As I saw it as this guy kept screwing his daughter over time and time again. Even though I get the presumed cause of him going to the games in the end but yet again he is leaving his daughter hanging and may not survive. He was irresponsible in the beginning at 47 years old with child you still that much of fuck up. Lack luster on your word, making her promises he doesn't keep. During that year I get he may have been grieving yet when you have child at some point quicker then a year you have to try your best to manage and balance your grief and still show up for your kid(s). Then when you settle yourself, gave money away and situated to do right by your child. You skip out on her. However big his cause is his daughter stayed getting the short end of the stick.
Great breakdown.... It has me curious I've seen a lot of shows on Netflix which the voice translation and the sub title translation are very different. So I wonder what methods are used for each. Has that part came up in any of these discussions on this?

through mental illness, aka depression, feeling helpless,
watching another man take care of his daughter..
then when he saw an opportunity to make enough money
to solve his problems... he dove into that shit..
