was for. He hasn't shared any specifics about it, or whether or not there's a chance that it's going to pan out anytime soon. Now, however, Esposito shares new information about his discussions with Marvel Studios.

Esposito attended Fan Expo Boston recently and talked more about his meetings with Marvel Studios. As reported by Liam Crowley, the actor said he was offered a role in a Marvel TV show that has already passed. "I think it was Loki," Esposito said, referring to the Disney+ series that aired last year. He didn't elaborate further on this potential Loki role, but Crowley notes that Esposito "alluded to passing on this mystery TV role because he wanted to hold out for a film character."

Esposito's hopes of joining the MCU have been the talk of the town recently as he re-emphasizes his desire to play Professor X. After Disney acquired Fox's TV and movie assets, Marvel Studios regained the rights to the mutants and all their tie-in characters, which means that it's only a matter of time before they are introduced in the MCU. While Esposito didn't reveal who he was supposed to play in Loki, it seems likely it would've been a quick part, perhaps as a variant of Tom Hiddleston's trickster. Nabbing the role of the MCU's Professor X would certainly be bigger. It allows him to be a cornerstone character of the franchise moving forward instead of a potential one-off character in a Disney+ series.

Whether Esposito ultimately gets cast in the MCU as Professor X remains to be seen. Despite the first clear set-up for the mutants' arrival coming in Ms. Marvel, Marvel Studios remains mum about their plans for Charles Xavier and his team. There were hopes that Feige's vision for them would be laid out at San Diego Comic-Con, but that didn't pan out. Perhaps it can happen at D23. In any case, considering Esposito's acting chops, the MCU would be lucky to have him in the franchise. On the flip side, the fact that Marvel Studios apparently offered Esposito a role in Loki means that they are interested in bringing him in. This bodes well for the future.

Two Marvel antiheroes are coming to Disney+ this fall.
At Disney's upfronts presentation in New York on Tuesday, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige took the stage to tease some of Marvel's upcoming projects — and reveal a few release dates. Feige announced that Loki will return for season 2 on Oct. 6, while Echo, the Hawkeye spin-off starring Alaqua Cox, will debut Nov. 29.
Feige also revealed that for the first time, Echo will deviate from other Marvel projects and drop all of its episodes simultaneously. (So far, every other Marvel Disney+ series has streamed new episodes week to week.) Cox reprises her role from Hawkeye as deaf Indigenous hero Maya Lopez, and the show will follow her as she leaves New York City and returns to her hometown. Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio are reportedly reprising their roles as Daredevil and Kingpin.

Meanwhile, Loki marks another Marvel first, as the first show to get a second season. The new season will pick up where the first left off, as Tom Hiddleston's chaotic god travels through space and time. On stage, Feige teased the show's cast — including Owen Wilson, Ke Huy Quan, and Sophia Di Martino — but he made no mention of Kang actor Jonathan Majors, who filmed scenes for Loki season 2 but has been embroiled in controversy since being arrested in March after an alleged domestic dispute.
