this is whats fucked up..the use of BEEFS and BATTLES as if theyre interchangable..

A RAP BATTLE is two or more MCs challenging each others skills on the mic and ability to rock a crowd..theres no animosity to it.

A BEEF is personal and is steeped in anger and hatred. It has nothing to do with whos a better MC or skill its just pure animosity thats taken to wax.

they are NOT interchangeable..one is not like the other.

and this LAZY INTERPRETATION for the last 35 years has seriously undermined hip hop culture.
Bingo!!

*ahem*

“Maybe I should have just left it alone. Even though my impetus was the ‘Control’ verse,” he said in the video. “I mean you put yourself out there like that. So, you opened yourself up to critique…I apologize for even engaging and talking about n----- careers, I’ll never do that s--- again.”

Most controversial opinion of all...

Hip hop is alive and well. Rap music is just as good now as it's ever been. Maybe better!

So why doesn't it seem that way?

Part of it is selection bias. When we listen to our golden years music we play the classics and ignore the crap. With modern music you get both. Whenever you compare the best of one era to the entirety of another the latter will always seem worse.

Part of it is nostalgia. The songs we heard when we graduated high school, attended college, got our driver's license, first apartment, or our first sip of alcohol become the soundtrack for the rest of our lives. This is why most music is aimed at people aged 16 to 24. The further you are from that demo the less relatable it becomes.

That's also the age where people assert their identity by rebelling against the older generation. Part of that rebellion includes purposely making and listening to music that we hate.

Folks our age talk endlessly about how today's music has been corrupted or co-opted. How artists don't have the same talent that they used to. The bar to entry is too low. The youth are brainwashed, etc.

However, grab an old Source or XXL magazine from the 90s or 2000s and you'll see hip hop's elder statesmen make the same complaints about the music we listened to. We get mad when rappers say "fuck Pac", but how many of our heroes did a track with Melle Mel?

This negative perception of today's music is nothing more than a symptom of a generation gap. Let's stop fighting our kids and embrace them for who they are.

True, but so what?

Deep thinking and social commentary can be exhausting. Sometimes you need an artist who has nothing to say.

Speaking of Drake, how come nobody ever credits him being one of the first mainstream rappers to incorporate afrobeat?

Didn't Wale do it first?

If not?

Then I think they do... remember they tried to call it tropical house or whatever around the time Beiber jumped on that wave too.

And also Drake detractors don't like how he jumps on a wave very early on and promotes it.

I never had an issue with it

*rehashing all this all sh*t doesnt help or add depth or context.

Because all these sources are unreliable and their intent is not to educate or to heal

but to get attetion, money and reignite bullsh*t.

We need to stop supporting any platforms that thrive in doing that stuff.

sidebar...

Latifah right about something else - a lot of foul stuff happened during battles back and the day

that don't make it right.

Please don't forget that Pac dissed Mobb Deep and went on a sickle cell rant only to later find out they NEVER dissed him personally. His crew the Outlawz told him Prodigy had a line mentioning thug life and they FELT they were dissing Pac. Which was NOT true.

HE also had to talk to Tribe and NAs etc

Miscommunication misunderstanding that could have potentially lead to serious consequences squashed over one conversation.

Point being just became we did dumb shit back in the day doesn't mean we should CONTINUE it now.

It's funny, how nobody said a thing when Drake dissed Rihanna and Esperanza Spalding,a few years ago. Let that sink in,he dissed Esperanza Spalding,a few years ago. She mostly does jazz music yet Drake dissed her just because she won "Best New Artist' over him almost ten years prior....

Rap battling have been there since the beginning of rap music but you have folks are trying to change the rules. Nobody said a thing when Tupac talked about fucking another man's wife.
