“Dollhouse” vet Patton Oswalt will play Agent Eric Koenig in Joss Whedon’s “Agents of SHIELD.”

In the comics, Koenig was a member of Nick Fury’s Howling Commandos during World War II before helping Fury create SHIELD.

Oswalt does not look a lot like the blonde, strapping comic-book Koenig, who first appeared in 1966’s Stan Lee-scripted Sgt. Fury and the Howling Commandos #27.

“When they first told me the character’s name, I’ll admit the first thing I did is I went on Wikipedia and looked up the M.O.D.O.K. character to see if Koenig was maybe his name before he became M.O.D.O.K., but it wasn’t,” Oswalt told the Marvel website. “They keep on talking about the Clairvoyant in the show and I’m like, ‘is that M.O.D.O.K.? Am I M.O.D.O.K.?”

Oswalt says he was a fan of the ABC hourlong before he was asked to join it, but did not lobby for the job.

New episodes of "SHIIELD" return to ABC April 1.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” has recruited yet another special guest star with fan-favorite actor/comedian Patton Oswalt, who will join the cast as Agent Eric Koenig in an upcoming episode of the hit series.

Koenig, who first appeared in SGT. FURY AND HIS HOWLING COMMANDOS #27, was a part of Fury’s original team of World War II soldiers in the comics. Oswalt, perhaps best known for his roles in “King of Queens,” “Ratatouille” and countless other films and TV series, came onto “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” in perhaps the most straightforward way possible—he was simply asked.

“I got a call from my agent saying they want you on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and I said ‘hell, yes,’” recounts the actor. “I’m lucky that I’m visible enough that they wanted to bring me in to play this character. I’d worked with [‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Executive Producer] Joss [Whedon] before on ‘Dollhouse,’ and I guess I wasn’t too annoying and they decided to put me on another one of his shows. So I was very lucky.”
Once he got the part, Oswalt instantly launched into some research—though perhaps not for the reason some might suspect. As a fan of the series, Oswalt has been asking the question many have posed, namely “Who is the Clairvoyant?”

“When they first told me the character’s name, I’ll admit the first thing I did is I went on Wikipedia and looked up the M.O.D.O.K. character to see if Koenig was maybe his name before he became M.O.D.O.K., but it wasn’t,” laughs Oswalt. “They keep on talking about the Clairvoyant in the show and I’m like, ‘is that M.O.D.O.K.? Am I M.O.D.O.K.?”

One thing the actor has always loved about the series even before his guest appearance was how it allowed the creators to explore the more overlooked corners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, corners which are nonetheless very important to the big picture.

“[They’re] a scrappy bunch of agents who are sort of working on the lower tier levels of the Marvel Universe and trying to stop threats before they even get to the Avengers-level threats,” explains the actor. “It’s almost like when you watch ‘The Wire,’ and the guys like Pryzbylewski are just chasing the paper trail but that’s kind of the whole case. That’s where they can bring these guys down, is they’re doing the kind of brutal grunt work. There are these people doing the day to day that keeps the world from spinning into chaos. [They say,] ‘no, we don’t have the shiny Tony Stark, Hawkeye, Black Widow stuff, but we are in it up to our necks and we’re doing it. I really like that. There’s a great sense of camaraderie.”

As the series has progressed and introduced more elements from the Marvel comics such as Deathlok, John Garrett, Sif, Lorelei, or Eric Koenig himself, Oswalt feels the creators have remained incredibly faithful to their source material—and he couldn’t be happier to see one character in particular debut.

“They introduced Agent Garrett, who’s one of my favorite Marvel characters, and I kept asking them on the set, ‘is he going to be an android [like in the comics]?’” says Oswalt. “They’re just like, ‘you’ll have to wait and see.’ They clearly have plans. This is not the mid-‘90s anymore where they just handed comic book properties to anybody, they’re thinking I’m making a comic book [TV series] in this awesome universe and I don’t want to mess it up. And that’s a different motivation than what was happening in the ‘90s, and that’s real cool. I’m glad that changed, that they’re giving them to guys that welcome the tension of, ‘how do I make popular entertainment that still acknowledges this big fanbase that cares about this universe? And if I’m going to change things, can I do it in a way that makes them go oh wow?’”

Oswalt also feels the tone of the series has begun to shift.

“They’re using the Jonathan Hickman model of wheels-within-wheels,” explains Oswalt. “It’s getting into that John Le Carre, ‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’ world now, which creates even more tension because you don’t know, is someone lying to me, and are they doing me a favor by lying to me? That’s really great stuff to play as an actor.”
When Oswalt walked onto the soundstages for “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” one thing in particular impressed him instantly.

“For a TV show, the practical sets that they built are more elaborate and more of a 360 sandbox environment than a lot of movie sets that I’ve been on, and that really blew me away,” recalls the actor. “You could do almost West Wing walk and talk sequences on set. I was like, this is the set for a very brief arc of the show, and the level of detail that went into it was pretty stunning.”

Finally, as a fan of not only the series but all things Marvel, Oswalt’s experience on the show did have one slightly bittersweet component to it.

