Bernard Cribbins, Doctor Who actor, dies at 93

The British star's credits include the classic film The Railway Children and sitcom Fawlty Towers.

Doctor Who cast member and beloved British entertainer Bernard Cribbins has died at the age of 93. The actor's many film credits include The Railway Children and the Alfred Hitchcock-directed Frenzy as well as the classic sitcom Fawlty Towers.
Cribbins' passing was confirmed to EW by his agent.

The actor first joined the world of Doctor Who when he appeared in the 1966 film Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. Following the sci-fi franchise's 2005 revival on the small screen, Cribbins acquired a new generation of fans for his portrayal of the character Wilfred Mott.
In addition to his career as an actor, Cribbins scored U.K. hits in the '60s with the singles "The Hole in the Ground" and "Right Said Fred." In the '70s, he narrated the British TV show The Wombles.

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies has paid tribute to Cribbins on Instagram.

"I love this man. I love him," Davies wrote, alongside a photograph of the actor playing the character of Snout in A Midsummer Night's Dream. "He loved being in Doctor Who. He said, 'Children are calling me grandad in the street!' His first day was on location with Kylie Minogue, but all eyes, even Kylie's, were on Bernard. He'd turned up with a suitcase full of props, just in case, including a rubber chicken. And what an actor. Oh, really though, what a wonderful actor. We once took him to the TV Choice Awards and sent him up on his own to collect the award, and the entire room stood up and cheered him. That's a lovely memory. He'd phone up and say, 'I've got an idea! What if I attack a Dalek with a paintball gun?!' Okay, Bernard, in it went!... Thanks for everything, my old soldier. A legend has left the world."

Doctor Who's David Tennant Teases More 60th Anniversary Surprises That Fans Don't Know About Yet
By Mick Joest published 36 minutes ago
The star had some exciting news to share.

Doctor Who’s creative team is continuing to work on the upcoming 60th Anniversary celebration, with fans already knowing only a bit of what to expect. Fans were over the moon to hear former Doctor David Tennant will return alongside Catherine Tennant for a new adventure, and that Neil Patrick Harris is playing a mysterious villain. Some, however, are a bit miffed that we're hearing about all of these big reveals well ahead of the special's debut, but David Tennant attempted to put some of those fears to rest while speaking at a recent event.

David Tennant took the stage at Fan Expo Boston to answer fan questions, and he talked briefly during his panel about returning to Doctor Who for the beloved sci-fi staple's 60th anniversary. Tennant mentioned that the franchise necessarily needed to announce his return early due to filming taking place in very public locations, but teased that there are still plenty of surprises in store for fans beyond what we know already, saying:

We were slightly unfortunate, or fortunate in that we were filming some scenes that were in the public. So, it had to be admitted that we were in it. Most of what’s been filmed with other people has all been inside. So, there’s lots more coming than people think, which is exciting.

It is exciting to hear that there are more surprises planned that took place in locations outside of the public filming spots. This might explain why fans have seen beloved actors like the late Bernard Cribbins on set, but we haven’t heard about or seen footage of incoming Doctor Ncuti Gatwa yet. It was recently reported Gatwa isn’t scheduled to start filming for his upcoming season until November, but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t have had a short scene in the 60th as well.

This news should give hope to fans who are hoping to see other Doctors in the adventure, such as Peter Capaldi, Matt Smith, or even Christopher Eccleston. There’s also a chance we’ll see former companion actors like Karen Gillan or Jenna Coleman, it really feels like the sky is the limit following David Tennant’s latest remarks.

David Tennant continued on and teased the FanExpo attendees about what’s in store for the 60th-anniversary celebration. The actor briefly touched on the confusion surrounding his reprisal as The Doctor, and how he’s back together with Donna Noble after their last encounter:

Nobody has quite figured out yet what Catherine and I are doing there. I think there’s a lot of theory, a lot of speculation. I’m very excited for people to see the tiny little cog that we are in Russell’s great machine.

There have been plenty of rumors surrounding the plans for Doctor Who’s future every since the show announced Russell T. Davies’ return, such as the hypothetical idea that the franchise will lean into creating a multiverse for its characters, providing opportunities to create new adventures. Some think David Tennant’s Doctor and Donna Noble returning means they're from another universe, but as Tennant hinted at, that idea is but one of many speculative avenues that fans have been paving ahead of the characters' return. Hopefully, all these surprises will be as satisfying as fans hope, and we’ll enjoy celebrate Doctor Who in the best ways in 2023.

Doctor Who will return in the fall with Jodie Whittaker’s final episode, but fans can watch everything leading up to it right now provided they have an HBO Max Subscription. It's always a great time to revisit David Tennant and Catherine Tate’s episodes, especially if we'll be waiting until closer to the special's airdate to hear about more returning characters.

Damn. I've been misled before, but this looks pretty solid. I hope they can give Jodie a proper sendoff, so people can remember that and not all of the gripes they had about her run.
Jodie is a good actor but they didn't give her anything to work with, the writing and directing really let her down. Hope her send off is good but ultimately I'm just glad the chibnal era is over.

The same thing happened with Capaldi early on. They spent so much time trying to apologize for him being older and not Matt Smith that it got annoying. Thankfully, they let all of that go, and it made the end of his run really shine.

Agreed, he had a Shakey start but capaldi found his footing at the end and just as it was really getting good his run was up. I also think he suffered from people being tired of Clara at that point, it really helped him getting a new companion.

Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker is WhatsApping replacement Ncuti Gatwa 'loads'

"I just think it's the most exciting casting."
By Clark CollisOctober 20, 2022 at 02:11 PM EDT

You could fill a TARDIS with the things which famously ebullient Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker thinks are "brilliant." But, when EW recently caught up with the actress in London, Whittaker was particularly excited about the choice of Ncuti Gatwa as her replacement on the time travel show. Gatwa was cast by Russell T. Davies, who successfully revived Doctor Who in 2005 and is now returning to replace the current showrunner Chris Chibnall. Whittaker's version of the Doctor will "regenerate" into Gatwa's iteration at the end of the feature-length Doctor Who adventure "The Power of the Doctor," which premieres Oct. 23 on BBC America.
"I just think it's the most exciting casting," Whittaker said of Gatwa, whose credits include the TV show Sex Education and the upcoming Barbie movie. "For us to finish, and the baton going not only to Russell but to him, what a thing for us. Because no matter where this goes, he's going to bring on such a huge fandom that won't have seen Doctor Who. So they'll potentially look back at the history and it'll be us, and we're a part of that now, and part of the canon, which is really exciting."

Executive producer Davies called Whittaker to tell her about the casting of Gatwa shortly before the news was announced in May.
"I was waddling around, because I was very pregnant, and my phone rang, and it was Russell," says Whittaker. "He was like, 'Hello, darling, so, I've got some news.' I was like, 'Oh my god!' So, immediately, I was like, please can I have [Ncuti's] number? He was like, 'Of course you can.' I think I then rang him about ten times, but because he's the busiest actor in the land, he was on the set of something else. He was really sweet and texted and said, 'I'll ring you as soon as I wrap.' I ended up speaking to him, and he's so lovely, and now unfortunately gets loads of Whattsaps from me."

The cast of "The Power of the Doctor" also includes Mandip Gill, John Bishop, Sacha Dhawan, Sophie Aldred, and Janet Fielding.

WHAT IN THE HELL..that's all ill say regrading that finale
Dude, that was a wild finale. Even though I got partially spoiled (I thought it was a major spoiler, but there was so much going on it almost didn't matter...), it was still a wild ride.

I have a few minor concerns, but I'll get into that after this special has had time to air out.

Millie Gibson cast as new Doctor Who companion

The Coronation Street actress will make her debut on the show during the 2023 Christmas holidays.

The TARDIS has a new passenger.
The BBC announced today that actress Millie Gibson has been cast on the British science fiction show Doctor Who as the titular time-traveler's new companion, or partner-in-adventures, Ruby Sunday. Gibson, 18, will star opposite Ncuti Gatwa, who is playing the Fifteenth Doctor. Gibson will make her debut on the show over the 2023 Christmas season. Her previous credits include the long-running British soap opera Coronation Street.
"Whilst still being in total disbelief, I am beyond honored to be cast as the Doctor's companion," Gibson said in a statement. "It is a gift of a role, and a dream come true, and I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have travelled in before me. And what better way to do that than being by the fabulous Ncuti Gatwa's side, I just can't wait to get started."

"Millie just is the companion," said Gatwa. "She is full of talent, strength, she has a cheeky sparkle in her eye and is sharp as a razor. From the moment she walked into the room she captured all of our attention with her effervescence and then solidified that attention with the sheer torque of her talent. This adventure is going to be so wild and so fun, I cannot wait to sail the universe with Millie!"

"It's the great honor of my job to find the next generation of talent, and Millie shines like a star already," said showrunner Russell T. Davies. "She's brilliant, dynamic, clever and a wonderful actor. As a Coronation Street fan, I've seen Millie survive chases, guns and sieges, but that's nothing compared to what lies ahead for Ruby Sunday."

Ahead of Gibson's arrival, three new Doctor Who episodes will screen in November with former Doctor Who star David Tennant returning to portray the Fourteenth Doctor. The trio of shows will mark the 60th anniversary of the series. Tennant replaces Jodie Whittaker, whose last episode as the Doctor screened last month.

I kinda dig the simplicity of this look. I always say that when it comes to the Doctor, each incarnation, to me, is like a college professor. Some a little studious, some reckless, some regimented, and I think that's why each person has a favorite Doctor, just like people have their favorite teachers.

This guy looks like he he would fit right in with my HBCU days, so I'm interested to see where this takes us. Plus, you know he'll have some backup or secondary look before too long, anyway.

It's dope to see this doctor will seemingly change up his look more often, the white doctors never showered so it makes sense. Now the doctor got his wash cloth and fresh clothes lol

Knock at the Cabin star Jonathan Groff may soon be knocking at the door of the TARDIS.
The BBC has announced that the actor, whose other credits include Netflix's Mindhunter and the Broadway musical Hamilton, will appear on the new season of British time travel show Doctor Who in what is described as a "key role."
"This is an incredible coup, and a great honor, to get such a huge star striding on to our set," said Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies in a statement. "So strap on your space boots, this is going to be a blast!"

Groff will appear alongside Ncuti Gatwa, who will lead the upcoming season as the Fifteenth Doctor. Millie Gibson will co-star as his companion, Ruby Sunday, on new episodes of the long-running series, which debuted in 1963.

Doctor Who will return in November with a trio of 60th anniversary special episodes starring David Tennant and Catherine Tate. After that, Tennant and Tate will hand off to Gatwa and Gibson. Gatwa's first episode as the Fifteenth Doctor will air over the Christmas holiday season.
"I am so thrilled to jump into the extraordinary mind of Russell T. Davies and watch the incredible Ncuti Gatwa soar in this iconic role!" said Groff.
Groff isn't the first American star to appear on the show. Eric Roberts played the villainous Master in the 1996 Doctor Who TV movie and Neil Patrick Harris is slated to appear in the 60th anniversary shows.

But will The Companion be starry-eyed over The Doctor like all the others were? Except for Donna Noble. She fought with him that's why I liked her. Bil doesn't count.
