Khabib Nurmagomedov is out of UFC 209’s co-main event after falling ill just before weigh-ins on Thursday evening, UFC announced.

He was treated and discharged, but doctors advised Nurmagomedov not to fight in his condition, according to a release.

Nurmagomedov (24-0) was set to face Tony Ferguson (21-3) for the interim lightweight title and the right to face Conor McGregor later on this year. Now, there will be no interim champion as UFC has canceled the fight.

Nurmagomedov was set to fight Ferguson on Saturday, the third time the two had been scheduled to fight. Unfortunately, each time they have been paired, the fight has been called off. Nurmagomedov was forced to pull out of the first meeting with an injury while Ferguson was forced to pull out of the second bout with a lung injury.

Nurmagomedov was on a roll after returning for a two-year layoff, earning back-to-back stoppages against Darrell Horcher in April and Michael Johnson in November.

UFC is still looking to add a fifth fight to its main card.

Kelvin Gastelum flagged by USADA for marijuana, pulled from Anderson Silva fight

Kelvin Gastelum has been pulled from his UFC 212 fight against Anderson Silvaafter potentially testing positive for marijuana metabolites in an in-competition drug test conducted by USADA, the UFC announced Thursday.

Gastelum, 25, was flagged for a potential anti-doping violation stemming from an in-competition drug test collected in conjunction with his March 11 victory over Vitor Belfort at UFC Fight Night 106, according to a UFC statement. Gastelum was flagged for Carboxy-Tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as Carboxy-THC, “which is a metabolite of marijuana and/or hashish.”

The legal decision limit for Carboxy-THC in-competition is 180 ng/mL, per WADA standards.

Gastelum (14-2) defeated Belfort via first-round TKO at UFC Fight Night 106 to propel himself into the top-10 of the UFC middleweight rankings.

As a result of the announcement, Gastelum has been placed on provisional suspension and forced to withdraw from his June 3 contest against Silva. Representatives from Silva’s team informed MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani that the former UFC middleweight champion still wishes to remain on the card, however no new opponent has been found at the time of this writing.

A former winner of The Ultimate Fighter 17, Gastelum racked up a 6-2 UFC record as a top welterweight prospect before moving up to the middleweight division in late-2016 due to his continued struggles cutting down to the 170-pound limit. Gastelum has since won back-to-back fights in dominant fashion at 185 pounds, stopping both Tim Kennedy and Belfort inside the distance.

The UFC’s statement can be read below.

The UFC organization was notified today that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) informed Kelvin Gastelum of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation involving Carboxy-Tetrahydrocannabinol (“Carboxy-THC”) which is a metabolite of marijuana and/or hashish, above the decision limit of 180 ng/mL, stemming from an in-competition sample collected in conjunction with his recent bout in Fortaleza, Brazil on March 11, 2017.

USADA, the independent administrator of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, will handle the results management and appropriate adjudication of this case involving Gastelum, as it relates to the UFC Anti-Doping Policy and future UFC participation. Because the Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission (CABMMA) was the regulatory body overseeing the fight in Fortaleza and has licensing jurisdiction over Gastelum, USADA will work to ensure that the Commission has the necessary information to determine its proper judgment of Gastelum’s potential anti-doping violation. Additional information will be provided at the appropriate time as the process moves forward.

As a result of the potential anti-doping violation against Gastelum, USADA has placed him under a provisional suspension. While the UFC Anti-Doping Policy affords Gastelum full and fair due process rights before any possible adjudication of his case, because of the proximity to Gastelum’s scheduled June 3rd bout against Anderson Silva, Gastelum is being removed from the card and a replacement is currently being sought.

They were looking like lightening... especially compared to Glover..
All that running was weird though. But I guess there's no need to stand and get hit... But! He (Gus) should work on angles/footwork

Yeah - the running and resetting is over the top at times. He's been doing it more of late ... I guess it's because he's trying to take less damage compared to years past. The 5-round title fights with Jones & DC respectively, etc. Getting KO'd by Anthony Johnson in 2 - 3 minutes, etc.

WHAT IF OLYMPIC BOXING CHAMP CLARESSA SHIELDS WENT TO THE UFC?
What if Claressa Shields, the only U.S. boxer to ever win consecutive Olympic Gold Medals went to the UFC? She is without question the most famous female boxer and has no peers in her 165 pound, middleweight class. That she even returned to the Games of Rio after standing on the top podium in London four years ago exemplifies the overall demand for women in professional boxing. There are pros, but even ardent observers of the sweet science are hard pressed to roll off the tongue the female fighters on the current scene. Next to Shields, Laila Ali, who retired undefeated nine years back, is the other name that comes to mind instantly.

Shields has the option of remaining amateur adding to the two world championships she already holds in addition to those matching Olympic Golds, and focusing on three in a row in 2020. Perhaps there would be enough endorsement deals along the way to sustain her financially and that might even be comparable to a pro contract. That is the conundrum of being the best in your sport but one that is virtually unnoticed in the sense of relating to a well paying future. Olympic medalist Shakur Stevenson and Nico Hernandez and quarterfinalist Gary Russell and Carlos Balderas will be signing on the dotted line to get paid for their pugilist services and likely before there is an offer worthy of Shields’ attention.

It might not be a bias against female fighters as much as the lack of cultivating a brand for women in boxing as the UFC has done, even partnering with the ground breaking all-female fighting organization Invicta to cultivate rising stars. The UFC has made it a fighter is a fighter and even a headliner if they merit the interest of the fans.

One former Olympic bronze medalist in judo has become as famous as any combative sport participant, male or female, cage or ring. Ronda Rousey brought not only talent, but charisma and then some, plus that uncanny ability to seize a moment and a microphone when necessary.

Sara McMann, an Olympic silver medalist in wrestling, also found a niche in the UFC. It would be unfair to compare their careers except that neither of them would’ve made the cash as a pro in their speciality that they have in MMA. While it might seem absurd to talk about pro judo or pro (the non scripted) wrestling, unfortunately for female boxers they haven’t advanced much further.

Which comes back to the What If Shields went to the UFC? The 21 year old hasn’t hit her prime even with those bookend golds. The league wants the best and she is that. The weight is a factor but maybe not, the new catchweight class emerges around 150-155. The marketing job just got easier. A boxing champ, Holly Holm, has had her moment and a belt, proving there is the possibility of transitioning. Cris Cyborg seems like the perfect matchup, or start her out with Holm. Too much standup for an MMA match? Anyone watch McGregor-Diaz II ?

Which brings us back to What Likely Will Happen with Shields? She could stay amateur with enough sponsorships and again, that might be as lucrative as a pro boxing contract in the near future. And the chance for a third gold is a motivator of which no US boxer has ever related. Plus Shields has never hinted she wanted to try MMA.

Leaving the squared circle for the octagon is a long shot at best, but a great dream.
