Cory Holcomb - "Dave Chappelle is overrated"

He made one in 2012. "Your Way ain't working" spent a whole hour talking about females and abortions. The nigga been talking about the same old shit his whole career.

That's the special that started to change my perception of him as a comedian.

Prior to that I had a high opinion of him but as you said he was doing material on the same subject matter and out of an hour special only about 20 minutes to a half an hour was funny.

That's another thing I was wondering. Does he talk about anything other than women ain't shit and who's gay in Hollywood? I literally can't think of anything he spoken on other than this.

One bad thing about social media is everything gets recirculated as if it is new.

I just saw this and almost posted, glad I did a search.

Shit went up less than 24 hours ago and has over 657K views and over 1,000 comments.

Everybody responding like this is some new shit.

Dave is known for his stand up not his movies. And Dave hasn't been in a ton of movies. This mofo just talking cause he knows y'all gonna spread it all over the net.

That was the wildest part. The only Dave Chappelle movie I can even name is Half Baked. (Blue Streak too but that is not a Chappelle movie. After fucking Robin Hood, I seriously can't even name another.)

Con Air. Holcomb still sucks and will never touch Chappelle money because he has no talent.

Dave did go through a period where he seemed like he was giving a lecture instead of comedy.
I got to give it up to him, the new clips I have seen of him lately are pretty good.
The Space Jews bit is really funny, and quite brilliant.

Did you see his special immediately after the murder of George Floyd?

The line I most remember from it is when he, after going on for a while, said "This shit isn't funny at all" and everyone laughed.

The special only had maybe 5 laugh lines if I recall correctly and that's probably overstating it. It really wasn't funny at all.

And it was fucking INCREDIBLE.

So Dave gets a pass from me. Outside of that one event, he has always brought some comedy to every lecture. And as long as he nails the comedy part, he has that license. He's a world-class orator and observer.

He is just riding the fame of the Chappelle show. What stand up show has Chappelle done that you consider a classic and can listen over and over?

I don't listen to any stand up specials "over and over" but I, in the last hour in this thread, just cited one recent classic special of his and described why it was unique from any other special in history.

Also I like his early stand up better than Chappelle's Show. Killin' Em Softly is one of my favorites and worth revisiting every 5 years or so. I enjoy watching bits when I see them circulated, as they still are with frequency.

Your first question was what has he done.. he’s done about 4 or more specials which means he’s done something.. now how you feel about them is up to you… but in the end he’s done several standups, done tours, made several host/ appearances on sat night live and as amajorfucup said made over 100 million and counting

Checking Netflix he's done about 8 actual specials since returning with another 3 that weren't full specials.

But to be fair Corey has done hundreds of YouTube broadcasts in that time so he's definitely beating Dave if we're counting those.

The YouTube podcasts don't count as standup specials in the arena of Comedy.

Just sayin..

This is old but Dave Chappelle's show was good because of himself the other comedians cast members on the show and the writers, all of that combined made for a great show and he had great musical guests on there.

He was smart to end it and walk away cause it's stamped and etched into history as one of the best comedic shows ever which is something to be proud of.

As far as his comedy goes, some like it and some don't but that's with most comedians and I do think after success some goes through a faze of being blinded or their third eye opening up and what they talk about isn't going to fit what you're used to hearing from them cause that's no longer them. Some can transition ok while others have a harder time.

I always got the feeling like Dave is holding back and wants to say shit that'll get him banned from a lot of places.it might just be me

Corey is funnier stand up than Dave by far in my opinion. I've seen Corey perform at least 4 or 5 times and every time he rocked a tough Philly crowd. All Daves standups have been chuckle worthy but not straight up hillarious. Dave is much much better on TV. The chapelle show was 10 times funnier than any standup dave has ever done.

I think when people are comparing Chapelle to holcolmb they are talking comedic talent in General and in General daves TV sketch abilities surpass Corey's standup but if we are talking pure Stand-up controlling a crowd and rocking a black audience. Corey one of the greats.

It's all subjective and only a matter of opinion or preference but calling someone like Corey one of the greats when he's never been able to put out a successful or well received special and base this solely off of club shows doesn't hold up IMO.

He doesn't have a resume to go against decades of comedians who've been far more prolific and well received. And Corey has a few comedy specials which were released (one by Kevin Hart on Showtime) but just weren't that good to be honest.

Also Corey claiming Dave's success has come in movies and TV instead of comedy is laughable since the only movie he's been the lead in that has had any success would be Half Baked. Other than that he has very few acting credits aside from bit parts.

And he's had even less success with TV with the Chappelle Show being the exception but 2 seasons of a comedy show that hasn't aired in over 20 years wouldn't explain the success he's had in comedy since returning.

If someone asked in the NBA thread what Joel Embiid has done, you wouldn't highlight money over performance, would you?
Bad comp. NBA players sign guaranteed deals based largely on projection, expectation and resources already invested. Comedians sign deals based on actual revenue they produce and fan/consumer reception. Also, Chappelle is soundly viewed as being in a very short list and conversation of the best to ever do it in his vocation.

So has Steven A Smith
NO he hasnt. He is in negotiation for a rumored deal worth that amount. Negotiations that have been ongoing for a year+. But to your point, hes able to negotiate for that amount due to his accomplishments and ratings earned. So by default, that number is evidence to all he has accomplished. That aint just giving that to him.
