Damm, some comments from users on another board about May, them cats dislike him more than I do:eek: But I've made the RJ Jr. comparison numerous times..Shouts out to James Toney - the last non-excuse P4P champ.

> > Floyd would use a lot of excuses just to avoid
> > fighting Cotto or Pacquiao: Purse issue or PPV
> > share, weight issue, date and time, or even
> > another so called "RIB" injury.

>
> Perhaps he should try being a comedian... :O

Joe, I was saying all along that Fraud is ROY JONES LITE!

Jones use to use monetary excuses to avoid formidable opponents.
His mouth would go 500 MPH if confronted on why he isn't fighting legitimately good fighters. He promoted himself and wanted to get paid big money for fighting stiffs and tomato cans. Marquez is Fleather's Tarver.

ALL THESE APPLY TO FLEATHER JR.

(This one really made me laff...."Fleather"..)

Fleather: Genuine synthetic fighter. Initially looks like the real thing, but upon close inspection, it's an obvious cheap immitation.

:lol::lol: That's just foul.:smh: Btw, Floyd is a realer champ than RJ imho.

my man... i really appreciate it. do you have any idea what the password for the holmes/cooney link is?

It's passworded? Ok I have another copy laying around, let me find it and I'll post. No problem tho, if you need any others, let me know. I'm converting that Shaver/Holmes match for ya, I think it's the rematch tho, I can't find Holmes/Shavers I right now, I'll ask Circle or WelshDevil if they have a copy laying around.

I can understand that one...He (Floyd) fought better comp in most of his weight classes compared to Roy. Other than Toney, what other elite fighter did Roy face until before he went for the heavyweight title? Virgil Hill?

...and while I may seem like a defender of Floyd, if I went to those boards, I'd really tell them why Floyd hasn't fought those guys they keep talking about (and all of us on this board know).

De La Hoya blog: Marquez will beat Mayweather

Oscar De La Hoya says in his weekly blog that Juan Manuel Marquez will shock a lot of people when he fights Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Sept. 19 in Las Vegas on pay-per-view television. Here’s why:

By Oscar De La Hoya

Everything is in Juan Manuel Marquez’s favor now. Floyd Mayweather has a lot of distractions, he’s been away from the sport for two years and he has a rib injury. I strongly feel everything is falling into place. This is the right time for Marquez to beat him.

And even if Mayweather didn’t have these problems, I feel Marquez’s style is well-suited for Mayweather. Mayweather is going to want to prove not only to himself but to all the fans that he can put on a good show, which means he is going to have to stand in front of Marquez. That will work in Marquez’s favor.

Marquez is not a slow fighter at all; he’s faster than people think. He showed that twice against Manny Pacquiao, who is very fast. And Mayweather doesn’t throw punches in bunches like Pacquiao. He throws one, two punches and that’s it. That will allow Marquez time to think and find openings. It won’t be like Pacquiao, who throws punches from everywhere the whole fight.

Another question is Mayweather’s age. Once you hit 30, things start to change. It will be very interesting to see how that affects Mayweather, especially because he’s been away for two years. Marquez (36) has already experienced that and has been able to adapt to changes in his body and mind after 30.

I also feel Marquez won’t respect Mayweather’s power at all because he’s been in there with hard punchers. I’ll tell you one thing: Mayweather does not hit hard. The only thing Marquez has to worry about is Mayweather dancing around all night long, sticking that jab in his face. That’s it.

Again, I don’t think Mayweather will do that, though. I just don’t think he’ll want to run from a smaller guy. If Mayweather thinks he’s the best fighter pound for pound –- and he does -– he’ll have to stand toe to toe with the smaller guy. He’ll be pressured to do that because that’s what the crowd at the MGM Grand will want.

Mayweather has this big ego. I’m sure he’s thinking, “I can take care of a guy as small as Marquez with no problem.”

I think the delay of the fight [from July 18 to Sept. 19 because of Mayweather’s rib injury] is a blessing in disguise. It gave Marquez more time to get stronger, to bulk up and get his speed back. You start out using heavy gloves and then use smaller and lighter gloves to get faster as your body adapts to it.

Marquez has a tremendous jab and will to win. If Marquez does for 12 rounds what I did [against Mayweather] for seven rounds, he can win the fight easily. It doesn’t take all the power in the world; it just takes planning your shots right. It takes smarts. And that’s what Marquez has. He’s one of the smartest fighters on the planet.