“When you’re in something, now you know what’s coming. A big part of me is still a big consumer of this stuff. I have friends now that write some of the comics, and they’ll send me issues, [but] I like having to wait until every Wednesday and get it once a month. That’s sort of part of the story for me. It’s that push-pull of, I want to know stuff now, but I also like the waiting is part of the fun. [Marvel’s] doing so much stuff [though], and now with the Netflix [deal], there’s always going to be enough to wait for and rub my hands together for. That will never be a problem.”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Easter Eggs and Marvel Comics References in “The End of the Beginning”

Lemurians-e1396410412451.jpg

Headed to “The Lemurian Star”
The Lemurians are a branch of homo mermanus that migrated to the Pacific Ocean and settled in the ruins of ancient Lemuria. Currently ruled by Karthon the Questor, they have greenish, scaly skin (although it sometimes looks blue, as above, potentially raising some interesting questions on S.H.I.E.L.D.).
That they get a mention at all is interesting; I would have thought their rights were tied up with Namor who, at least count, was still with Universal Pictures. Could Marvel have quietly reacquired those rights?

Sitwell’s got a boat to catch
That would be the boat he’s on at the start of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, where he (among others) is being held hostage by Batroc the Leaper and Captain America, Crossbones, Black Widow and their backup have to parachute on board to protect their allies and assets.
You can check that out below.

He killed my partner, Dan Monroe
This is a long shot, but given the importance of Captain America’s partner Bucky Barnes in this story, what are the odds that Dan Monroe is related to Jack Monroe, better known as Nomad, who was briefly Captain America’s partner? Don’t seem bad…

Candidates
Who are the candidates to be The Clairvoyant/ Well, both Elijah Fordham and Thomas Nash are based on historical figures but have no analog in the Marvel Universe.

Noriko Sato is an interesting one because there are a couple of Norikos in the Marvel Universe, including one (Noriko Nagayoshi) who works with S.H.I.E.L.D.

Turn, Turn, Turn
Hey, look! Next week’s episode gets a title drop!

In fact, so did the series title, later in the episode, but the “Turn, turn, turn” line from Garrett is interesting. It’s not just the name of the episode but there’s an implication in that title about a turncoat or traitor.

While they go to great lengths to make us think it’s May here, I don’t buy it. I think she’s been working with Fury and doesn’t trust anyone, hence the “no contact,” no admission rules. Who might actually BE a traitor? Well, I think it’s pretty obvious this week…but more on that later.

Oh my God! He killed Blake! That bast–(No he really didn’t)
Blake is hardly a nice guy, but he’s been around the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a spell. First appearing in Item 47, he has appeared in some Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episodes too and is one of only a few named S.H.I.E.L.D. agents recurring and not on Coulson’s team.

shield-vs-deathlok-e1396212114748.jpg

Multi-spectrum overlay
When Skye orders the “multi-spectrum overlay” on her observation of Deathlok, we see…well, Deathlok. There’s been a good deal of grumbling on the part of fans that J. August Richards looks more like a kid in a Lazer Tag outfit than a powerful government cyborg…but when you look at him in this light?

Holy cow! He kinda looks like…Deathlok!

The Fridge
Metahuman prison from the comics and already previously referenced on S.H.I.E.L.D.
That’s where Garrett was supposed to take Ian Quinn until Coulson hijacked the prisoner a few weeks ago.

Hand is a traitor? Well, color me surprised!
Looks like it’s H.A.M.M.E.R. time, folks!

…Oof. Did I just say that out loud?

Fans of the comics know that Hand was a S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent who worked under Norman Osborn and ultimately defected against S.H.I.E.L.D. in favor of the more proactive and morally gray S.W.O.R.D. and H.A.M.M.E.R. iterations of the organization.

Post-credits tag
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is officially not the first appearance of The Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe if you live in the United States. Weird.

That’s because we see him (and Nick Fury, who’s already made one Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. appearance this season) in the post-credits tag, which is actually jsut footage from the new Captain America sequel out on Friday.

Prior to the new episodes it was more X-files than anything. Going around finding strange items was already boring.

Now with some villains it has been good.

and adding to the cast...

another plus regular humans living in a world of gods, miracles and monsters...

how to deal with that.

They need to keep that at the core.

I been watching this show from the jump. The show started slow to introduce the characters, but once that was done it was going deep down the rabbit hole in the marvel universe. The show will only get better with the rest of this season and the next one.

calling it..in either the next episode or the season finale Skye will convince Ward that he's been with SHIELD all along, thus revealing he actually a "triple" agent

then again Ward and Coulson must be setting something up,hinted at by that glance they exchanged before the end

I knew this would happen. From the beginning I knew AoS would be a set up for the movies, a tie in. We have to get that introduction but they been 'finding' Hydra like things all season. I was just thinking that Hydra would show up in Thor:TDW...had to wait until Cap.

Folks been sleeping on this. Calling it cheesy. I laugh. Like any good story you gotta get the players down first. This shit so deep, LOL. So many questions!
