By the mid 1920s, the hate group had spread to every U.S. state, as well as to Alaska, which wouldn't gain statehood until 1959. In the early 1930s, two so-called klaverns, or Klan chapters, were established in the U.S.-controlled Panama Canal Zone.
By the early 1940s, Oklahoma was home to 102 klaverns. Three were established in the modern-day Oklahoma City metro area: one in Oklahoma City, another in El Reno and a third in the now-defunct town of Britton.
John Kneebone, history department chairman at Virginia Commonwealth, said the map is designed to show the viewer that the Klan wasn't strictly a southern phenomenon.
“Everywhere there was population, there was the Klan,” Kneebone said. “Think about being a young person — black or Jewish or Catholic — and growing up, knowing that these were everywhere.”
Although the second Ku Klux Klan declined in the 1940s, the group experienced a resurgence in the 1950s and 1960s, and it continues to have a presence in Oklahoma today. The Southern Poverty Law Centerrecognized 10 Klan-affiliated groups last year in Oklahoma.
