I saw some people on twitter calling it another woke movie because of that fact. God forbid a female character is more than a love interest or POC are more than props to the White Saviors.

Never underestimate the internet to find something to complain about. The first post I saw was someone complaining that the movie was sexist because it didn't go into Phoenix's life more in depth. But at the same time, it's not like you couldn't also cut Fanboy or Coyote out and not adversely impact the film. They not trying to build a franchise, they didn't need to add another 30 minutes to build out everyone's backstory...

I'm a veteran of Desert Storm. I was an MP and my job was to secure the flight line as well as other parts of the base. Primarily we protected A10's and there were women pilots and there were brothers flying planes. This was 30 years ago, people on twitter need to get out of the basement. Sidenote my experience with pilots most of them are cocky like what is seen in Top Gun and Green Lantern.
I remember when my JR ROTC program invited a black Apache pilot to come talk to us.

I knew it would do good the second weekend, word or mouth has been great

Saw it a second time in IMAX. That shit was still packed Friday night, so I went today and it was still pretty full.

I know theater chains are probably confused, because of Jurassic Park, which will probably be ass like the last one.

I saw it in Dolby yesterday and I can say for certain that this is the only movie that I will go back to the theater to watch again...i haven't felt this way about a movie since Black Panther came out....I'm going back to see it in IMAX. Dolby man...when them planes took off...:eek2:

This movie Kinda had Rambo 2 feel to it where Maverick had to go in, even though the dude didn't really want him to do it and they wanted to retire him...i wish they had a murdock moment when he said "mission....accomplished"

hilarious.

but dolby cinema > imax

Not in terms of screen size. Especially the theater I go to. Which is REAL IMAX!
But I do love the Dolby Cinema theater at the same complex because of its balcony and electric seats.
The viewing angle from the balcony is awesome.
My plan is to see it again in Dolby Cinema before those Damn Dinosaurs take over all the large-format screens.

When I went back and watched the original Top Gun. Kelly Ginnis or whatever her name is wasn't shit to look at in that movie. Big wide ass jaw and blonde hair yet folks thought she was bad.

Second week box office % drop for a movie that did over 100m 1st week. FOH.

It does sound dumb. However, second week drop off numbers are looked at very closely in Hollywood. That in itself has always been a thing, record or no.

Doesn't matter. There's been movies that made a shit ton of money the first week and dropped off hard afterwards, for various reasons. It's actually the second week numbers that give Hollywood a better idea of longevity in the theaters.

Opening weekend is for the diehards must see it first folk. Afterwards, it becomes a combo of repeat business and folks who still want to see it, but ain't pressed to go opening weekend.

and movie theaters don't really start making money off the actual movie until after the first weekend

Yeah yeah yeah.
It aint even gonna beat Black Panther domestically.
The made up a new record just to keep it in the press.

and being that it didn't do the usual 50% to 70% for a $100 million dollar movie is abnormal

It's not a new record. Shrek 2 has the record.

It's just a impressive performance.

Tom did a sequel 36 years later and opened to his biggest box office ever

also it's drawing older people back to the theaters, and they're the ones who haven't really been going back to the theaters with Covid. I think they said a good percentage of the audience has been over 55. Shit, I notice BGOL keeps saying that. Young people don't give a fuck.

Right how are folks forgetting its been freaking 36 years since the original was made. When this movie dropped older millenials were just going to pre k and kindergarten. Now them same folks is grey haired with some with kids in college.
