New York State Assembly passes bill that lifts ban on MMA

For the first time in nearly 20 years, professional mixed martial arts is set to become a legal activity in the state of New York.

The New York State Assembly passed a bill Tuesday that lifts a ban on professional MMA that had been in place since 1997. The bill passed by a vote of 113-25. It required 76 votes to pass.

Assembly members offered a wide range of opinions on the bill and MMA itself.

Daniel J. O'Donnell referred to it as "nearly naked, hot men rolling around." Charles Barron, who opposed the bill, referenced American slavery and brain trauma. Some advocates of the bill outlined the economic impact of legalizing MMA as well as its potential virtues.

Some expressed a personal lack of interest in MMA but pledged support of it nonetheless. Assemblyman Michael Benedetto referred to it as a "nasty" sport but still voted in favor of ending the ban.

The result ends a long battle by the the sport's leading promotion, UFC, to legalize MMA in New York. The state Senate had passed a similar bill in each of the past seven years, but this was the first time it made it to the Assembly floor.

"This has been a long time coming," UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta said in a statement.
The UFC has repeatedly stated it intends to host multiple events per year in several locations in New York and could land in Madison Square Garden before the end of the year.

The bill still requires the signature of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, which should be a formality. Cuomo already expressed his support for the sport this year by including professional MMA revenue in his proposed budget.

"While there are still additional steps that have to occur before professional MMA becomes a reality in New York, I want to assure our fans that if Governor Cuomo signs the bill into law and the State Athletic Commission puts in place the appropriate regulations, we look forward to hosting our first New York event in the world's most famous arena -- Madison Square Garden," Fertitta said. "We also look forward to scheduling events in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Utica, Albany, and Brooklyn. We are excited."

MMA will fall under the jurisdiction of the New York State Athletic Commission. The NYSAC has 120 days to adopt the necessary statutes to regulate the sport.

An often overlooked aspect of the bill is that it also regulates MMA on an amateur level. Under previous law, New York state officials did not oversee amateur MMA, which meant there were no safety guidelines, such as pre-fight physical examinations or ambulances and physicians on site.

The UFC turned to a number of measures in its effort to host a live event in New York. The promotion filed suit against the state in 2011, essentially challenging the validity of the Combative Sports Law of 1997 on the grounds it infringed on First Amendment rights and was unconstitutionally vague. Until Tuesday, New York was the only state in the U.S. where professional MMA was banned.

Another lawsuit was filed last September. The UFC also filed for a preliminary injunction that would have allowed a live UFC 198 event to take place April 23 at Madison Square Garden. That injunction was ultimately denied.

MMA in New York received an unexpected boost in February 2015, when former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, who was publicly against MMA, was indicted on fraud charges and replaced by a former sponsor of the bill, Carl E. Heastie.

There are several prominent New York natives on the UFC roster, including former champions Jon Jones and Chris Weidman. Before the ban in 1997, the UFC held one live event in September 1995 in Buffalo, New York.

Of course, the bill paves the way for all professional MMA promoters to host live events in New York. Bellator MMA president Scott Coker also expressed his desire to promote an event there.

"The New York Assembly's vote to legalize MMA is a watershed moment for this incredible sport," Coker said. "As someone who has been promoting combat sports for more than 30 years, this is a very exciting time for MMA. We at Bellator MMA are very much looking forward to hosting an event in the 'Crown Jewel of America,' New York. Two Bellator champions, Liam McGeary andMarcos Galvao, call New York home and it means a great deal to the both of them.

"We've already been in contact with the great people at the Barclays Center and several other incredible venues and we can't wait to bring our world class athletes and action packed shows to an arena in the Empire State soon."

Tony Ferguson Withdraws from UFC on Fox 19 Headliner vs. Nurmagomedov Due to Injury

Top lightweight contender Tony Ferguson has suffered an injury and has withdrawn from his UFC on Fox 19 headlining bout against Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Promotion officials confirmed the news following an initial report from Fox Sports. As a result of Ferguson’s injury, the light heavyweight contest between Rashad Evans and Glover Teixeira will serve as the card’s new main event. The promotion is currently attempting to find an opponent to face Nurmagomedov on short notice.

“Doc said it wasn’t wise to fight due to any more trauma could be terminal,” Ferguson wrote on Instagram. “...I will be back, I will be better. You haven’t seen anything yet.

“Give me a couple weeks. Khabib pulled out three times. I have pulled out once in my whole career. I will be back. It’s s----y these things happen...Staying positive for my family.”

UFC on Fox 19 takes place at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla., on April 16 and also includes a showdown between Lyoto Machida and Dan Henderson. The evening’s main card will be televised on the Fox Network.

