@playahaitian and the rest of the NYC folks.

How was it when Staten Island/Wu-Tang hit the scene in y’all’s borough?

It must of felt like a haymaker from Frazier.
real talk... they fit right in...

Onyx, Boot Camp, DiTC etc + Jersey (Naughty, Lords of Underground, Redman etc)
NYC /NJ sound and energy was so grimey in 93 - even with jazz samples

even in that Wu -nothing else sounded like it...
sound was sooo dirty, soulful dark - Rza was too unique-
9 MCs hungry attacking the mic- the posse cuts were fight music

Wu was shaking the world - but in NYC they were holding their own among MONSTERS in Qns Bk, Bx and Harlem

later it boiled to almost being Rae vs Biggie -

until Who Shot ya exploded

That’s dope.

there were no shortage of great Rappers during that period. So much hunger and kats were always elevating.

coming from an area that doesn’t produce any type of hip-hop, we just caught on to what was hot, bought albums, then live vicariously through them. Lol

Vulcan perfect

Ain't really much more to it honestly

@4 Dimensional I guess I COULD add this

Most of us had no idea what the f*ck Staten Island was...

Later the same would could be said about Yonkers

What that crew did for THAT borough was so damn special

Much respect later to crews who represented Boston North Carolina Tennessee, The bay etc etc defining a place and sound forever.

Now the sound...

It fit in perfectly with east coast sonics

But no one was RZA

I think maybe only Timerland did that sonically and defined an era and all music moving forward.

RZA will forever be beloved because sonically he didn't just hit our ears

He hit our souls. Those Kung fu references the comic books

No one had ever done it like THAT.

And it was a secret language and secret society we did not know existed but we found out we're always a part of

On some hip hop Harry Potter.

RZA was a gangsta drug dealer nerd scientist kid from NY

You cannot understand how significant that was

And the whole chambers approach

The unity

It was more about it being so original and grimy and organic and UNEXPECTED

On a whole?

There was no beef

Cause it was like manifest destiny

Nothing was gonna stop it.

Just accept it and join in

Wu Tang.

Man, I love NYC culture. I always envied you kats that got to grow up during the height of hip-hip. Many of y’all went school with some of the great rappers. Grew up on the same block like it was some everyday type shit.

There is no way I could have a perspective of what it was like. I just listen to the stories.

I was talking to my homie today and I mention to him the next producer to have that gutter grimey sound like RZA was Havoc.

Hence why 36 Chambers and The Infamous are two top 5 hip-hop albums of all time for me. No group defined hip-hop they Mobb Deep and Wu-Tang did for me.

GZA was the one I related to the most. Especially watch the show and seeing how well he was respected for just being smart. But all them kats I respected differently. I’m not a gangsta and never was. But I hung around kats that was about that life. And the knowledge they would drop and definitely some shit you don’t get out of textbook.

These don’t have the same impact as ODB records though….

Knocked Up used Shimmy Ya to set the tone for the film…..”baby I like it raw” as the credits cross the screen….ODB did what he said he wanted to do. I gotta give him the nod not as the best rapper, not the most classics….his music has stood the test of time.

You think they don’t want to use meth records? Keep in mind ODB is dead and im not sure who controls his catalog but ramble he needed money.

Assuming

Meth doesn’t need money or isn’t as pressed ODB. You could easily take some of meths song and turn the into commercials. Also meth never wanted to be a star he said as much and that why he wore the weird eye kept his hair “nappy”.

Perfectly stated

Knowledge wisdom Vulcan understanding

Another documentary would be about being smart and black and male

And how damn rare that was in Hollywood

And the insane cultural significance of Dewayne Wayne on black male intellectuals

Shout out Geordi.

That is a part of the divide in current hip hop culture

We KNEW these gods and legends

For real

I had the honor of meeting Ason, Uncle Ralph, Busta, the fugees, Das efx, Channel live and more

And later in life umcs primo woodchuck...

So we KNEW it was NOT EASY

It was hard to earn

No disrespect to the young ones

But they all know each other too

But sadly also knew it was not difficult in many cases.

Meth records don't stand the test of time like ODB's does. And they do use some. "Da Rockwilder" with Redman you can find it still getting played somewhere. Meth is a star. Whether he wanted to be or not he is. No denying that.

Bro...

I was the one that announced that on here

So trust I know

Do NOT understand estimate Meth

Don't you do it.
Aye....let me say this. I'm not underestimating Meth. He's a star. I'm not arguing who got the best catalog. Who's the better rapper. I think you can get a lot of different answers to those questions. Some would say Deck is the best lyricist....some would say Rae or Ghost the best rapper.....some would say Meth.....nobody would say ODB to any of them answers.

But there is one thing that ODB can claim and its his music has stood the test of time better than anyone else's...his commercial mainstream records anyway.

I respect it

I disagree wu tang redefined what a 'commercial " record was PERIOD

Who has one of what is UNIVERSALLY CONSIDERED one of the single greatest verses in hip hop period?

Deck Triumph

That verse is universally know

It's entrenched in pop culture FOREVER.

There is at least 2 generations of kids who think hey you get off my cloud was ORIGINATED by Meth.

I am not and will not disparage ODB greatness

That's is why I HATE these type of debates in music sports etc Hate them. (Let's rank albums, videos, etc)

But don't let a recent commercial rewrite decades of influence

ODB is eternal there is no metric for that.

But in his own right Meth and Ghost (who was kinda in a marvel movie just saying) hold a special place in history in their own right.

Go play chez, chez,la ghost and all I need anywhere anytime in the world

Club, supermarket, wedding, commercial, car and mall and see the reaction.

That's your answer

To a question that shouldn't really ever need to be asked.

Season 2 was ok.

The Protect Ya Neck and Enter The Wu-Tang episodes would have played out better if they had the actors lip sync over the tracks.

Their actual voices threw the tone and vibe off.

Ehhh you play them records in certain parts of the country....it ain't gonna touch like Got Your Money, Fantasy or Ghetto Superstar will.

Its a good debate to have. The fact that we discussing numerous guys in Wu as being the best is accredited to their greatness.

Deck verse on Triumph is great. Its a certain audience that will appreciate that and I don't think its "pop culture" if I'm being honest. And its not just the LG commercial that go the looking at ODB's career different. Man I been hearing his records for YEARS. Not just Got Your Money....like I said Shimmy Ya can be heard in movies and shit randomly.

that's why this argument is kinda pointless

In my experience?

Those OTHER records ring just as much... It all depends on so many variables

Location age situation etc

what you want to use record sales? spins? streams? royalty fees?

this aint really a debate cause unless you have a solid metric to defend your position?

what is the common denominator?

Wu Tang is Forever

we all knew that already

to start doing that level of dissection is ultimately gonna be disrespectful to the legends we debating

Especially since ODB is died so young in his career after a prison stint and addiction.

ALL those records are equally timeless

but the fact that Meth and Ghost and the rest of the clan can STILL perform those records?

Its gonna never be something you can debate and quantify.

I guess they will take it through Wutang Forever and the Summer Jam where Ghostface dissed Hot 97, then they got blackballed... and ODB got locked up. That was definitely where everything changed.

Just finished the show, liked season 2 better than 1 but both are worth the watch.

Wonder if we'll get this gem in the show
