Broncos LB Brandon Marshall: 'We have long way to go as people
Denver Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall said he is taken aback by the subdued reaction to the fatal shooting of an unarmed African-American man by Tulsa, Oklahoma, police compared to the outrage over NFL players' demonstrations during the national anthem.
"One thing I have an issue with is people are really, extremely [ticked] off and mad about us kneeling and protesting peacefully. How come they don't have that same type of anger toward the situations that are going on? I think everybody needs to check themselves," he told The Denver Post on Tuesday.
Marshall made his comments while at a local elementary school, where he addressed students about the importance of attending school. He was asked by the newspaper about the shooting of 40-year-old Terence Crutcher in Tulsa last week.
Police video shows Crutcher walking away from the officers and toward his SUV last Friday with his hands in the air. He then approaches the driver's side of his vehicle, where an officer shocks him with a stun gun and another fatally shoots him.
Officers had been called to the scene to respond to a report of a stalled vehicle. The officer who shot Crutcher, Betty Shelby, was placed on paid leave.
Marshall has knelt during the national anthem during each of the Broncos' first two games and has lost two local sponsorship deals as a result of his actions. He met with Denver Police Chief Robert White last week.
"It just lets me know that we have a long way to go as people," Marshall told the newspaper. "I don't want to go as far as to say people care more about the flag than their fellow man, but it seems like it."
Several NFL players took to Twitter on Tuesday to react to the Crutcher situation.

Might as well clear the air before the news does it for me. I got a red light ticket in july, and a speeding ticket in August of 2015. Never been arrested. I also stole some baseball cards from a hardware when I was 12.

ROKEN ARROW — Police in Broken Arrow arrested a man accused of hitting his wife and threatening to kill her after a standoff lasting several hours early Wednesday.
Officers responded to a reported domestic disturbance in the 6300 block of South 116th East Avenue around 9 p.m. Tuesday and spoke with a woman who said her husband assaulted her.
The woman told police she had arrived home with her brother earlier in the evening and began arguing with her husband, identified as 41-year-old Jack Campbell, Cpl. Leon Calhoun stated in a news release. She said the altercation escalated when Campbell struck her and tried to choke her.
At one point, the woman reportedly told police, her husband grabbed a handgun and knife and threatened to harm her with the weapons. She and her brother eventually were able to escape the home and call police, Calhoun said.
Paramedics treated the woman at the scene for minor injuries resulting from the alleged assault. Police also were told the man had made statements that he would harm any officers who show up at his home.
Calhoun said police arrived at Campbell's house and made several unsuccessful attempts to communicate with the man.
Around 1:30 a.m., officers breached the home through a window, allowing them to speak with Campbell and convince him to surrender without further incident, Calhoun said.
Campbell was booked into the Broken Arrow Jail on initial complaints of domestic assault and battery by strangulation and assault with a deadly weapon. He likely will be transferred to the Tulsa Jail later in the day.