As long as you use your jab against Mayweather he’s lost. He doesn’t know how to block a jab. And if you feint him, it stops him in his tracks. You don’t want to allow Mayweather time to think; that’s when he can be dangerous. You have to jab, to feint. That’s the key.

Mayweather’s layoff also will be a factor. Two years is a very long time to be away from boxing. I’m sure he went to the gym here and there but actually being in a competitive fight up in the ring, with eight-ounce gloves, is a whole different thing. I’m sure he’ll have some rust the night of the fight.

I can see the first round being a feeling-out round. Mayweather will realize right away that his weight advantage is not a big deal at all the way he thought it would be. I feel things will start to heat up in the second round, when Mayweather will start hearing boos from all those fans who come in for Mexican Independence weekend, all the rowdy Marquez fans.

Then Mayweather will want to prove that he can stand in front of a smaller guy with no problem. That’s when things will start to unfold in Marquez’s favor. Mayweather is not invincible. I truly feel Marquez will expose him.

 at Floyd calling Marquez "a decent, solid fighter". :smh:

He's trying desperately to sell the fight...remember he's supposed to be the antagonist in this matchup, so he has to act out as the bad guy...

Problem is, he already gave him props for a good few months after the fight was signed, calling him the best p4p in the game now and that he beat Pacquiao twice (which is true ;))

Very true, the fight is billed correctly. Even though I believe Floyd is gong to win this fight, and the blog is a bit biased, ODH made some good points. I don't buy the whole distracted thing, but as far as it not being a good look for Floyd if he doesn't stand in front of and beat up the little guy, that WILL create opportunities for Marquez. I also believe Floyd doesn't hit as hard as Marquez either regardless of size.

He also will be a bit rusty(at least Rusty for Floyd) for the first few rounds. Though I do believe Floyd should win this one, I won't be totally, mouth open in shock, Tarver-KO-RJ surprised if Marquez was t pull out a decision based on workrate and or landing a few better blows than Floyd and he is going to land some. He's just to accurate and too smart for Floyd to make him look foolish like some of the other guys he's fought. Will Floyd stand and fight or will he dance? I just don't think Floyd will be able to dance and potshot his way to victory with the judges this time. Oscar knows what it feels like to get robbed because of that too(just like a few cats know what it's like to get robbed fighting him). He boxed Tito's ass off:smh: But the judges in Vegas are harsh with guys who aren't aggressive. What do you think, you think Floyd is keeping it real when he says he going for the spectacular KO win or is he hyping shit? It's not inconceivable given his size and Marquez lack of any fights at welter.

Whether he is keeping it real or not, it will be a feat if he does, because JMM has never been stopped in any weight class...

What could put Floyd over the top in this one is if he pulled off something like he did in the fight against Corrales...

Very true, imo Marquez only lost his very first pro fight, the two fights against Pac and the losses to Norwood and John were robbed.

Yeah, if Floyd pulls a Corrales on this dude, I would have to bow my head in respect. But he's gotta do it to Pac or Cotto as well and fight Mosley before hecalls it quits for good, to attain that "Great Champion" status, at least in my mind.

Mayweather-Marquez: What People Are Saying

The megafight between Floyd Mayweather and lightweight champ Juan Manuel Marquez is looking more like a circus attraction than a major fight but it is creating a buzz in the boxing world.

This is what some of the people in boxing have had to say about the upcoming match.

Rocky Juarez (Training for featherweight champion Chris John)

"I want Marquez to win and will be pulling for him to win but I wouldn't put my money on it because Floyd is bigger and his speed might trouble Marquez but it will be very interesting."

Oscar De La Hoya (promotor and former fighter)

"Mayweather has this big ego. I’m sure he’s thinking, “I can take care of a guy as small as Marquez with no problem.”

I truly feel Marquez will expose him."

Freddy Roach (ex fighter and famous trainer)

"They can call Mayweather-Marquez "No. 1" but it smells like No. 2," said Freddie Roach. "The fight stinks. Two counter-punchers waiting for the other one to make the first move is boring and proves nothing."
"If Mayweather wanted to prove he was the best all he had to do was wait one day to see who won Pacquiao-Hatton before signing to fight Marquez. You might as well rename him Fraud Mayweather, Jr.“

Ross Greenburg (President of HBO Sports)

“Floyd Mayweather, the mouth that roared, is back and he is going into the lions den.”
“I have seen Marquez in the ring and in rounds 6-12, you better watch out.”

