Just finished this miniseries. Started it in late-July, then returned to it this past week.

The actual news story / case got lots of TV and newspaper coverage here on the westcoast in the late-90s. I thought overall it was pretty good. Well-acted by the young cast especially. They were age-appropriate and believable. My mom had a chance to check it out as well, as the story had a personal significance to her having worked as a psych nurse in juvenile detention for a number of years. She was able to see / witness Kelly Ellard first-hand (one of the killers), and also followed updates on the late Reena Virk's family in the years to follow. Some viewers will recognize Javon Walton from Euphoria, as he plays the role of Warren Glowatski.

Under the Bridge is an American true crime drama television miniseries developed by Quinn Shephard that is based upon the book of the same name by Rebecca Godfrey. The series premiered on Hulu on April 17, 2024.[1]

It follows the murder of Reena Virk, as a writer enters the hidden world of the accused killers.

I watched this weekly and it was so good, all of the young cast killed their roles in this. I liked the music was accurate to the time like Spice 1's 187 he wrote. I can imagine how much noise this case made at the time tho given that this was Victoria and not Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Winnipeg, etc.

Agreed. Really thought the young cast did well here. Hell, even the lead playing the late Reena was 12 at the time of filming (playing 14). Impressive. I only knew the one actor who played Warren, as he was on Euphoria.

My mom noted seeing some of the sociopathic tendencies from Kelly Ellard while she was in youth custody / juvenile detention. It was interesting seeing her playing the background role here for a number of episodes to what looked like Josephine Bell being the ringleader of sorts ... but in fact in the final 3 or 4 episodes you really saw her dark side. I was thinking about what my mom was telling me back in the late-90s regarding same.

Yes - the styles of clothing, music choices ... all very accurate, it seemed. I remember graduating from HS in 1997 and seeing many of those styles around the time.

Lots of daily news coverage re: the case here on the westcoast ... yeah ... especially with the headlines being girl on girl violence, which was much less common place at that time.

Though thinking back ... I definitely recall some grade school through high school girl violence incidents. Knew some girls who got suspended and expelled for group attacks.

Girls can be vicious when they want to be, for sure. It's not all emotional and psychological bullying with them ...

The murder of Reena Virk inspired a monologue play, The Shape of a Girl (2001), by Joan MacLeod,[30] and The Beckoners by Carrie Mac.[citation needed]

The case was also the subject of a thesis published in a 2004 book, titled Girls' Violence; Myths and Realities.[31] Sheila Batacharya, the author of the thesis "Racism, 'Girl Violence' and the Murder of Reena Virk", discusses the case from a feminist perspective and examines why the argument from media and the police that the murder was not racially motivated may not have been entirely accurate. Batacharya also argues that the narrative of "girl violence", which academics, policymakers, and journalists have asserted is evidenced by Virk's murder, obscures other investigations and explanations surrounding this murder.[32]

The case was the subject of the 2005 book Under the Bridge: The True Story of the Murder of Reena Virk by Rebecca Godfrey.[19] In 2007, it was announced that Reese Witherspoon had acquired film rights for the book, with plans to adapt it into a movie with her production company, Type A Films.[33] In 2010, filming for the movie was said to begin in 2011, but the project stalled in development.[34]

Reena's father, Mr. Manjit Virk, wrote a book about the murder of his daughter: Reena: A Father’s Story (2008),[35] which is highly critical of the B.C. Ministry of Children and Family Development and the B.C. justice system; Reena was murdered under the voluntary care of the Ministry, yet no apology was given or responsibility taken.[36]

In December 2010 and 2012, students from Walkerville High School in Windsor, Ontario, performed a play based on the death of Reena Virk for members of the community, as well as the Virk parents.[37]

In 2015, Soraya Peerbaye published a series of poems dedicated to the murder of Reena Virk entitled Tell: poems for a girlhood. The book was shortlisted for the 2016 Griffin Poetry Prize.[38]

In 2022, filmmaker Quinn Sheppard was announced to be adapting Rebecca Godfrey's book into a TV miniseries.[39] The series Under the Bridge premiered on Hulu on April 17, 2024. Reena Virk was portrayed by Vritika Gupta, with Riley Keough starring as Godfrey.[8] The miniseries ran for eight episodes, from April 17 to May 29, 2024.[2]

The Ashley Madison Affair

One last thing about this docuseries. You have people like Sunny Hostin grinning and laughing about the hits the founder of AM Noel Bierman took but in the end he's a millionaire living a life of leisure in Canada so he won IMO

Yeah I only knew Javon Walton before watching this show as well. Yeah they def portrayed Josephine as the head earlier on but started seeing signs of Kelly being the real sociopath starting from the scene of her being the 1 to use the knife during their CMC blood oath. Even the eps showing the backstory of Reena's parents were good, really could see how Reena felt to be an outsider even more with them being Jehovah's witness on top of her ethnic background in Victoria

Agreed - very effective with Kelly being the sociopath lurking in the background, and emerging later on.

I enjoyed the back story for the parents & uncle as well. My mom said she appreciated how much the Virk parents were visible in the years to follow ... ensuring their daughter's name wasn't forgotten, but all the while being compassionate after facing immense tragedy. Similar to the news story which was huge locally re: Amanda Todd (see link below) and how her mother Carol has made it her life's mission re: anti-bullying initiatives, etc.

Side note ... see the interview below with the actress who played Josephine Bell. Pleasant and mature. Shows how good of an acting job she did on the series ... very convincing as cold / heartless.

Good job by the actress playing Reena too considering she was only 12yo (playing a 14yo).

Also was interesting that Kelly was the 1 that actually came from a privileged background being way worse than the girls that actually lived in the group home

Exactly ... and her parents undoubtedly having more access to legal resources.

Hell - it's hard keeping track of the legal timeline in the years to follow ... see below ...

The youths trap Reena at the phone booth and then take her under the Craigflower Bridge, proceeding to swarm beat her and then walk away. Virk then left the bridge and walked away when she is followed and attacked by Kelly and Warren who smashed her head against a tree, knocking her unconscious and then dragging her body into the Gorge Waterway where she drowned.

  • February 4, 2003 – The BC Court of Appeal announces that due to improprieties in the way Ellard was questioned during her first trial, a new trial would be ordered.[20] It is impermissible for the Crown to ask the accused why witnesses would lie about the accused.[21]
  • June 14, 2004 – Ellard's second trial begins.
  • July 18, 2004 – A mistrial is declared in Ellard's second trial after the jury declares it is deadlocked 11 to 1.[22]

  • July 20, 2006 – After serving just under nine years of a life sentence, Glowatski is granted unescorted temporary passes by the National Parole Board. The Virk family supports the decision.[11]
  • August 9, 2006 – Ellard appeals her conviction, asking for a fourth trial or an acquittal. The Crown has the option to appeal, hold a fourth trial or abandon prosecution.[25][26]
