The market is horrible right now. I know this white dude who runs a hedge fund and he told me not to invest in anything expecting it to jump. He said if I had a margin account, I could make some decent money short selling. He said he thought Dick's sporting goods stock would do good this year and said it was safe to buy a few shares of Apple at this price, besides that, he said I should chill and wait till the market bounces back.

Nothing wrong with sticking to what you know and it sounds like you're holding it down with real estate for the time being. They are not to be taken lightly. I've made more than $16,000 so far this month, $16,518.05 to be exact. Here is a screenshot from my broker. I have my profits go back to my debit card. It says "credit card", but the card ending in (6057) is a debit and the one ending in (0624) is a credit card. The 6k withdrawal was to pay off the balance cause I had purchased a few things.

The market is definitely in correction territory. Don't know if you have experience doing that....but short selling and trading on margin can MORE than take your account down to zero and if they issue a margin call, then they want their money FAST. Short selling in a bearish market isn't the greatest idea.

yep. it has been a rough 6 months. but then again a correction was expected. made 20k last year but overall, portfolio is down about 30k. ah well, just gonna wait this one out. in the meantime I think the best place to invest will be in dividend stocks, particularly REITs like O
inspite of all the shit happening around us, they've been up 12 percent in the past year

OK, it's 2016. Let's go !!!
Let's see if I can make up for that big loss I had in november 2015.

Funded my broker account with 500 euro's so I have about 700 euro in total.

GOAL is to double my account.
My preferred weapon of choice: Options.

SO today I opened my 1st first position for this year.
Sold PUT credit spread 405/410 AEX (index) for 1,05
In simple words I'm risking 298 to make 105 euros.

We'll know on Feb 18th whether this was a good or a bad trade.

Glanced at my retirement portfolio (RRSP) and fortunately it didn't take too bad a hit. Got the mid-January statement recently and it was only down $0.80. Had to laugh 'cuz it's been all over the place over the years. Up $100. Down $1000. Up $2000. Down $1800. Up $3900. Down $700. Up $200. Down $10.

To only drop less than $1 was comedy. Still got decades to go before retirement, so need to be patient. Everything else is in order (savings, chequing, real estate & TFSA).

That is a lot of investments for such a small amount of money. Unless one of those stocks skyrockets, the collective trading fees alone will wipe out any gains. If you are worried about spending your money if it just sits in your savings account, you could set up automatic deductions into your investment accounts and invest 500-1k at a time in an exchange traded fund(etf).

Good idea. I was planning on reinvesting another 1k into my ETF portfolio today. Should i wait? I don't really need the money. I have enough to spare. Also, after this 1k, i was planning on reinvesting another $500 every 3 months on EFTs while investing $650 on stocks every 6 months. At rate, i should have invested another 6 - 7K in 3 years. I'll also just throw in some change into my account every once in a while. I'm 25 right now. By the time i'm 40, i think i should have about 25k or more invested into it. With an impending 401k from my future job too.

Okay, i just reinvested another 1k into EFTs. I'll hope for the best in the upcoming 3-4 years. Actually, i plan on dropping another 2-3k in EFTs before the end of the year. I'm trying to get some investments going before i start paying rent. i live with my parents now and i plan on moving out later this year or early next year. I need to lay down from ground work. I also have a 5% high yield savings account at Netspend with 5k in there. Hoping i can make some extra money to reinvest before the end of the year. Yes, i know i made a terrible decision with ZAZA. I've already lost $300 because i didnt pay attention. I plan on just waiting it out completely. I could lose all my money. All $300 of it, but oh well.

Closed my trade yesterday for 97 euro profit.....:hmm:
But I'm pissed at how this trade went .

See below how the index fell from 430 since Feb. 1st

jq0y0l.png

f5dd9t.png

As you can see i opened the trade on Feb. 1st and it started to go against me.
I decided to wait until the Index reached the 412 mark to take action. In my situation i would close the short side (410 put) of my spread and leave the long side open.
Why ? Because the index going down hard and would make me some serious money.

However i failed to close the short side of my spread due insufficient margin on my account.
As you can see the 405 put went from 0.4 to 29 points or 2900 euros, so i could have made at least 4 or 5 times what i had risked. And I couldn't seize the opportunity.
That's why i'm pissed.

I love options. Puts usually but calls as well. It's easy if you daytrade it in and out. Especially around earnings reports

NOTICE how O, is up 28 percent. REITs are the safest bets now.

Lot's of information in this thread.
Have a look this which explains a method of investing suited for the longterm.

I tried it a couple times but it didn't work out for me.
The Degiro platform I'm trading on is very limited and not suited for these plays IMO.
My preferred platform would be ThinkorSwim for (option)analysis and Interactive Brokers for order execution (low fees) and access to almost every stock market in the world.

Forgot to mention sold a AEX 390/385 put spread on Feb 25th for 95 euro risking 310.

Closed my AEX 390/385 put spread today with at 27 euro for a 68 euro profit.
Sold a new spread AEX 415/410 put spread for 80 risking 290.
Not sure if this one will go.

I want my account to look like yours in another 5 - 6 years. Investing has become a hobby to me.