Teddy Atlas (trainer and ESPN commentator)

"Marquez will be doing everything he can to make this a fight that he can win. That reason alone will make it a good competitive fight. But the variables that come into play will be is Marquez too small, is Marquez too old, he is older and been in some tough fights, is this the night he gets old, does his skin hold up, Mayweather could maybe do a job on him from the outside he cuts him up and it doesn’t become the kind of contest that we want it to become."

Roger Mayweather (former fighter and trainer of Floyd Mayweather)

"I know what’s going to happen, and I’m sure all of you know what’s going to happen.”

It’s going to be a great fight and I know that this guy over here [Floyd] is going to come out on top.”

Shane Mosley (welterweight champion avoided this year)

"Why would he(Mayweather) be fighting the lightweight champion, he should be fighting the welterweight champion, that's me"

Floyd Mayweather Jr.

"When I get back into the ring, I plan to show my fans what they've been missing these past 18 months. I will destroy Marquez and reclaim my rightful place as boxing's pound-for-pound king all in one night."

Juan M. Marquez

"I am glad Mayweather has been cleared to fight and we can get down to business,'' Marquez said. "My win will be for all the people and entire country of Mexico. I am sure of victory."

“Everyone knows I don’t like to talk outside of the ring, I do all of my talking inside of the ring.”

It seems everybody has a say but come September 19th the talk will end and the action will begin.

Freddie Roach: “Pacquiao is Taking This Fight Too Lightly”

roach45342463.jpg

(from boxingnews24.com)
Freddie Roach isn’t happy with the way things are going lately with Manny Pacquiao, who has decided to train in the Philippines rather than some place else. “I’m not pleased with him [Pacquiao] training in the Philippines, there are too many distractions, but that’s what he wants to my understanding, and I believe he is taking this fight too lightly" Roach said in an interview at the Doghouse Boxing website. So there it is. Roach thinks that Pacquiao is taking this fight too lightly.

Why am I not surprised? Of course Pacquiao is probably taking his November 14th fight against Miguel Cotto too lightly, because Pacquiao’s ego is being fed night and day by his legion of lovesick fans, who tell him how great he is and basically kiss his backside.

Pacquiao is probably believing what they’re saying about him and reading his own press. In the Philippines, Pacquiao is treated like a king, and there’s no one to tell him give him the straight talk like me. Roach sounds scared of Pacquiao judging him from his comments.

That is so funny. It looks as if Pacquiao is drunk on his wins over a shot Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton, and sees himself as infallible. Roach thinks that the people around Pacquiao are feeding his ego and making him think that Cotto will be an easy fight. I think Roach is partially right about that.

Pacquiao does have a lot of sycophants blowing smoke up his backside, but he also seems to have fooled himself with his easy wins against his hand picked opposition in the past year. Pacquiao seems to think that a victory over Hatton and De La Hoya translates into him being able to beat one of the best fighters in boxing in the 28-year-old Cotto.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news for Pacquiao, but Cotto isn’t shot like De La Hoya, and not prone to eating, drinking and ballooning up in weight between fights like Hatton. Pacquiao will finally be facing a good fighter for a change, and he’s going to get the living daylights beaten out of him.

It looks as it’s finally dawned on Roach who Pacquiao is facing on November 14th. Roach says “I have been watching countless hours again and again of Cotto’s past fights. He nullified Shane Mosley’s speed and that’s Manny’s greatest asset.” It’s too bad that Roach waited until now to watch video of Cotto, because if he had asked me about it, I’d have told Roach that Pacquiao was going to get a beating of his life against Cotto.

I guess Roach must have watched Cotto’s bouts against Antonio Margarito and Joshua Clottey, two of Cotto’s least impressive fights, when Roach gave the go ahead for Pacquiao to fight Cotto. Yes, Roach, Cotto is a very good fighter, perhaps even better than Pacquiao.

Looks like Pacquiao Plans to Run from Cotto

By Manuel Perez: Not only will Manny Pacquiao have an advantage with the catch weight, location of the fight and the bigger pay for his November 14th bout against World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Miguel Cotto, but appears that fight will be taking place in a large 20 foot ring at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Previously, it was thought that the fight would take place in a 24 foot ring, but it now appears that it will take place in the 20 footer. Thought it’s not an 18 foot ring, which is favored by sluggers like Cotto, it’s still a big enough ring to allow Pacquiao to have the luxury of running all around it like a chicken with his head cut off while being chased by Cotto.

