The arc is actually an invisible barrier(only when the defensive player is planted there first) that an offensive player has to go around to score the basket, specifically when a guard and center is involved it's more pronounce...... Otherwise, it's too easy to score at the basketball when center drives the ball and a guard is at the basket....

Offensive player drives to the basket. Kicks the ball out and takes one or two steps and an asshole defensive player is standing still like he’s frozen in the paint.
