Some of Us would rather claim North African/East African history than study our own actual history from West Africa. A whole host of actual Academic papers/research et al. on the widespread practice of Islam, Vodun, animism etc. amongst slaves before/after arrival in the Americas. Even more scholarship on the wide variety of religions that were present in the places our ancestors originated and their dissimilarity from the monotheistic religions but the focus is on Maghrebi Jews from antiquity or Christianity in ancient Aksum.
