I Am Not Your Negro
2016
8.5/10
I watched this one last night on tubi.
This film is based around a 1979 manuscript that legendary author/activist James Baldwin had started working on. It was based around the assassinations of Medgar Evans, MLK and Malcolm X and how the country was during those times dealing with race relations.
He had only completed 30 pages which this film is based around.
The film extensively uses rare archival film footage of the Civil Rights Movement, clips from well known and rare Hollywood films dating back to the 1920s and with rare color photographs thru-out the decades. The film shows actual photographs of American White Slaves which was a first for me. It uses these images in relation to James Baldwins statements.
The film mainly covers the time periods from the 1920s to events in 2014.
There are a number of rare footage of James Baldwin with his speeches. Actually seeing him speak and where he is speaking makes his message more effective.
Thru-out the film he makes a number of good points that is relevant today with what’s going on in this country with politics, media and culture. He does make comments that you will not agree with. Whether you agree/disagree with him, his comments will have you reevaluate your own opinions on what is currently going on this country.
For the Gay Agenda Trackers, James Baldwin’s sexuality is brought up, it only discusses about him being under FBI Director Hoover’s COINTELPRO.
The film is narrated by Samuel L. Jackson. tubi is overloaded with some good Black documentaries.
Synopsis
In 1979, James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his next project, "Remember This House." The book was to be a revolutionary, personal account of the lives and assassinations of three of his close friends: Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. At the time of Baldwin's death in 1987, he left behind only 30 completed pages of this manuscript. Filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished.