Ferguson has won his last seven fights in the Octagon, including a second-round submission of Edson Barboza at “The Ultimate Fighter 22” finale in December. Nurmagomedov, who is unbeaten in 22 professional outings, hasn’t competed since besting current 155-pound king Rafael dos Anjos in April 2014.

Lyoto Machida Admits to Use of Banned Substance; Henderson Fight Scratched from UFC on Fox 19

The middleweight co-main event of UFC on Fox 19 between Lyoto Machida and Dan Henderson has been removed from Saturday’s card after Machida admitted to using a banned substance.

The former light heavyweight champion admitted to the violation during an out-of-competition sample collection by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) last week, according to a statement released by the UFC on Friday. The substance Machida admitted to using is currently unknown.

“Machida stated that he was unaware that the substance was prohibited both in and out of competition and, in accordance with the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, his disclosure of usage will be taken into consideration by USADA during any potential results management and adjudication process,” the statement read.

As a result, a featherweight clash between Cub Swanson and Hacran Dias has been moved to the Fox-televised main card. Henderson will be scheduled for a new bout in the “near future,” according to the statement.

Machida has lost three of his last four Octagon appearances, including a third-round technical knockout defeat to Yoel Romero at UFC Fight Night in Hollywood, Fla., this past June. He previously defeated Dan Henderson via split decision at UFC 157 in February 2013.

UFC on Fox 19 takes place at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla., and is headlined by a light heavyweight bout between Glover Teixeira and Rashad Evans. The evening’s main card airs on Fox beginning at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier 2 set as the new main event for UFC 200
030416-5-SOCCER-Cormier-Jones-OB-PI.vadapt.664.high.94.jpg

The new main event for UFC 200 is officially set as light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will meet interim champ Jon Jones on July 9 as part of the historic card taking place at the new T-Mobile Arena in La Vegas.
UFC officials announced the new fight on "Good Morning America" on Wednesday.
The new headline bout comes almost exactly one week after Conor McGregor was pulled from UFC 200 after he refused to travel to the United States for promotional engagements to begin planning for his fight against Nate Diaz.
The UFC decided there was no other option than to yank McGregor from the card and cancel his main even status for the event.
Following Jones' victory over Ovince Saint Preux at UFC 197 last weekend, it was clear that he was the front runner to land the headline spot for his rematch with Cormier with the light heavyweight title up for grabs.
The two rivals were supposed to meet at UFC 197 but Cormier suffered a shin injury that forced him out of the fight.
Now the long awaited rematch is set for July 9 following Cormier's recovery from the leg injury as well as Jones walking away unscathed from his last fight against Saint Preux.
Jones and Cormier may be involved in one of the most heated rivalries in the history of the sport.
Jones beat Cormier by unanimous decision the last time they met in January 2015, but a lot has changed since that fight took place.
Jones had to sit out for almost 16 months due to a hit-and-run accident last year that nearly put an end to his career. Meanwhile, Cormier went onto win the title vacated by Jones in his absence before defending the belt against Alexander Gustafsson this past October.
Jones and Cormier have been champing at the bit to fight each other and now they will get the chance as part of one of the biggest cards of the year at UFC 200.
Jones vs. Cormier 2 becomes the third title fight taking place at UFC 200 in addition to Miesha Tate facing Amanda Nunes as well as Jose Aldo against Frankie Edgar for the interim featherweight title.
Cormier on Jones: 'If this is the new Jon Jones, there's no way that guy can beat me'

Brock Lesnar to return at UFC 200; opponent to be announced

Brock Lesnar is returning to the UFC Octagon.

UFC officials announced that the professional wrestling superstar and former UFC heavyweight champion will face an undisclosed opponent at UFC 200 on July 9. The news comes despite an announcement by Lesnar in March 2015 that he was "closing the door on MMA."

The WWE said Saturday night that Lesnar was "granted a one-off opportunity" to return to the UFC for the July fight and that he'd return for WWE's SummerSlam on Aug. 21.

Frank Mir and lost via submission.

Lesnar went on to win his next four bouts, including a November 2008 UFC title fight against Randy Couture. Lesnar avenged the Mir loss at a landmark UFC 100 event on July 11, 2009, in Las Vegas. After that bout, Lesnar was sidelined for a year because of diverticulitis, an intestinal disorder.

He went on to compete two more times, suffering knockout losses to Cain Velasquez and Alistair Overeem, the latter in December 2011. Lesnar trained for a comeback last year and was in negotiations with the UFC on a new deal, but ultimately decided to re-sign with WWE.

Reporter says he was removed from UFC 199, 'banned for life' after reporting Brock Lesnar story

INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- A reporter's credentials were revoked during a UFC show Saturday night after he reported that WWE star and former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar was close to fighting again for the organization.

