Alien Romulus

Franchise Tribute

PRAISE: Director Fede Álvarez and his Co writer Rodo Sayagues definitely have love and then some for the Alien films and that love makes most of Alien Romulus work for the most part. Introducing characters that just want the simple pleasures in life and freedom to go with it I immediately cared about them. The standouts are Rain Carradine (Cailee Spaeny who reminds me of Natalie Portman) and Andy ( a truly excellent David Jonsson). The SFX are on point for the most part. A haunting and cold feel is presented and took hold of me as scenes slowly but surely kept the tension building as the crew begins to discover they are in more trouble than they think. The call backs to previous films worked about 80 % of the time. One really stood out and I welcomed the haunting and cold presence of it. Intentions and loyalty are played with and that really made a scene of true anguish work. The practical effects definitely worked in several horrifying scenes that were linked to some standout kills definitely not for the faint of heart along with a few jump scares. I thought the sound design was great,i actually felt every footstep, crash and rumble of an explosion.

PROBLEMS: Because I'm such a huge fan of The Alien movies it kind of killed the suspense for me in several scenes. I knew exactly what characters were looking at before the camera turns to it,and the fate of some characters way before they discovered it for themselves. I said before that 80 percent of the call backs worked but the delivery of a certain line of dialogue came off cheesy. One call back was horrifying to look at but eventually just lead to unintentional laughter from me because it reminded me of scenes from one of the worst films in the franchise.

Netflix continues to dish out action comedies with big names attached to them and this movie about secret agent Roxanne, recruiting her high school flame Mike to be a part of a secret mission. Yes its definitely flimsy but the beginning of the movie was fun for me . Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg looked like they were having fun together. Dana Delany and Berry still look milftastic. There are a few good action sequences. Then the movie starts to get a bit dull in it's second hour with basic things happening and ultra predictable turns. A lot of the talent is wasted and actors collect easy paychecks. Some characters completely vanish for the second half.

It’s murdaaaa lol. As far as my decision to play keep away from re-frys… I had already committed to seeing THE CROW. The Romulus/Crow back to back is as good a swan song as any. (Every pun in this intro is approved regardless of intention lol)

Now, regarding THE CROW (2024), If you a Supernatural series fan - go in with that type of energy. It tries to be a lot of things but does the best at being something like a one off Winchester-less Supernatural. Commit to laughing a lot at a lot of shit no one else is likely to find funny lol

Mercer (Tyrese Gibson) is desperately trying to rebuild his life and his relationship with his son (Christopher A'mmanuel) amidst the turbulent 1992 LA uprising following the Rodney King verdict. Across town, another father and son (Ray Liotta and Scott Eastwood) put their own strained relationship to the test as they plot a dangerous heist at the factory where Mercer works. As tensions rise in Los Angeles and chaos erupts, both families reach their boiling points when they collide in this tense crime-thriller.

This is one of Time's 15 sexiest films. I found this flick on PLEX while I was decompressing from the DNC. It's in French with English subtitles. Ms. Aregento is sexy dan da muh. The sex scenes are pretty real looking (unsimulated) and it is overall well acted and a good story. B++

French provocateur filmmaker Catherine Breillat made some of the most daring and unnervingly exciting films of the early 21st century—if you’ve seen her 2004 Anatomy of Hell, the words tampon teabag will mean something to you. The Last Mistress is among Breillat's subtler films, but it still simmers with raw romantic hunger. Asia Argento plays a sexually insatiable 19th century courtesan who’s about to be abandoned by her young aristocratic lover (Fu’ad Aït Aattou), and she’s not having any of it. She’ll do whatever it takes to hold him, and to secure her own pleasure: when he’s wounded by a bullet, she licks the bloody hole with a kind of feral tenderness. The movie is based on a 19th century novel by Jules Barbey d’Aurevilly, controversial in its day; Breillat had always wanted to adapt it. The Last Mistress, she has said, “is the film where I plunge to the core of romanticism.” Not to mention that the movie’s languorous, muted-velvet color palette is a plushy pleasure unto itself.

Watched Thelma yesterday, and actually quite enjoyed it, as I hoped I would.

The story is straight-forward, and although not a LOL funny movie, it is amusing and will bring a smile to your face in a few instances. Especially knowing of our interactions with parents, grandparents, relatives and so on. And of course the looming threat of scams in today's digital world.

Enjoyed the cast and seeing the different types of interactions. Also ... the interactions with Squibb and Roundtree. That mix of wanting to maintain one's independence, but also the harsh reality of recognizing the limitations in yourself & your immediate peers.

My fave running joke in the movie was the one with her striking up conversations with strangers in the street. "Don't I know you from somewhere?" and in the final 1/4 of the movie the scene with her clicking on the "X" boxes on screen to close out pop-up ads for insurance, joining a gym, lol. We've all been there with ads and spam, haha.

There's a scene near the end of the movie which is pleasant and lasts for only 30 seconds or so ... and during the end credits the director cuts to actual footage of him and his grandma in the car (he's off camera) and it's word for word the scene that was played out near the end of the movie. Really enjoyed that.

Thelma is a 2024 American comedy-drama film written, directed and edited by Josh Margolin. The film stars June Squibb, Fred Hechinger, Richard Roundtree, Clark Gregg, Parker Posey, and Malcolm McDowell.[4]

Thelma premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival on January 18, 2024, and was released in the United States by Magnolia Pictures on June 21, 2024.

Plot

93-year-old Thelma Post lives alone in Los Angeles. Her aimless but loving grandson Daniel "Danny" Markowitz often visits and looks after her needs despite not taking responsibility for his own life. Although Thelma is close with Danny, she finds his constant assistance patronizing.