The bigger ring seems to suggest that Pacquiao will be doing some running around the ring. I can’t say I’m surprised by that. I didn’t expect the little Filipino to stand and trade with Cotto. Pacquiao will probably try the hit and run tactics that he sometimes uses against fighters with a lot of power. Pacquiao tried that against Juan Manuel Marquez, but it didn’t work very well against the powerful Mexican.

When Pacquiao would jump forward to land, Marquez would greet him more often than not with a straight jab or a right hand to the head. And when Pacquiao would scurry away, Marquez would chase after him, punishing the retreating Pacquiao. If you watch that fight, Pacquiao usually retreats by backing straight up. Marquez was easily able to follow after Pacquiao and hit him with shots.

With all this talk about Pacquiao being boxing’s pound for pound number #1 fighter, why would he want such a big ring? If Pacquiao is a great slugger, wouldn’t you think that he would stand up on his hind legs and tell his management that he wants an 18 foot ring so that he can slug with Cotto?

I’m really disappointed in Pacquiao if the 24 foot ring is used. I hope Pacquiao doesn’t plan on stinking up the joint on November 14th by running from Cotto for the entire fight. In the end, whether the fight is held in a 20 foot ring or an 18 footer, it won’t matter. Cotto will still be able to pick Pacquiao off with hard jabs when Manny runs forward trying to land his straight left hands or his right hook.

He only has two real weapons and he uses those punches over and over again. Cotto doesn’t need to worry about a jab, because Pacquiao doesn’t really throw many jabs at all. But gosh, I’m really surprised at Pacquiao going along with a medium sized 20 foot ring.

Pacquiao might turn the fight into kind of a kid’s game of tag, but I can’t see Pacquiao getting away with it. Pacquiao moves reasonably well when he’s jumping forward, but he is very hittable when he backs up. That is where Cotto will rake the little Filipino with punches and make Pacquiao pay for his shots. When Pacquiao starts to run, Cotto will chase him down and clobber him with shots.

Roy Jones Jr: “Hopkins Has Never Been Impressive Against Nobody”

340x.jpg

By Eric Thomas: In a hilarious interview by Ben Thompson at the Fighthype website, Roy Jones Jr. had a good time telling it like it is ripping apart both Bernard Hopkins and Oscar De La Hoya. Jones, 40, had this to say about Hopkins: “Hopkins don’t look impressive against nobody. Let’s face the music. Hopkins has never been impressive.” Jones then went on to correctly point out that Hopkins usually wins his fights by wearing down his opponents rather than stopping them with one punch or outclassing them like Jones unusually does.

Jones isn’t exactly happy with Hopkins nowadays after Hopkins turned down a fight with Jones this past month in which Jones offered a deal where the winner of the fight would get 60% of the purse and the loser 40%. Hopkins was totally uninterested in the deal and hung up the phone during the interview.

Jones took that as a sign that Hopkins isn’t confident in his ability, even after all these years. Jones defeated Hopkins by a 12 round decision in May 1993, even though Jones fought most of the fight using only his left hand because he had injured his right hand early in the bout.

Jones wasn’t finished with the topic of Hopkins, making fun of Hopkins’ statement on the Calvin Murphy show where Hopkins said “Why would I want to fight Roy Jones when the fans want to see me fight Chad Dawson and Adamek?” Jones thought that was silly, saying to Thompson, “But the fans don’t want to see this crap. They want to see you [Hopkins] fight Roy Jones and see you redeem your loss or try to redeem it.” Jones has a point there.

Although Dawson and Adamek might be doing better in their careers than Jones at this point, neither of them would likely bring in a ton of fans the way that a Jones-Hopkins fight would. That’s pretty much a given. I doubt that anyone other than hardcore boxing fans would want to see Hopkins fight Adamek, simply because the casual fans have no idea who Adamek is. He has only been shown on American television a handful of times and is still mostly an unknown fighter to many of the more casual fans of the sport. The same applies for Dawson. He might be the best fighter in the light heavyweight division, but few people really know who he is at this point in his career.

That could change in the future if he fights the right kinds of opponents and looks good in beating them. But Jones is right, boxing fans would probably much prefer to see Hopkins fight Jones rather than Adamek or Dawson. I’m surprised that Hopkins can’t see that himself. How can he compare Adamek and Dawson, two fighters that are still basically unproven, with a former pound for pound star like Jones.