MMAfighting.com's Ariel Helwani said on Twitter that he was escorted out of the UFC 199 show at the Forum before the main event, along with photographer Esther Lin and video director E. Casey Leydon.

Helwani's story on Lesnar appeared a few hours before the surprising return was made official. During the UFC 199 show, the UFC announced that Lesnar, mixed martial arts' biggest pay-per-view star, will fight at UFC 200 in Las Vegas next month.

Helwani posted that he only reported news, didn't do anything unethical and then was "told we're banned for life."

I love this sport & this job with all my heart. Did nothing unethical. I reported fight news. That's it. & then told we're banned for life.

UFC spokesman Dave Sholler said the promotion believes that journalists should show professional courtesy by contacting the UFC for comment before reporting a story.

Helwani was recently removed from his role as a reporter for Fox Sports, the UFC's corporate broadcast partner. He is among the most prominent journalists covering the sport, with more than 368,000 Twitter followers.

UFC President Dana White hasn't publicly commented on the decision to ban Helwani. White didn't attend the post-fight news conference at UFC 199.

Official statement: UFC lifts ban on Ariel Helwani, MMAFighting.com
Two days after the UFC removed MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani, E. Casey Leydon, and Esther Lin just prior to the UFC 199 main event in Inglewood, California, the promotion has lifted what Helwani said was a lifetime ban from attending events as a credentialed media member. The UFC released the following statement on Monday evening.

"Following a conversation with the editorial team at SB Nation, UFC will not prevent MMAFighting.com from receiving media credentials to cover live UFC events. We respect the role the media plays in our sport and beyond, including MMAFighting's ability to report news. However, in our opinion, we believe the recurring tactics used by its lead reporter extended beyond the purpose of journalism. We feel confident our position has now been adequately communicated to the SB Nation editorial team.

UFC's goal as the world's leading mixed martial arts promotion is to cultivate interest in its world-class athletes and events, and deliver for the fans. We will continue to introduce this sport and its athletes to new fans across the world, and we will do so by working alongside media across all platforms."

This news follows Dana White's assertion to TMZ that Helwani would not be permitted to cover UFC events on-site for as long as he was president. The ban apparently stemmed from Helwani reporting the return of Brock Lesnar on UFC 200, which was published before the UFC's own planned announcement during last Saturday's pay-per-view. Heavy backlash ensued against the UFC by multiple mainstream media outlets for the promotion's actions.

Brock Lesnar vs. Mark Hunt set for UFC 200 co-main event
We already knew on Saturday night that Brock Lesnar (5-3) was coming back to the UFC after a five-year absence, but the opponent wouldn't be revealed until Monday. Well today is Monday, and we know who the former heavyweight champion and current WWE star will be facing in the UFC 200 co-main event. In an interview with SportsCenter's Hannah Storm, Lesnar confirmed that he will fight none other than Mark Hunt.

Hunt (12-10-1) is coming off a walkoff KO win over Lesnar rival Frank Mir in the main event of UFC Brisbane in March. The Super Samoan also knocked out Antonio Silva at UFC 193, successfully taking the rematch of their epic first encounter in December 2013, which ended in a draw.

Lesnar has not fought since he announced his retirement on the night of December 30th, 2011, when Alistair Overeem scored a 1st round TKO in the main event of UFC 141. Since then, Lesnar has re-signed with the WWE and is still under contract with them, so this is a one-off return for one of MMA's most polarizing figures, and he has a tough matchup ahead of him next month.

UFC 200 is headlined by a light heavyweight championship unification bout betweenDaniel Cormier and Jon Jones. The other two title fights are Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar rematching for the interim featherweight belt, as well as Miesha Tate's first defense of her women's bantamweight crown against Brazil's Amanda Nunes. UFC 200 takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, July 9th.

Reports: UFC receives two bids topping $4 billion to purchase company

UFC may be changing hands after all. Despite president Dana White denying reports of a sale, two groups have reportedly posted bids in the $4.1 billion range to purchase the entire organization, according to ESPN andFloCombat.com.

WME-IMG, in conjunction with Dalian Wanda Group, and China Media Capital are both competing for the purchase and still trying to completely finance their offers. One of the investors for WME-IMG, according to Darren Rovell, is the Kraft Group, which is being asked to chip in $25-50 million along with the rest of the investors.

Majority owners Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta purchased their 80 percent stake in the company for $2 million in 2001. Last month, White said the company is "not for sale."

"The UFC is not for sale, but we are working on a deal. There are confidentiality deals involved," White said on The Dan Patrick Show. "We're working on expanding. We're working on growing the company and moving into other territories like China and Japan (and) Korea. So yeah, we're always working on deals."

According to reports, a UFC sale would for the entire company, meaning shares owned by the the Fertitta brothers and White would be included.