Jones also had some comments to make about De La Hoya after Thompson left Jones know that De La Hoya thinks that Jones should retire. “I don’t even think he’s got enough respect to talk about me. I never gave up, He [De La Hoya] gave to a smaller man [Manny Pacquiao]. I ain’t never quit in the ring, so don't tell me what I need to do.”

That's how Mayweather always does it. Usually he'll say something like "Yeah he's a good little fighter, but..."

I can't post on the main board, so I will be in here more often

I hope ya'll are right and it's just a show and he doesn't really go in the ring believing that Marquez is just a decent fighter. But like me and tp2001 have been saying, Floyd, early on when the fight was announced, heaped all kinds of praises on JMM so I'm sure ya'll are right. Plus I think that's the frame of mind he always requires going into a fight so.....So since you're limited access you can join us on the dream boxing matchup thread which will be resurrected shortly.

Pac has been a diva the last few years. Only reasons he gets a pass from the fans is that he has an exciting style & isn't as vocal about it.

It's fucked up when Roach can't make a simple phone call to his fighter.

Dissention Growing in Pacquiao's Team? Roach/Koncz Rift

By Mark Vester

There appears to be a rift growing in Manny Pacquiao's team. Trainer Freddie Roach has a beef with Pacquiao's advisor Mike Koncz. WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto has been training for the November 14 fight with Pacquiao for the last few weeks. Pacquiao has not started his camp and Roach has no idea when Pacquiao will begin his camp and where the camp will take place. Roach blames Koncz for the lack of communication. He is also upset over some recent comments made by Koncz, where he said Roach was "just a trainer."

"Every time, I call Manny’s number, Mike Koncz answers the phone and I tell Mike ‘where are we training?’ [Koncz] said, ‘I haven’t asked Manny yet.’ I said, ‘well, don’t you think you should ask him? Let’s get something straight here so we know which direction we’re going.’ I’m a little pissed off to be honest with you [about] the lack of communication," said Roach to the Asian Journal .

"Mike Koncz made a comment that we don’t need to talk to Freddie he’s only the trainer. Well, Mike Koncz, I’m the only one in the camp that knows boxing and knows the sport…I’ve been studying this guy (Cotto), watching his fights, I have a good strategy in mind and we just have to implement it now. Well, maybe Mike Koncz can come up with the strategy. I don’t know. You know, I’m so pissed off with that guy you know if they don’t want me to be the trainer anymore that’s fine with me do it yourself."

Roach doesn't think some of the people on Pacquiao's team are taking this fight serious enough. He doesn't buy the talk of Cotto being too slow and he expects the best Cotto ever come fight night.

"People tell me he’s too slow," said Roach. "He beat Shane Mosley, one of the fastest guys in the world. He knows how to nullify speed. He knows a win over Manny Pacquiao erases all the bad things that’s happened in his past. So anyone who thinks this is an easy fight is a fool. This guy is going to give it all he has."

Koncz told ABS-CBN Philippines that there are no problems with Pacquiao's training camp and he plans to settle the beef with Roach "internally."

This is a CLASSIC matchup right here, two of the greatest little guys of all time - Eder Jofre of Brazil and (imho) the greatest Asian fighter of all time Fighting Harada of Japan. Jofre was the Ricardo Lopez of his era, fantastic boxer, lots of power, brilliant tactician. You could say the same of Harada, here's the first fight....I'm looking for the rematch so if anyone comes across it either UL or point me to it, thanks..

:eek::eek: It's about to be on again...

Timothy Bradley vs Lamont Peterson a done deal......

wpdff68a6e.jpg

On December 5th at the Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, California we will get to see undefeated WBO champion Timothy Bradley defend against the unbeaten Lamont Peterson 27-0(13).

Bradley is coming off a No Decision with Nate Campbell, in a bout that was originally announced a tko win, but upon reviewing the fight the California State Athletic commision changed the result.

Fight fans were hoping for a rematch but the undefeated Bradley must first make a mandatory defence before taking any other fight say the WBO.

Peterson is currently the WBO interim champion and is the younger brother of Anthony Peterson who is also a top pro fighter.

Purse Bids

As with any mandatory defense, venue and promotional rights were not agreed on so the promotion went to purse bids.

Today at the WBO headquarters in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Gary Shaw Productions won the purse bid to promote the bout by outbidding Top Rank. Shaw bid $575,000 to Top Rank's bid of $451,000.
